Thursday NCAAFB Open Thread: #4 Ole Miss @ SoCar
Looks like the lines are Ole Miss -4 or -4.5. Only a 7 point favorite on a neutral site seems a bit strange (I'd expected higher). I haven't seen enough of the Rebels to know just how good they might be, so maybe not.
Open thread for general discussion, click-clack, giggity!
September 24th, 2009 at 7:27 PM ^
Looking forward to seeing how Ole Miss holds up against a real (OK, only, but better than Memphis) line without Oher.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:29 PM ^
If Lou is picking South Carolina because he thinks Garcia is a good quarterback, I'm definitely taking Ole Miss.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:45 PM ^
Nah, Garcia is just Lou's excuse to be a shameless homer as always. In his world ND and SC (not that SC) should play for the MNC every year.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:31 PM ^
Yeah, I thought Ole Miss would be favored by a bit more than that. Kinda strange.
Another betting line I saw that I found really strange was Stanford -9 vs Washington. What's the deal with that?
September 24th, 2009 at 8:16 PM ^
Maybe they think Washington will have a letdown after the big win? Even that shouldn't warrant such a big line the other way. I don't know a ton about betting lines so there is, I'm sure, a much better explanation than this.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:35 PM ^
I hope the ol' ball coach gets beat down!
September 24th, 2009 at 7:49 PM ^
...chug a beer every time one of the announcers calls Spurrier the OBC.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:39 PM ^
I'm not sold on Ole Miss. They lost alot on their OL, and they haven't played anyone so far this season. I like SC in a close game; Spurrier may have found his trigger man with Stephen Garcia.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:43 PM ^
sold on the Rebels either.
But Jevan Snead is the real deal, he will be the difference in this game.
I'll bet Garcia does one boneheaded thing and hurts his team.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:57 PM ^
but his decision making can be questionable at times. He picks up too many yards and TD's in garbage time.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:40 PM ^
I took South Carolina and the points. 4.5
I do feel Garcia is finally coming on. Maybe I'll eat those words in a few hours, we'll see. But, I like how consistent he's actually looked. He is still prone for major bonehead moves, but even those have really smoothed out.
I'm on the home dog with the better defense here. Love that they're way more battled tested too. Ole Miss might not be the best team they've faced, at least in their eyes as the game goes on, and that added confidence could push them to win straight up.
That said, I sucked last week, so maybe read this post backwards and see what you come up with.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:46 PM ^
have you seen Two for the money - when Matthew McConaghy (no idea how to spell it) goes on a bad streak - AL Pacino suggests they do a Twilight Zone style picks - the opposite of everything.
So, your bizarro approach is not that unprecedented.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:03 PM ^
No, I havent. I remember when it came out I thought it might something semi interesting to watch beause of the gambling hook, but obviously forgot about it. Is it worth checking out?
The opposite of what you think approach is time tested and true, especially when it comes to the NFL the last decade or so.
Also, in the same genre, the opposite of what the public thinks works well too.
So, any games you like this weekend? I'm breaking down the big 10 games right now, any thoughts on those games.
Also, I have been laughing all week at the fact USC is favored by 46.5 over Wassau.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:09 PM ^
I think CMU is going to destroy Akron, may even double up covering the spread (Akron's qb is suspended for the year and the backup was Sheridan-esque against IU last week) - that is the only one I'm really set on.
I'm torn on the Miami-VT game - I think the 'Canes are the real deal, but it is tough to win in blacksburg.
As a bettor you would get a kick out of Two for the Money - not a great movie by any means, but it is good entertainment.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:24 PM ^
I like the Canes. That is very abnormal of me as I usually would love the Hokies in conference game coin flip at home. I dont think the Hokies can score to keep pace and the defense has looked vulnerable enough that Jacori can do enough damage. He is so much the better QB than Taylor and thats the difference.
My only hold up is overall uneasiness about going against the Hokies at Lane Stadium.
Believe it or not, but I like Fresno +16 over Cincy. The Bulldogs always play their best in spots like this, big dogs, on the road against a touted BCS team. Plus, the line opened at 14 and look where it is now. I'd rather be on the books side.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:00 PM ^
Based on my picks last week, I would not count your money. However, I agree with your reasoning on the defense.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:42 PM ^
Gamecock's Total D is 15th Nationally and played @ Georgia pretty tough (L 37 - 41). Ole Miss has played NOBODY. I'll take the smelly genitals +4.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:50 PM ^
Smelly genitals = Houston's Nutts?
September 24th, 2009 at 7:59 PM ^
lulz, his name is Girly.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:03 PM ^
sigh... punches that will go unpunished by the SEC conference...
September 24th, 2009 at 8:03 PM ^
every time Jesse "the Bachelor" Palmer talks?
September 24th, 2009 at 8:03 PM ^
zOMG! PUNCHES THROWN! GET OFF YOUR TREADMILL, JIM DELANEY! WE NEED ACTION! WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!
September 24th, 2009 at 8:04 PM ^
So does that count as Garcia's one bone head play by not protecting the ball? SoCar has looked like the better team so far.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:10 PM ^
strikes early.
Killed a nice drive that probably should have gone for a TD.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:16 PM ^
GO GIT EM REBS! I'm sorry that was the "McCoy" side of the family coming out there...But seriously Ole Miss should kill SC
September 24th, 2009 at 8:19 PM ^
I dont know if they've been focusing on it yet, but its fun to point out that Ole Miss Def Coord is Tyrone Nix who formerly served in that role for Spurrier at USC.
His defenses always seemed to fall apart, although they were very injury prone, the back half of seasons in South Carolina.
Anyway, just a rather bland coaching soap opera spice in the SEC
September 24th, 2009 at 8:35 PM ^
This head ref is definitely new at his job. He's fumbled a few calls so far.
Penalties, TO's not getting called, drops. Things just aren't going SC's way.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:46 PM ^
In all fairness, though, it seems like SC is playing kind of undisciplined football. 4, 5 offensive penalties in a single quarter? All of which are boneheaded nonsense (illegal shift/too many men in motion, false start, etc.).
If they settle down, they've got this. Ole Miss really doesn't look like all that, though Snead has made some nice throws to this point. At the same time, though, Miss has showed some signs of putting a fierce running game together. If that happens, I'm not optimistic about the SC D's ability to hold it off.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:42 PM ^
how much heat Houston Nutt got for switching teams within the conference? I don't remember hearing/reading too much about it.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:43 PM ^
canned at Arkansas - so I'm guessing it is not a big deal.
unlike Tubberville, who said he would be at Ole Miss for a long time (not sure of his exact words but it was something along those lines) then bolted for the Auburn job.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:51 PM ^
Guess I am not up on my SEC coaches. I was sitting here wondering how often you have two coaches who both started at other schools in the same conference. (I realize these were not first jobs) I know the OBC had mixed reviews for going to USC from the Gator Alumni. (My running buddy is a gator, I heard about it for a full season every saturday morning on our marathon training runs....)
September 24th, 2009 at 9:02 PM ^
I'm sure Spurrier's was an unpopular move, but it was somewhat mitigated by the fact that he went to the League for a year and failed horribly before coming back to the college ranks.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:42 PM ^
is so awful. Early today he called Tebow something along the lines of a big-hearted warrior - who doesn't beat you with his ability but his sheer will.
If ole miss can't line up on 3-2 and pound a first down they won't be number 4 for long.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:51 PM ^
I think the MSM went way overboard with the hype on Ole Miss; this team isn't even a top 25 team the way they are playing today. Snead looks terrible throwing today.
September 24th, 2009 at 8:58 PM ^
I like SC and the points. Their D is pretty stout and Ole Miss hasn't really shown me anything special. SC has a competent offense as well.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:07 PM ^
Some of these faces OBC has been making have been classic.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:11 PM ^
clock management - just terrible
September 24th, 2009 at 9:44 PM ^
Got my hopes up there for a second. Thought we'd actually see a touchdown. Impressive run after the catch though. OBC has some good strong WRs.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:46 PM ^
And FG it is. This is slightly better than watching an Mississippi State/Auburn game from any year other than this.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:48 PM ^
that MSU(not that MSU)Auburn game.
That was like an experiment in torture.
Major ups to the SC receiver with those YACs - very nice work.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:52 PM ^
Just as I suspected; Ole Miss OL isn't that good. South Carolina's D is teeing off Snead all night long, as his OL is giving him no pass pro. Looking good on South Carolina beating the spread for me.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:52 PM ^
awful - this is killing his draft stock - I don't think that S. Cack-a-lacky's D is all that great (see game v. Georgia).
September 24th, 2009 at 9:57 PM ^
And here comes a 1st and Goal go to another FG from the 13 yard line.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:57 PM ^
If the Gamecocks can score a TD here - they might ice this thing.
September 24th, 2009 at 9:59 PM ^
And there it is. Lots of time left. Can't call it iced yet.
September 24th, 2009 at 10:05 PM ^
I watched Snead and the Rebels take on Memphis in their opener, and based on that performance and what I've seen tonight, he does not strike me as someone that can go lead a team back from a 2-score deficit.
September 24th, 2009 at 10:22 PM ^
Their left tackle is a sieve.
September 24th, 2009 at 10:23 PM ^
And Norwood is a monster.
September 24th, 2009 at 10:24 PM ^
