Throwback Thursday "The New Math"

Submitted by carlos spicywiener on

The matchup between Michigan and Penn State 10 years ago was epic. Joe Pa wanted his two seconds back on the clock, as his QB lead a fourth quarter TD drive. Lloyd Carr argued for two seconds as well, which would be instrumental in letting his own QB do the same.

You all know the details of that game. But here's Brian's article from a decade ago. One of my favorites, and I'm sure one of yours as well.

86? 86? At that moment, if he had ripped off his outer jersey and revealed the gleaming 1 underneath we all would have understood. At that moment, if he had decided he was going to fly we all would have understood. We were beyond Thunderdome. Two teams entered, one team left, and it was ours because we had a hero.

After the game, I felt a tug on my shirt, and looked down to see the adorable moppet, beaming. At the half it had been revealed to myself and those around me that this was his first-ever Michigan game; I had said "sorry it couldn't be a better one," further proving that everything that comes out of my mouth about Michigan football is wrong, wrong, gloriously wrong. The kid didn't say good game, or call me mister. In fact, he just said "hi." I gave him a high five. "You're good luck, kid, keep coming, " I said.

However, I left something out. I hereby correct the error: Yes, little child who probably doesn't use the Internets and even if you did you probably would have gotten bored and seen what was up with Pokemon or whatever, there is a number 1. He wears number 86. It's the new math.

One of my favorite highlights ever! I watched that game with three Penn St fans I had just started working with out of college. I was pretty quiet all game not wanting to piss my new coworkers off. But when Henne to Manningham happened I jumped up and screamed YES! I pissed them off but could care less! Probably cost them a shot at the national championship. Sooooi sweet.

What ever happened to that high school kid that posted as The New Math (or something close) way back when? He had his teen angsty moments like we all did but he always seemed like a good kid.

I was 13 years old at that game, I remember I was on my knees crying and praying that somehow Michigan would win. I'll never forget how loud it got in the Big House that night, and high-fiving every Michigan fan around me. I don't remember ever being so excited in my life haha, good times.

1) 10 years later it is still wonderful. 2) We have a wide receiver on the 10th anniversary team who just happened to score 4 TD's in the game that took place the week before PSU. Here's to Jehu Chesson doing his best Mario Manningham impression Saturday as we beat PSU.

Wow..ten years.  That ranks way up there as being one of those games I feel very fortunate to have seen at the stadium.  That game and UTL I are my two favorites.....so far.  Maybe this year the Saturday after Thanksgiving will top both of them.

Than the last two minutes of that game.

Some folks started to leave after Penn State's last score, but I had that feeling we could (would?) come back.

The score with 8 seconds left was magical.  The crowd went crazy good.

Watching the highlights...boy Mike Hart BEAST MODE.  Our running backs should be required to watch this game film talk about yards after contact!

This game hurts my heart a little. I had been to every Michigan vs. Penn St game since they joined the Big Ten (home and away). My cousin scheduled her wedding DURING this game in Boston so I had to miss it.

I packed an extra suitcase and brought my TiVo with me and set it up in the hotel. I recorded the game and went radio silent during the wedding. Everyone there knew I was doing this and people heard about the game, but somehow I kept myself in the dark.

At 1 AM I went up to my room (was sharing a room with my dad) and we started watching the game. By the time I got to the end, it was about 2:30 and my dad was sound asleep. When he hit Manningham in the end zone, I went nuts. All the while, my dad was sound asleep! It was very surreal seeing this at 2:30AM knowing I was celebrating alone, and very quietly jumping up and down, but it created a memory for a lifetime!

Was just thinking about that. I was a senior in college watching the game in my dorm (didn't go to Michigan). I freaked out after Manningham's catch and ran across the hall to my buddy's room who was a massive ND fan. Got there just in time to see Jarrett's catch on 4th-and-17 and then the Bush Push.

We both got drunk that night. For very different reasons.

And here I was expecting some sort of Tom Lehrer appreciation thread. But this'll do. This and the Braylon / MSU overtime game were by far the best and most exciting games of my time as a student. My group had tickets in the first row during the 2005 season, and when the game was over, a bunch of the players ran down to the student section and celebrated the victory with everybody. It was (and always will be) great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

I took Biology 102: Practical Botany in the Winter 1994 term.  Estabrook burst into song during one lecture, singing part of Lehrer's "Pollution."  Did not know until I just looked him up that he passed away four years ago.  A very interesting man.  I still have a plant from that class, though it could use re-potting.

When Manningham was on, he was really f-ing on.  I remember him torching Wisconsin in 2006.

was a senior at Michigan in 2005 (i had no even met her yet), she had student tickets and made to every game... except for this one. her story and probably true is that she got so hammered at a tailgate before the game that she didn't feel like going... the unused tickets still sit in the china cabinet at her parents house and i shake my head every time i look at them...

reminded me of where I was when The New Math game took place. I had been at work while the game was played. When I came home I had no idea what had happened. I put on the tape and was stunned by the ending. Suffice it to say it was a wonderful night.

This was THE game for me. Although I had been a fan prior to this, this was the game that HOOKED me. I can still hear the student section roaring after that final catch to this day. I've been chasing that same dragon ever since.
