no actually whatever those numbers are called that measure a defensive players range and outs they produce, he is one of the worst in baseball. he has been on a sharp decline. he doesn't come in well at all on balls because he's afraid to dive and he doesn't go back on balls well either. doesn't make for a good cf....

So the Tigers parlayed Curtis Granderson (and Edwin Jackson/Ian Kennedy)  into Scherzer (and Coke) and Price.

Sounds good to me.  Thanks Curtis!

the game was on so I turn on the radio. Silence. I turn up the volume and still silence, I look at the station wondering if I changed it by accident when the announcers begin talking, "Looks like Davis is going out to center field, I think Austin Jackson just got traded"

Wow.

The trade is a really good one.  The Tigers got one of the best starting pitchers in all of baseball for a solid major league centerfielder and a #5 starter.  However, I am not ecstatic about it.  The Tigers have been eliminated from the playoffs the last couple years because of weak bats and bullpen meltdowns, not starting pitching.  That being said, the trade is a good one and makes the team better.  But it does nothing to alleviate the problems most likely to end the season sooner than we would like.

and the A's and Angels have pretty good bullpens and we still don't. I agree that it was a good trade and I also agree that the Tigers haven't fixed their main issues. The Tigers need more consistent offense and a reliable bullpen. They addressed the pen with the Soria deal but he has been awful in 3 appearances and they needed more than 1 guy. It will be interesting to see which starter goes to the pen in the post-season and how much he is relied upon.

I'd have liked to see some bullpen help, but the offensive woes were going to still be there with Jackson playing.  And honestly, this gives the opportunity to put a guy like Porcello or Verlander in the bullpen come the postseason, which is huge for this team.

Some very mixed emotions, but I understand it's a business decision to hopefully improve the team. I really wanted all the main core guys to stay and be rewarded with a World Series championship. The ones who have been here for the struggle. I was hoping we could just keeping dumping unproven prospects.

I like this deal a lot. I am no expert or analysis, but this deal makes sense for two major reasons... 1) Many believe Max will not be back with the Tigers next year, and if true, Price can fill his void well. 2) It was thought that Smyly would be the one starter that would be moved to the bullpen to strengthen it during the playoffs. Now,Verlander will probably be the guy who gets moved to the pen. I believe the bullpen would be stronger with Verlander there than Smyly, and Price would be a better number two guy in the playoffs over Verlander.

Jackson is a good player to have - he's better than your average CF at the plate and in the field, although I don't think he's getting more than incrementally better from here.

Losing Smyly hurts, but not nearly as much as getting Price helps.  The Tigers will be better served during their World Series window with Price than with Smyly and that's gotta be the overriding concern.

That piper is going to present quite the bill in two years, though.

I can't believe I'll agree with Valenti, but he was spot on:

Anyone who thinks this is anything but a major coup is an idiot.  It's DAVID PRICE people.  DAVID PRICE.  Do you not understand how much better he is than not just Drew Smyly, but perhaps ANYONE on our pitching roster.

Total steal.  We now have 4 SP that we can expect to go 7 deep in every playoff game.

Adding Price helps the bullpen more than Smyly moving to the bullpen does (less innings for the BP and now can send Porcello or Verlander there and still have 4 "aces" in the playoff rotation).

have an outfield consisting of Martinez, Hunter and Davis.

Thats a really bad defensive outfield.

The pitchers will have huge burden on them come play-off time. On paper it would seem they would be up to the task.

We shall see i guess.

Jackson's loss defensively will be felt, but this team is full of strikeout pitchers and I still think Davis and Hunter can play competent defense.  Jackson wasn't making that outfield amazing either; I rather have David Price and accept a drop defensively.

think that might be a good idea to move JV to the pen for the play-offs.

But i would assume he would not be too thrilled with it and would likely veto the idea.

Anytime you can pick up David price for what we gave up, you have to be thrilled. Makes their starting pitching better now and next year. Now, those who are predicting verlander to the pen, don't know verlander very well, there's no way that is happening. I think DD will nab another bullpen arm in August and maybe another defensive outfielder type. Like I said, you don't turn away David price because you can't let go of Austin Jackson or Drew smyly. They made out better than Oakland because the A's gave up a damn good hitter for a good pitcher not as good as David price.

I gotta admit I wasn't the biggest Jackson fan the last year or so but was happy to see him put together a solid last few weeks back on top of the lineup. As far as Smyly goes. He could be a very solid starter someday. But I don't think he will ever be on the level or near David Price. Plus if and when Max leaves next year, you will still have Price for another year. That's huge, and I'm sure DD will do what he can to lock him up for awhile. I love the trade... The only thing I wonder now is who goes to the pen come playoff time? JV or a possible 18 + game winner Porcello?

Great pickup.  Jackson is a competent center fielder but isn't probably going to become an offensive standout (he's had fine seasons, but as a guy who has watched him on fantasy teams for years I'm not expecting some amazing turnaround).  Smyly and Adames are young guys who could be blossom, but when you can get one of the best 5-6 pitchers in the league for another year and half, you have to make that pick-up.

As a Mariner fan, Jackson automatically becomes our best OF option. And all we did was give up Nick Franklin, a guy that had no future with the team since Cano signed.

Great trades for both Ms and Tigers. Not really sure what TB was thinking though. They couldve had Addison Russell from Oakland before they shipped him to Chicago.
