So, here is the slate for tonight:
Iowa State vs. Texas - 7:30 PM on ESPN
Western Kentucky vs. LA-Monroe - 7:30 PM on ESPNU
For the two or three people who might want some Pac-12 action:
UCLA vs. Utah - 10 PM on Fox Sports 1
and saying Texas has already looked better. They lost by 20 to Ole Miss at home and beat a hapless KState team by 10.
However, it will be our luck that Gerg somehow makes them into a top 20 unit
Are you sure they weren't referring to the collective hair styles of the coaching staff?
"Better looking" not "looking better."
Pulling for the Cyclones (+9) anf the Hill Toppers (-7.5). Your prayers are appreciated.
I don't care that it's in Salt Lake City, that game is going to be a bludgeoning.
UCLA (-6) should work nicely.
A good friend of mine is a Utah alum so I've watched a few games with him. Utah is pretty decent and has a good QB (Travis Wilson). UCLA will likely win, but I don't think it'll be a blowout by any means. Plus it's in Salt Lake City so you've got the Thursday night upset factor going
Go Utes. The Utes are tough at home.
Also, go Cyclones...please drop 60 on GERG's D. Score however many points are necessary to generate an appearance from a stuffed beaver.
I turned on the TV and thought Iowa State was USC. Those uniforms are uncannily similar. Double stripe on the shoulder instead of single, and obviously no Trojan on the helmet, but other than that they're identical.
Good move on their part, like when Iowa changed their unis to look like the Steelers. Look like a winner, maybe you'll play like a winner.
Iowa State has about 40 yards of offense in their first drive, but almost as much as this in penalty yards so far. Two steps forward, two steps back, right?
I know it's terrible to say this, but Iowa State has some brutal cheerleaders.
None of those girls are on the Hostess committee, I'm guessing.
Sorry, I went there.
Perhaps they are...which may explain their recruiting. Either that, or it could be the fact that they are in Ames, Iowa.
Hostess? As in, twinkies, cupcakes, ho-ho's and pies? I love me some hostess.
Toppers aren't messing around. 14-0. Two possessions, 2 tds.
Toppers are apparently fooling around. ULM in the red zone after a 69 catch and run aided by 84 broken 'tackles'.
Looks like the GERGening is underway. Iowa State drove for a score on their last possession and has gone from their own 7 to 1st down at Texas' 12 yard-line on this one.
...or does the Texas D-line look like they are loafing when ISU gets to the second level? No backside pursuit. I know they're big, but also lazy or tired already.
He does look dashing in his Texas swag, though.
Texas needs a fuzzy animal
They need a stuffed beaver.
Here we go Cyclones. Capitalize on this feild position.
Great college game right now and of course, I'm watching my Cleveland Browns. I never thought I'd be cheering for a freaking Sparty.
EDIT: and of course, Hoyer gets injured.
that will stop Iowa State.
Gerg looks competent when running his own defense and not a 3-3-5
Not a good finaly minute of the half there for the 'Clones. Dropped pass probably cost them 4 pts then gave up a junk TD. Decent Half overall though.
Not a good final minute of the half there for the 'Clones. Dropped pass probably cost them 4 pts then gave up a junk TD. Decent Half overall though.
but you already did.
The one thing that is fairly evident so far - Aaron Wimberly is not getting the most mileage out of his carries, but he definitely is the rusher of choice for the Cyclones.
Don't forget about DII Harding at Southern Arkansas on CBS Sports Network! It is Harding's first ever time on National Television! My AP Chem teacher's son plays for Harding and was wearing his Harding Bison shirt today.
Longest pass play in Iowa State history. 97 yards for the TD. That awful angle the safety took looked familiar
The out of position safety made me start looking for Tony Gibson on the sidelines.
Longest pass play in Iowa State history. Nice
Now THAT looked like the GERG defense I remember. 97 yard TD on a 3rd and long.
'Clones are out playing the 'Horns. They got 3 points on a short FG after that fumble; then a Hail Mary TD at the end of half.
Doesn't get more scintilating than that for analysis.
Can't say it too often. That was GERGian safety play if anything was.
Now that is some Gerg defense. 97 yard td pass for ISU. He always finds a way to raise the bar for defensive ineptitude
Now that Iowa State increased their offensive yards by about 30% on one TD run, we see again the typical problem that you have within Greg Robinson defenses where you sell out against the nothing on an obvious something play and promptly get burned.
Iowa St. D needs to focus...uncalled PI just then on ISU.
Chuck it deep, watch them commit pass interference, profit
That hit by Davis was awful. Aiming for the knee of a player way outside the play, after the play was done is inexcusible. Should've been an ejection, considering (IMO) it was worse than any targeting ejection this season.
Thats a textbook example of "intent to injure". Much more so than any of the targetting penalties safeties have been racking up this year. They should've tossed him. What a dirty, goon play
For anyone who missed it:
And yet Mack Brown was going off on the official when he called a 15 yard penalty for that.
He better be suspended for the next game.
WEKY starting to pull away, 24 - 10 with 5 mins left in the third.
I have to give Gerg credit for one thing - that is a hell of a tan
I want to root against Gerg, but then I see that hair, and its like I'm under some spell.
There it is. Punch it in here boys.
No problem. GERG is the master of sudden change.
My lord. This is awful.
Gerrgggggggggggggg, people do not tackle with their shoulders. You have to use your arms
yeah baby! Now a stop by the D.
Is a stud.
To Texas next season. Book it.
I'm seriously hoping chip comes to the big ten. Would be good for the conference
I like it. But what school? Illinois? IU? Doubt he would take a middling job like that.
Wow, Texas's defense has GERG's fingerprints all over it. Luckily for Texas fans, they'll only have to deal with him until the end of this season. I'd be shocked if Mack Brown and Co. will have employment much longer after that.
In the Mack Brown coffin. Plays like that ISU TD are the sign of an uninspired defense.
Right Mack? Lol.
So he's resorted to holding a prayer circle...
He sure looks confident. (Trying to claw one's own eyes out is a sign of confidence, right?)
It seems like there has been a Shipley at Texas since James Brown was running around.
Omfg watching the Big 12 is asking for my eyes to be gouged out. What the hell have you done with my precious football??
Is there a single team outside of Oklahoma and maybe Baylor whose offensive power is not the product of terrible defensive competition? This is atrocious atrocious football. Ugh.
What are you talking about?
Yeah I know.. BIG TEHNNN and all.. right.
Statistically, the Big 10 is split into 6 elite-to-great defenses and 6 really bad defenses. (6 teams in the top-20ish MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn State, Ohio, and Michigan).
The Big 12, however, has 2 great defenses (Oklahoma and Baylor in the top 20) and 8 mediocre-to-bad-to-terrible defenses. As I stated in my post, Oklahoma and Baylor are definitely good teams. Everyone else is flawed and it will only get worse once they start playing each other.
ISU is going to score right here and its game over
UCLA punts on 4th and 3 from the Utah 35. Quick kick results in Utes ball at their own 8. Worked out ok but wonder it'd be better to try and maintain possession there.
And I would've applauded him as a tear ran down my cheek. One of my favorite things about him
Down by a FG late in the 4th, and you interfere with the returner on a punt fair-catch? Ouch.
Wemberly is straight TRUCKIN fools. Longhorns have been bad tacklers for a while. Sooners did the same thing to them last year.
Wasn't that hit something? Truck stick *engaged*
I miss the screen pass. When was the last time we had one?
any one of a ton of throwback plays. aka the vincent smith special.
GERG stabbing himself in the stomach is perfect representation of his M.O. with fanbases.
First & goal
In about another play or two, Iowa State will be not the first team to put up over 400 yards on Texas this year. My guess is that Brown's attitude towards his own position on the "hot seat" sounds like "Some like it hot but you can't tell how hot 'til you try...some like it hot so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry".
Go Iowa state!!
Gotta give credit where credit is due.
They should have gone for it.
Not sure what the public was thinking here laying 9 on Iowa State. Even when Ash was announced as out, -7 on a team on the ropes with a back up QB on the road? John Q must have thought that Mack could circle the wagons in the bye. Problem that big run deep....
naw man its not logical betting with college teams due to bias towards Texas. remember, the line isn't what the public thinks what will happen, but rather the way to split betting at 50-50, in order to make the most money. and if extra people bet on Texas, then that line works.
That;s exactly what I'm saying. Half the money was willing to lay 7 on Texas at kick off. Before the Ash injury was announced it was 9 (!) which is where I was fortunate enough to lock in at. I'm not dogging the bookies, I just dont understand what John Q was thinking.
root with your heart, not with your brain
Any one else rooting for Texas? Having Mack Brown around for another year might help us open up the Texas recruiting pipeline. I believe Stonum was the last elite recruit we've gotten out of Texas.
You say "entertaining game" I say televised snuff film.
I kind of hope they score so that Iowa State can go ob another scoring drive.
Burnt Orange take on this event:
They're Texas fergodsakes!
I should know this but can some explain what the actual Review Rules are in college football.
That sure looks like a fumble, but then again forward momentum and all.
This has been a rough year for the officials.
This is Iowa State ball.
I feel like this won't end well for ISU
They've takent a lot of justified penalties but I think this fumble should go to ISU. Whistle seemed to come after the fumble and if the Texas RB had fallen forward you know he'd have gotten the TD, so why shouldn't ISU get the fumble?
Mack got bailed out man. Down by contact? Strip happened way before the whistle.
Holy hell that's an awful call.
Ouch. That was a fumble.
On what grounds is that not a fumble?
Lol, does GERG coach special teams too?
EDIT: Nm, just realized I'm 30 minutes behind the rest of you.
Hold on, did he scoop that ball up while the ball was over the plane?
Even during a down year, Texas still gets all the bounces and favorable calls from the officials. Disgusting.
Texas is trying to give this game away, but the refs and dumb luck conspire against them.
I think he was down the first time and funmbled but got it back the 2nd time. Refs made the right call both times.
The first play definitely looked like a fumble to me. The second was the right call, but that's two times in a row Texas coughed up the ball.
Yea pretty close seeing the replay again and again. I don't see enough to overturn it though.
Incredible execution in the clutch by Texad here.
Have been terrible. It's gonna cost ISU a deserved win
I'd be furious if that happened to Michigan.
Congrats Texas. You just lucked your way into a 1-point lead. Let's all dance around and act like we did something.
Texas got a few lucky calls here.
I think Brown was down and certainly not enough to overturn it. I'm usually first to jump on the refs but they have been right tonight.
ISU going down the field and winning this would be the best thing ever
The entire pile was in the endzone. What are you reviewing?
1) Not over yet. They just need a FG
2) I keep thinking about that hail mary at the end of the 1st half.
what about that dropped pass that forced IAST to kick a FG right before that? They probably would have scored a TD there and chewed up more clock. That was probably an 11 pt dropped pass...
then all the penalties
Whatever, Texas got out played. Again.
The Cyclones only need a FG to win. They have 51 seconds and are facing GERG.
After further review....... Theses Refs are freaking terrible!
remember, we're still talking about GERG here
XP would have been fitting.
Iowa State can do this. Likely on an 80 yard TD on ISU's first play if history tells us anything about GERG
So much for home cookin.
I guess i am in the minority but i don't think the refs have been that bad. I think Brown was down before the strip and it wa clearly PI in the end zone. That being said, here is hoping for a field goal by Iowa state to win!
Buckle up, 1 more first down and a rush FG....
Let's go GERG!
I hate the spike here. Run a play!
Guess thats why you spike it
Gerg gets lucky
Wow horrible clock management
Jesus christ come on
What was the QB thinking there? That was the worst time in the world to take off. And game over.
IAST couldnt get out of their own way.
Just throw it right off the dude's facemask. Great option.
Texas will still lose to Oklahoma by 50.
Texas gets lucky, wins.
With the Akron game, I'm not sure if those were Big Ten officials or not, but we did get some fortunate calls to run the clock/not run the clock at the end of that game.
Texas just got bailed out by Big12 refs in a Big12 game. No wonder Nebraska, Mizzou and A&M left - it's all about Texas in the Big12.
On a differnt note, I'm pretty sure I jinxed UCLA as going 3 - 0 tonight would just be way too good a start to week 6.
I think we should invite ISU to the Big Tennnnnn because they would fit right in!
Nice win by Texas. Didn't know they started incorporating black and white stripes into their road unis.
That last Texas drive was a freaking disaster by the officials. 2 Pis (one very legit), one blatant hold (ironically on the last PI, Left DE got off the OT and gets spun around right in front of McCoy), one missed fumble, and one fumble where the nose of the ball breaks the plane and then get's recovered by UT, meaning it should be a touchback...
Iowa State outgained Texas by a considerable margin, but 10 penalties for 118 total yards - 2 of them very painful PI calls - were part of the reason that this did not go the way of the Cyclones. Also, Big 12 officiating is apparently done while wearing welding goggles.
As Hinton rightly pointed out:
That said, Texas is basically terrible. Not in the tank tonight. Played its ass off and needed a ton of breaks to beat Iowa State by one.
— Matt Hinton (@MattRHinton) October 4, 2013
It's pretty hard to argue with that truth.
How about this: This is what Michigan might have looked like had Lloyd Carr stayed on one more season into 2008...
That's very magnanimous, which I admire. But let's not forget the name GERG originated at Syracuse. Homeboy has a resume. No es bueno...
Are you really defending Greg Robinson while simultaneously calling our current staff "pathetic"? You're going to break the internet
It's alway's someone else's fault, eh? By my standard, both people that took over for GERG did better than he did with the same Jimmys and Joes. Scott Shafer and Greg Mattison. But, hey lets make excuses for him and not hold him accountable for his most recent performances. Brady Hoke took over tire fires at three programs and turned them all around. Jim Harbaugh did it. Pete Caroll did it. Charlie Strong. The list goes on. Good coaches can do that. Did I mention Scott Shafer?
35 years is a long time. GERG may have been a viable coordinator once upon a time but it is no longer that time. If you want him, you can have him.
thanks to Greg the mastermind
'Maybe the refs hate Texas enough
To save Mack’s job for another week.'
Texas will still get pummeled by Oklahoma by 40+ for the 3rd straight year. That will be what costs Mack Brown.
If Mack is smart, will announce that he is going retire at the end of this season.
dude in an eastern eagles hat got face time on the nfl game.
Watching UCLA - Utah on Fox 1.
I can't stand the way Fox covers College Football . . . as a way to kill time until the NFL is on.
They prop up NFL has-been announcers, they talk about CFB players predominately in terms of where they'll go in the draft, they spend the half-time break pimping non-CFB sports, they even recycle the NFL theme music.
If you are going to cover College Football, then cover College Football. If you'd rather be doing something else, then get the hell out.
ESPN can be annoying, but I can watch a full day of College Football covereage and not once feel like it's just a warm up for the NFL. They genuinely appreciate CFB and cover it on its own merits. It's not just a "platform" to pimp the other stuff they really care about.
I unfortunately have to watch a lot of the Pac-12 games on Fox. Everthing about tha network is just plain garish. Remember, these are the people who thought it would be a good idea to broadcast hockey games with a superimposed spotlight on the puck and low-res lightning bolts appearing when shots were taken.
At least they have Gus Johnson.
+1 for bringing up the glowing puck. Blue streak for wrist shots, and red for slap shots!
I can't believe Fox hired Petros Papadakis. I have the game muted right now because he is so annoying.
The Utah Defense is better than I thought. UCLA's is good too, though, so they just need to avoid stupid errors for me and I'll be at peace.
I bet that opening game in 2015 at Utah will be on FS1
Also, that will be a tough game for us, they'll be all jacked up for us, we better come ready to play that game.
so much for avoiding stoopid errors...
does UCLA struggling here with Utah mean that Utah is way better than Nebraska?
All I know is that Utah's defense is much better.
Obviously Nebraska has its issues, but Utah might just be pretty damn good. UCLA has a +3 TOM...and they're winning by a FG. But, points off turnovers is 3 - 7 (I think), advantage Utah. So, UCLA's pick was devastating (obviously).
Transitive property might deceive us here. It's possible that Utah and UCLA are both legit and Nebraska is, well, not.
Go. Sorry Ill Eagle, but I've got a degree from Utah.
No apologies necessary. This was a soft play, goes with the territory. I underrated the Utes, gotta pay tuition to learn things, you know?
Of course, that whole Gardner-style pick 6 didn't help but....eh whattayagonnado?
Wow. That was a terrible pass.
clutch INT setting up a potential push...do that isht, 17.
Hundley is the west coast Devin Gardner.
Of course you are.
Kraken sure knows how to make this isht interesting, don't he?
Come on Utah, need a td. Help Michigan in the polls.
I better rethink this account. At this rate -- win, lose, or draw -- I will single-handedly win The Tears of Unfathomable Sadness every week. No doubt about it. I don't even love those hoes! Sho luv dat money do...
Whatever. 3 - 0. Tomorrow never dies.
