Threet - Biggest Impact Transfer?
Matt Hayes of Sporting News calls Threet's transfer to ASU the Biggest Impact Transfer. Good luck to him, hopefully he can succeed in an offense that's better suited to his abilities.

I'd say the smorgasbord of defensive talent that's gone is the biggest impact.
to read the linked article before commenting on it.
this article is about the transfer that will have the biggest impact on college football in 2010, not what will have an effect on U-M.
I believe the article refers to the biggest impact on the new team, not on the team they left.
the team they left two seasons ago now.
I can definitely see him doing well there. The offense there will play much more to his skill set. As an Adrian High alum myself, I hope he does well there.
There is no reason to dislike this kid. He came to Michigan to play in the Lloyd offense and got stuck playing in the RR offense. As far as I'm concerned, he made the best of a bad situation.
So long as it has no negative impact on Michigan whatsoever, I wish him the best of luck ...
Threet was serviceable. If he had stuck around, he probably would have proven a good mentor for Tate and Denard, and would have been a serviceable arm when Tate got injured.
Unless Threet's throwing motion has changed significantly, I can't see him having much positive impact at a D-1 level.
Jesus, I can't even imagine that a kid that played in 3 systems in 3 years, might actually improve his mechanics given some time in a system. That's just unpossible.
Executive Summary: Tater you're such a giant douchebag.
Threet had the nasty habit of dropping his elbow on 98% of his throws which caused them to sail high or way off mark. That is something that has nothing to do with what system you play in and everything to do with the basics of being a QB.
If he hasn't fixed that by now, it is reasonable to assume it is a flaw he can't correct and one that will permanently hamper his development.
Will it hamper it as much as being a QB at Arizona State will?
The ASU coeds should provide all of the inspiration he needs to get it fixed.
You make it sound like the mechanics are not part of the system that each coaching staff brings. Having to tweak things to satisfy how each particular QB coach wants your throwing motion to look hinders development.
at least I hope they don't. The best QB's all have similar motions - up on their toes with a high release over the head. That is QB 101 and no coach, regardless of system, actively tells their QB to drop the elbow right before their release or to side arm their throws. Those that do, or allow that to continue, are doing a HUGE disservice to their QB's.
I liken it to the Tebow issues: word on the street is that Florida spent a lot of time and money trying to correct his looping delivery but anytime he faced pressure in a game, he reverted b/c that is how he was most comfortable.
I liken it to the Tebow issues: word on the street is that Florida spent a lot of time and money trying to correct his looping delivery but anytime he faced pressure in a game, he reverted b/c that is how he was most comfortable.Doesn't this reinforce what we're saying about Threet? They try to change Tebow's mechanics before his senior year and he can't do it well because it's something new to him and he's been doing it less than a year? Wouldn't it reasonable to expect him to look much better after he's given another year so he can get comfortable with it and not have to think about it as he's doing it? Likewise, shouldn't Threet look much better once he finally gets to be in a particular offensive system for more than a year?
But my understanding is that Florida had been trying to fix his mechanics for more than just this past year. I just don't know if throwing from a spread vs. a pro set really changes your delivery of the ball.
I hope you are correct as the kid is clearly a gamer who gave everything he had for our program.
isn't it 3 systems in five years?
GT, sit out, UM, sit out, ASU
07 - graduated early and was at GT, then transferred to Michigan, and sat out 2007 season.
08 - was at Michigan, then transferred after the season
09- was at Arizona State, but had to sit out the year.
When you transfer schools, that doesn't mean you're not at that school learning the playbook and the system. It just means that you can't see the field, but you still get financial aid, and you still are practicing with the team.
I remember Colt Brennon breaking all kinds of NCAA records with his crazy side-arm slinging motion. Then he got drafted.
he got a job at Kroger
Last I heard he was bagging Jessica Simpson.
could be a positive impact for PAC10 dbs.
Threet made the most of a situation he didn't sign up for, and I wish him the best.
He always seemed like a good character, so best wishes to him. (Ditto for Sheridan.) Young QBs are usually farther from their ceilings than players at other positions, so he could end up thriving at some point.
Still, based on his '08 performance, I'll be surprised if he really tears it up. Other than Sheridan I've never seen a worse QB at Michigan.
Dark note: If he winds up on the All Pac 10 team, the anti-RichRod crowd will scream it from the rooftops. They'll assume that he performed as he did in '08 entirely because of RichRod.

Another aside: I wonder if any of the Family Values jacka$$es noticed this tidbit >>> "... who Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez told me in January will have "a lot of success" in a pro-style offense..." Awfully nice of him, isn't it? Somehow I doubt the Freep will notice it.

I respond: Did you miss Leach or Navarre as freshmen starters at Michigan, playing terribly in an offense uniquely suited for their skill set?
I'm too young for Leach. I remember Navarre in '00 (subbing for Henson) and '01. I think he was the first guy to lose to Tressel and it was painful to watch him at times, but I'd still take him over the '08 Threet. By the way, I'm adjusting for the system as much as possible.
I'm not sure where Threet's ceiling is. It could be really high. But, I can't put a positive spin on his on-field performance two years ago.
was pretty good -- for a freshman; clearly, he got better as he got older, and Leach was in the same offense that he ran in HS. The offense was the strength of the team that year -- even with the freshman at QB. Sure, he and the rest of the team couldn't score against OU in the 76 Orange bowl, but then nobody else scored that much against that defense; it was scary good.
But it should be added that he was really good at what he was supposed to do - run the option and get the ball to Rob Lytle and Gordon Bell. Bo wasn't known for throwing QBs in the 70s.

Leach did a fine job running the option, but he was absolutely horrific as a passer that year.
I give Threet a lot of credit for gutting it out and playing for Michigan. Clearly the system did not fit him and he was constantly injured throughout the season but did his best for the team. Good Luck to him!
But as for his time at Michigan-Like the App State game-It never happend. Who is this Steve Threet you speak of?
McGuffie to Rice is HUGE! 40 touchdowns a season. Hope he tears it up.
I'll always wonder what he could have done as a slot receiver here. I wish they would have tried him there. I thought he was great on wheel routes.
I just remember him getting crushed a couple of times on those wheel routes. He needed a year in the weight room before playing.
He needed blockers.
I hope McGuffie has a long and successful career in college and beyond. Seemed like a good kid that just didn't fit in away from home. Better he transfer than wind up like Ricky Williams.
ricky williams had a pretty good year last year on top of pretty good years before the drug issues. there are probably better examples.

My only hope is the kid learns how to run and doesn't end up with serious head injury problems when he finishes his collegiate career.
He always ran hard despite the fact that he ended up getting killed at the end of about half of his runs.
Hopefully he is a huge impact transfer and ends up in the NFL. I felt bad for him in 2008.
Horseface!!!!!
Really was a classy kid, he was stuck playing in a offense he didn't fit at all and he never complained or whined about it. He transferred but did it quietly and didn't trash the team because his skills didn't fit(looking at you Toney Clemons and Justin Boren). As long as Arizona State doesn't play Michigan I'll be cheering for him.
The poor guy transferred here with the idea of beating Mallett out for the starting job, and then Lloyd went and retired on him and we went all spread. Despite that, he stuck around and agreed to give it a go.
I it didn't work out all too well, but he still did what he could, and he stuck it out for a year before leaving for something more suited to him, and for doing that, for bridging the gap, I will always be a fan.*
*Unless by some twist of fate we end up playing ASU in a bowl game in the next two years. Then he can go Death Roh.
He committed to Georgia Tech then Paul Johnson came in with his triple option attack, so Threet quietly transferred to a nice pro style offense in michigan. Rich Rod came and he had to go to a school that can favor his skill set. I personally wish him the best

"I will only comment on those who play for the University of Michigan."
Still no excuse for the way he "threw" the ball. He was a 4-star QB with a redshirt year. Even with the Spread Offense we run, he should have still been able to hit guys who were 10-15 yards open- With time to throw, might I add. So I am a little less forgiving toward Threet. That being said, I hope he is successful at Arizona St.
