Thursday night football - open thread

Submitted by Voltron is Handsome on

For anyone who wants to get away from the ridiculousness that is the Michigan football program for a night, there is football to watch tonight. Tonight's slate features:

UCF at Houston, 7:00 on ESPN

Florida Atlantic at Florida International, 7:00 and not on television

Arizona at Oregon, 10:30 on ESPN

I'm not a big NFL fan, but the Vikings play in Green Bay at 8:30 on NFL Network.

I think that sounds about right. The game might be competitive in the first half, but Oregon will kick their asses in the second half. Typical RR though. Starts off well with four wins, but it's about to get real for him yet again due to conference play.

Don't wanna post a thread for it since there's only one score to report, but Michigan Women's Soccer got a nice win today.

They gave up an early goal at home to defending B1G champion Nebraska and never looked back. Nicky Waldeck had a coming-out party today. Her first career hat trick, the first by a Wolverine since Ezurike in 2011.

Each goal was literally identical, I shit you not. She caught the goalie cheating up every time and just took it around her and bumped it in.

She scored the game winner with under a minute to play last week against MSU.

Michigan is now back in a first place tie with Penn State at 15 points. They play later this season in Ann Arbor. I think that game decides who the B1G Champion will be.

Michigan actually beat the eventual-champion Nebraska last year but a tie against Wisconsin cost them their first B1G Championship.

I've been around sporadically this week so maybe I missed something, but why is WD getting neg banged on every post? I don't see what he said here to piss people off unless it's just that some people automatically downvote soccer. Just wondering.

Vikings blow.

Will be watching that late game as well.

I have Brandon/Hoke fatigue - can't read another thread on these topics until I see the one titled "(either name/both) fired".

Why would you "hate" him? He tried his ass off. He just did a bad job at Michigan. He didn't tell our defense - hey guys, go out and suck. By all accounts he was a good guy who wanted to win, but couldn't for a number of reasons - some of them his fault, others not so much. I wanted him fired by the end of year 2, but never "hated" him.

and the facts support me. I was not anti-RR so much as anti-incompetence which is why I want Brandon and Hoke fired. Oh and I hated the hiring of Hoke.

There were and are RR haters and I condemn that. The man did not try to lose. He wanted to win here. He, like Hoke, just wasn't good enough as a head coach to do it.

My side? My "side" is the one that wants Michigan to win and to win the right way(ethically-speaking, nothing to do with schematics). I support any coach who does that. That is my only concern.

This is the ONLY place RR has failed, so it must be him, not the dysfunctional institution who couldn't pony up the extra $10,000 a year for his DC, who's AD watches game film with the coordinators without the coach present, who's bitter previous coach roamed the halls as an assistant AD and promised to sign any players' transfer requests after RR was hired, etc, etc, etc.

Rich Rod's record was worse than Hoke's, but we root him on while we vilify our own guy. I really don't get this place sometimes.

I agree with you to an extent. RR totally crapped the bed at Michigan and left the program far worse for it. But, I expect that the response will be that rr improved every year (in total wins, not defense, special teams or even offense against good teams). By contrast, hoke's team has progressively regressed in every facet of the game.

RR had to start from scratch and was gimped from day one

Hoke takes over, makes the offense worse, and they win more games because he's allowed to bring in a high caliber DC. That's all that happened, offensive production sucked, we could kick extra points and make them, and defense picked up in intensity.

The reason I really hate that RR didn't get another year is really because I think Denard and even DG likely got the short end of the stick under Hoke... I think DG could have been a heisman candidate if the PTSD didn't kick in from the inept offensive coaching over the past few years. I know, hypotheticals are just hypotheticals....    But if RR didn't deserve another year, why is Hoke still here?

RR already beat the Ducks last year.... 42-16......    I mean, it's in Oregon this time, and Oregon is a little better.... but how much better?

I will be at the Oregon Arizona game. Look for me in the Michigan sweatshirt hoping RR doesn't win. Because otherwise... well, that would be painful on so many levels.

Now that football is back...can we ease up on the minute-by-minute Hoke/Brandon/UMvMinny updates?

I wasn't going to make a thread about Hoke/Brandon/UMvMinny updates asking people to stop making so many threads about Hoke/Brandon/UMvMinny updates...but what do you guys say?

Obviously the big/breaking news is certainly thread worthy. And anything from a major outlet or credible source is certainly thread worthy.

But I'm talking about the "random thought" threads - which is the vast majority of them. The "Why I Want Bradon To Hire The Next Coach" / "Why No Love For Mike Leach?" type threads. Or the petition threads - especially the petition threads. The threads that are now +2/-52 in upvote/downvotes.

I love this Open Thread group, you all are like the family within the MGoFamily...so I come to you first with this proposal. Do you all agree that we've had enough time for the wave of emotions and now is the time to monitor what's threadworthy a little more closely?

There's definitely going to be a higher threshold for the fire Brandon/Hoke threads in the very near future. At this point, though, it's looking like that's the only Michigan news anyone is writing about.

Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday and start to see some talk about OL/QB progress and how the divisions are looking and everything about, you know, the games getting played.

If you're in Detroit anyway (not sure if this is on other regional Fox outlets), FAU vs. FIU and all its "OH GOD WHAT IS THIS?" is on Fox Sports Detroit right now. Of course, they promise to end the bleeding and switch to Tigers postgame as soon as the game on TBS concludes.
