Austin and Smyly are gone. Austin to Seattle. Drew to TB.

At least that's what. Dan and Jim are saying on the radio.

Whaaat?  Smyly is the one I don't like.  I liked Austin a lot and the only reason I liked the trade was because it might allow them to push Smyly back into the bullpen.  They don't need more starting pitching.  They need a bullpen.  And some Bull Durham kinda magic for Verlander.

Agree 100% on Jackson - this is the age he should be blossoming.  Instead he is stagnating.  Smyly looks like he is going to be very good - like a 2nd/3rd in the rotation guy down the road.  He has a 4ish ERA in his first year as a regular starter - those type of guys generally put it together in a few years (see Porcello) and he was a leftie.  That leaves the bullpen without the lefty guy you take out of the starting rotation and into the bullpen.

Porcello has been maybe the 3rd best pitcher this year, hard to see him go to the bullpen.  I cannot imagine JV going to the bullpen ... he has pitched the worse of the bunch and you can't really trust him can you with 1 out and 2 on to get someone out in the 7th in the playoffs?

I was more than ok with giving up the 2 prospects in the last trade, and Jackson wouldnt get you much alone but man Smyly I think is really going to be a good one.

A's made a crazy trade too.

Really weird watching the game.

They announce that the Tigers aquired Price. Then Ausmus comes on the field and I say, "uh oh, wonder if someone got traded and Brad has to take him out." I was half joking. Then Jackson leaves to a standing ovation and hugs everyone in the dugout. Pretty surreal.

So long, Austin.

Well Max is gone, so this trade is for next season as well, with a rotation of Verlander, Price, Sanchez, Porcello, ?

I think Price is a year younger than Max so he is not going to be a cheap signing.  This protects you for an extra year though as Price is signed thru 2015.  So it gives a rotation of Price, Verlander, Sanchez, Porcello and AAA prospect in 2015.  So I understand it from that perspective as a replacement for Max, but it's for 1 year.  Porcello is going to get paid too soon.

Is Price's contract up at the end of this season, out of curiosity? I believe that he had one year of arbitration left and stood to make $20 million-ish next year potentially. Either way, I do like the trade because it reinforces the starting rotation, but like others, I actually did like Austin and Smyly and what they contributed to this team.

I don't think I've ever seen a player get pulled in mid-game because of a trade though - has that ever happened? I seemed to always believe they were usually simply told later on and allowed to complete the game they were in. I could obviously be wrong in that belief, of course.

It happened to Ubaldo a few years ago, I think he was pulled in like the 2nd inning of a game that he started. It was a surreal and pretty sad sight to see Jackson pulled mid inning like that though, I understand not wanting the person you traded for to not get injured and such but damn that was almost heartwrenching to watch.

This is awesome even though I will miss Jackson despite him never fully coming around offensively. This is still a huge win. Obviously, Ausmus is going to have to get a consistent center fielder, but a rotation of Scherzer, Price, Verlander, Sanchez is really as good as it gets when October rolls around.

Going to be an interesting test of our manager.  Say Verlander remains the slumping 4.3 ERA type of pitcher.  Is there value putting him in the bullpen?  Do you trust Verlander to come in the 7th and gettings 2 outs with 2 men on for example?  It's a strange situation for your once ace.  Porcello has been at times the 2nd best pitcher on the staff and overall 3rd at worse.

It would be an ego hit to Verlander, but certainly not unprecedented.  Tim Lincecum's career is almost a perfect parallel to JV, and the Giants used him out of the BP in the playoffs after he started to regress.
