Three Years Ago Today...

Submitted by VCavman24 on

For those of you not enthralled by the basketball game going on right now, let's take a trip down memory lane, three years ago today...

The CCHA Champion Michigan Wolverines had a tough test against #2 (Human Poll #1) North Dakota, who was eyeing its 8th NCAA Title.  The Wolverines had few believers and were dominated most of the game, but a guy named Shawn Hunwick made 40 saves to allow the Wolverines to win 2-0 and advance to the National Championship game.

And you know...  Stay Classy...

So so deeply satisfying to beat that team. We absolutely should've lost like 3-0 or 4-0 but we got the 1st goal and camped out to a victory.

The level of satisfaction from that game is right up there with the Florida Capital One Bowl and beating Syracuse last year just because of the serious lack of respect each of those teams were getting before those games.

I agree, it's definitely one of my favorite games.  North Dakota was certainly awesome that year, but NOBODY seemed to think Michigan, who won the CCHA, had any chance at beating them.  And the #1 rule of Hockey is that anybody can beat anybody, so that certainly ticked off the team and Shawn enough to get the win.  The loss two days later still stings though.

I have this game saved on my computer though and I frequently watch highlights of it.  Actually I have all four of that year's tournament games saved on my computer.

When you let up like 9 or 10 powerplay opportunities you're going to get burned. I can still see the 2-on-1 late in the game between Hagelin and Rust I believe that we couldn't hammer home.

The two minutes of constant pressure in overtime is the infamous feeling of doom you get in hockey. It was like watching the game winning goal stretched across two full minutes; it was becoming increasingly inevitable the longer we failed to clear our own zone

An awesome weekend. I knew early that the only way I'd be able to attend a Michigan Hockey game that season was if they made the final... And that's exactly what happened. That team was a joy to follow. It was, you'll recall, also the year of Hagelin single-handedly linking WMU on senior night. The finish was just a bit short (and I live in the worst place in the world to live after), but that can't besmirch what a great run it was.

I watched Michigan beat NoDak from Corvallis, Oregon and then bought a plane ticket the next day and made it to Minny for the title game. What a great weekend that was. Everything but the result of the last game was amazing.

We were great that night.  I remember watching the game.  I was in Florida at the time wishing they had scheduled the 2011 Frozen Four in St. Pete.  North Dakota was supposed to blow us away and win it at that year but we were the better team on the ice that night and Hunwick was great.

The final was another great game and we came as close as you can come to the NC without winning.  The losing goal stung.

stephonerjking, I was at Yost the night Hagelin single-handedly won the game for us on Senior night.  That was also a great game.

It's hard to believe it was only three years ago.
