Way late to the party, but I had other things going on - nonetheless, here is your obligatory thread for the games that are going on in NCAA Division I football this evening.

- On ESPN, Louisville is leading Rutgers 17-7 just short of the half

- At 9 PM, San Diego State will be playing Air Force on CBS Sports Network.

- At 10:30 PM, for the night owls, Arizona vs. USC on Fox Sports 1.

Look at how deep the AAC is - they have teams that can beat SEC teams (Florida, Arkansas) and hang around with the number 8 team in the country. It looks like Louisville would absolutely crush Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio, and Wisconsin on a neutral site. Rutgers would probably smash everyone besides maybe Ohio they're that good - Gary Nova is the real deal. Yet another demonstration that shelling out the extra money to get the top coaches like Strong and Flood definitely pays off.

Gary Nova is not the real deal, most Rutgers fans don't even like him since he tends to throw a lot of picks. I don't think Rutgers would beat Wisconsin, Northwestern, or Michigan. They aren't that good, they got lit up offensively by Fresno St. and SMU last week. Unless this was a joke, then carry on.

Right, but Rutgers beat Arkansas and ceding a couple yards to Fresno State isn't that bad because they are quite good. Like I said, Rutgers probably would be one of the top teams in the Big 10 - you can clearly see that from watching this game. They pass the eye-test with flying colors compared to the amateur hour that is Big 10 football.

By the way, regarding their defense against SMU... It's like when Kentucky and South Carolina play, and South Carolina narrowly wins, it's not because South Carolina is bad.. It's because Kentucky is just that good. Similarly, SMU must just be that good.

Top-to-bottom, the AAC has some really good teams that will be sure to test Louisville like Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF.

I've watched all their games this year, they're alright. The difference between UK and USC is that, Rutgers choked a lead and let SMU score 21 straight points in the fourth quarter and had about 50 something points put on them after 3 overtimes. Cincy got destroyed by Illiniois and lost last week to a poor USF team so they're ok to bad. UCF and Lousiville are good for sure, I think Rutgers is slightly above average, there's no way they could beat every team in the Big Ten besides Ohio State. That's what I strongly disagree with.

Ok well, I was kidding. I was just being snarky to posts that other people generally put that cite completely subjective (eye test) or dubious (transitive property) methodology as well as the wrong idea that every team in the SEC is invincible.

UCF, Rutgers, and Louisville. And UCF and Rutgers are middling at best. S. Carolina and Arkansas are not great teams either.

Lane Kiffin is going to be on College Game Day Saturday. Yeah, great. Can't wait to hear if he ever got his briefcase back that was on the bus.

I would like to watch the Arizona/USC game, but I'm not staying awake that late on a work night. Hopefully freaking Rutgers can make this a game. I figured Louisville would be winning by 20+ at the half, but I was wrong.

The Louisville-Rutgers announcers were just talking about the Sagarin strength of schedule rankings. I just pulled them up and Sagarin has MSU's SOS ranked 16 spots higher than us. Can someone who understands his methodology explain to me how that's possible considering that the biggest differences in our schedules is that we play OSU and PSU while State plays Purdue and an FCS school? Seems counter-intuitive. Is his methodology just pure shit?

  • Notre Dame - Notre Dame
  • Iowa (45) - Minnesota (83)
  • Youngstown State (100) - Connecticut (111)
  • South Florida (123) - Central Michigan (147)
  • Western Michigan (181) - Akron (148)

Sagarin thinks that FCS team was better than any of the other five weak opponents. Massey agrees. And we had a pretty convincing demonstration that Iowa's better than Minnesota.

I will say this about Bridgewater - he's very good when he's on.  But I do think people have overstated how good he really is; he's played a couple of competent defenses over the years and looked okay, but I'm not sold he'll be some great NFL QB.  Plus, given the competition of the AAC you really have no idea how he'd handle even a competent series of opponents.

Was tempted to roll Lou -19 but backed away.  Was actually concerned about a backdoor cover byRutgers but Lou is having difficulty closing the front door. That's just a big number to deal with.

Yardage differential is currently 400 -200 but two missed FGs will tick you right off. So will Three turnovers.

I'm on SDSU - 4. They're behind at the half but should be OK. Still plenty of clock left.

1) FS1 announcing duo is awful.

2) what is it with these historic programs playing Thursday night games? First it was Texas and now USC. I hope Michigan is above that.

RR's office is just incredibly predictable and, in a way, one-dimensional. It might have been novel eight years ago. But time has passed him by, and he's been unwilling to adapt. Shades of making Steve Threet play read-option.

Precisely.  That off-white paint, the beige shag carpeting, a desk right in the center of the room. Where is the creativity?  For Christ's sake at least throw up a framed poster or two.

He only managed to win the Big East championship--and the BCS slot that went with it--after Miami (YTM), VaTech, and BC left the conference for the ACC. His WVU teams were firmly entrenched behind all three before then. I actualy went to WVU's game against BC in Morgantown the year before the Big 3 left for greener pastures. BC curb-stomped WVU with a Big Ten approach--pro-style, run-heavy offense, big rugged defense. I had no Michigan affiliation when he was hired (I'm now a grad--my first year was RR's last) and had no dog in the hunt, but I thought that hire was a huge mistake at the time.
