Thursday NCAAFB Open Thread: #4 Ole Miss @ SoCar

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

Looks like the lines are Ole Miss -4 or -4.5. Only a 7 point favorite on a neutral site seems a bit strange (I'd expected higher). I haven't seen enough of the Rebels to know just how good they might be, so maybe not.

Open thread for general discussion, click-clack, giggity!

Yeah, I thought Ole Miss would be favored by a bit more than that. Kinda strange.

Another betting line I saw that I found really strange was Stanford -9 vs Washington. What's the deal with that?

I'm not sold on Ole Miss. They lost alot on their OL, and they haven't played anyone so far this season. I like SC in a close game; Spurrier may have found his trigger man with Stephen Garcia.

I took South Carolina and the points. 4.5

I do feel Garcia is finally coming on. Maybe I'll eat those words in a few hours, we'll see. But, I like how consistent he's actually looked. He is still prone for major bonehead moves, but even those have really smoothed out.

I'm on the home dog with the better defense here. Love that they're way more battled tested too. Ole Miss might not be the best team they've faced, at least in their eyes as the game goes on, and that added confidence could push them to win straight up.

That said, I sucked last week, so maybe read this post backwards and see what you come up with.

have you seen Two for the money - when Matthew McConaghy (no idea how to spell it) goes on a bad streak - AL Pacino suggests they do a Twilight Zone style picks - the opposite of everything.

So, your bizarro approach is not that unprecedented.

No, I havent. I remember when it came out I thought it might something semi interesting to watch beause of the gambling hook, but obviously forgot about it. Is it worth checking out?

The opposite of what you think approach is time tested and true, especially when it comes to the NFL the last decade or so.

Also, in the same genre, the opposite of what the public thinks works well too.

So, any games you like this weekend? I'm breaking down the big 10 games right now, any thoughts on those games.

Also, I have been laughing all week at the fact USC is favored by 46.5 over Wassau.

I think CMU is going to destroy Akron, may even double up covering the spread (Akron's qb is suspended for the year and the backup was Sheridan-esque against IU last week) - that is the only one I'm really set on.

I'm torn on the Miami-VT game - I think the 'Canes are the real deal, but it is tough to win in blacksburg.

As a bettor you would get a kick out of Two for the Money - not a great movie by any means, but it is good entertainment.

I like the Canes. That is very abnormal of me as I usually would love the Hokies in conference game coin flip at home. I dont think the Hokies can score to keep pace and the defense has looked vulnerable enough that Jacori can do enough damage. He is so much the better QB than Taylor and thats the difference.

My only hold up is overall uneasiness about going against the Hokies at Lane Stadium.

Believe it or not, but I like Fresno +16 over Cincy. The Bulldogs always play their best in spots like this, big dogs, on the road against a touted BCS team. Plus, the line opened at 14 and look where it is now. I'd rather be on the books side.

I dont know if they've been focusing on it yet, but its fun to point out that Ole Miss Def Coord is Tyrone Nix who formerly served in that role for Spurrier at USC.

His defenses always seemed to fall apart, although they were very injury prone, the back half of seasons in South Carolina.

Anyway, just a rather bland coaching soap opera spice in the SEC

In all fairness, though, it seems like SC is playing kind of undisciplined football. 4, 5 offensive penalties in a single quarter? All of which are boneheaded nonsense (illegal shift/too many men in motion, false start, etc.).

If they settle down, they've got this. Ole Miss really doesn't look like all that, though Snead has made some nice throws to this point. At the same time, though, Miss has showed some signs of putting a fierce running game together. If that happens, I'm not optimistic about the SC D's ability to hold it off.

Guess I am not up on my SEC coaches. I was sitting here wondering how often you have two coaches who both started at other schools in the same conference. (I realize these were not first jobs) I know the OBC had mixed reviews for going to USC from the Gator Alumni. (My running buddy is a gator, I heard about it for a full season every saturday morning on our marathon training runs....)

is so awful. Early today he called Tebow something along the lines of a big-hearted warrior - who doesn't beat you with his ability but his sheer will.

If ole miss can't line up on 3-2 and pound a first down they won't be number 4 for long.

Just as I suspected; Ole Miss OL isn't that good. South Carolina's D is teeing off Snead all night long, as his OL is giving him no pass pro. Looking good on South Carolina beating the spread for me.
