Tigers @ Yankees: Tigers about to throw back-to-back-to-back Cy Young winners
Should be a really fun matchup tonight between Scherzer and McCarthy. McCarthy has looked unstoppable the last couple months and Max has been stout as well. I say this now and at the end of the sixth the Yankees will be up 2-0 and we will have had only four hits.
Overall, I really see this as a pretty critical series. We've struggled in this second half so far and really would be nice to keep that momentum we had against the Rockies going. Gotta figure out how to hit these top notch pitchers as well by the time the playoffs roll around or be ready for more pitching battles which I'm not sure we can afford given the state of our bullpen.
Oh... and I can't wait to watch Price.
What do the lottery numbers look like tomorrow?
Price is going tomorrow.
David Price---not Jimbo!
Max just made quick work of Jeter. Max seems to be pitching with a bit more tempo than I remember from him in the past.
Probably just some early adrenaline pitching in New York. Scherzer works at a decent pace usually, you won't mistake him for Fister or Buehrle with his pace but he's certainly never been slow between pitches.
watching the yankee broadcast - they just said max took out an insurance policy incase he gets injured. pays him 144 million if he gets injured. im sure the premium is big (5 mil maybe?), but makes his decision look realy sauve. only way he loses is if his new contracts < 144,000,000 + insurance policy or he gets injured and he's out the premium.
trivia question: when was the last time a team started three consecutive cy youngs?
ugh. i've read alot and not seen a braves mentioned. figured it must have gone back further. lame trivia.
maddux, smoltz and glavine all won the cy young but not in consecutive years. i'm pretty sure the tigers are the first with 3 different consecutive cy young winners - and they will pitch back-to-back-to-back in new york this series.
Speaking of the Tigers, Avila drives me insane. Ugh.
Avila is so bad with the stick. Yikes...
about Avila is that, despite having what looks like a nice compact swing, he swings and misses so much. For every one time I cheer him when he hits it the opposite way or up the middle (and shows what he's perfectly capable of doing consistantly), I scream at him 10 times for his recurring "bad approach" of trying to pull pitches. Methinks he guesses too much on opposing pitchers and what they're going to throw him.
Totally agree, his swing looks so natural it continues to amaze me how much he swings and misses.
He just seems to swing through every fastball nowadays that maybe he just doesn't pick it up well out of the glove?
Although that doesn't make any sense because he's the catcher, his job is to see the ball well out of the glove. Total head scratcher.
That was disappointing.
Bah make contact!
Last time was the Giants 2009
R. Johnson, Zito, Lincecum
by Carrera in CF---under review, though---saves a couple runs for Max!
So what's the time limit for Girardi to stand out there talking to the ump before he has to make a decision to challenge or not?
at 2nd by Ian to shut down that rally!
The Tigers' defense is so much better this year, really makes a huge difference when balls don't drop for hits. Without that great glovework in that inning, the score would now be at least 5-0 Yanks with still just 1 out
Now Suarez is out of the game. With Romine coming in, we're essentially down to a 7-man lineup with two boat anchors at the bottom.
here we come!
Disagree with this statement
Avila stranding 2 more runners...
Really wish we didn't rest so many players at a time. I'd rather rest Davis today and Castellanos tomorrow instead of both at once. It really hurts the lineup especially since Suarez is now out.
Yeah we have the last three A.L. Cy Young winners, but are they currently pitching at Cy Young caliber?
Serious question...How is Avila still the everyday catcher?
to catching than just being able to swing a bat.
It's getting on base that eludes him. All seriousness, is he much worse at hitting than average ML catchers? I honestly don't know.
God, I hope Suarez is good to go. The possibility of seeing Romine for extended action doesn't inspire confidence. The bottom of the batting order is lacking enough. Sometimes this batting lineup gets shut down by average pitchers.
