Three MSU players formally charged with sexual assault
Ingham Country prosecutor has charged three unnamed Michigan State football players with sexual assault. Story coming soon.
— Dan Murphy (@DanMurphyESPN) June 5, 2017
UPDATE: A brief article from Murphy.
"I have decided to authorize sexual assault charges against the three persons whose warrants were requested by the MSU Police," prosecutor Carol Siemon said. "We are alleging that on the night of January 16, those three persons sexually assaulted a woman in an East Lansing apartment on campus."
The players have not yet been named.
UPDATE 2: Names likely to be released tomorrow:
Prosecutor's office says it doesn't release names until people are arraigned. Arraignments are expected to come tomorrow.

Wait, can you be charged and unnamed?
I don't believe you can. It looks like Dan Murphy has received news that the three players are being charged from an anonymous source, likely someone within the prosecutor's office.
Willing to bet names will be out any minute.
I know it's just a tweet, but that is worded very poorly.
I don't disagree. When you're trying to break the story that "the three players that have been rumored to be under investigation for four months have finally been charged, but I can't put names out until I have it completely verified or I'll lose my job", he did about as well as he could with the twitter character limit. But I was confused when I first read it too.
Maybe it's a Game of Thrones "Faceless Man" thing, and when you join MSU football, you have no name???
Look for names tomorrow:
The players have not yet been named. The prosecutor's office does not typically release the names of those charged with crimes until they have been arraigned. The three players are expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
What do YOU think? /s
It's public information. We'll know by the eponymous arraignments. Now identity of the alleged victim *can* be kept secret but I had thought her name was disclosed already.
So, they can look forward to improving to 4-8?
Prosecutors can include John Does in indictments where they know a crime has been committed but don't know the identities of all the conspirators. I've never seen it without at least one named defendant.
They do know the identities of the soon-to-be accused or they won't arraign them. Which they will do tomorrow according to announcement. Zero Does these cases and no relevance whatsoever..
You're rght that there are no unknown actors in this case. I didn't suggest there are. My response directly answers his question whether prosecutors can include unidentified parties in a complaint.
hahaha. The targets are not John Does, the peripheral actors are.

"In our example, we see that this is a case by the United States of America against Keith Johnson and Angela Johnson, who are the two defendants. Sometimes, a criminal case may be brought when the name(s) of some of the defendant(s) are still unknown, such as in large criminal conspiracies where not every member of the conspiracy has been identified at the time of indictment. In such instances, the prosecution may use placeholder names such as “John Doe” or “Jane Doe” for some of the defendants. "
Has authorized the charges, so their names will be released once they are officially charged. I'm guessing this will occur within a day.
What a cesspool.
as Dantonio is a deeply religious man as described in this USA Today article:
When they listen to music, it's usually country or Christian. And that signifies another important part of Dantonio's life and football program.
"He puts God first," MSU freshman running back Delton Williams said of Dantonio in the euphoric locker room after the win against Ohio State "And we put God first. Why do you think we're doing this?"
Dantonio was born and raised Catholic. He quotes scripture often, and several MSU players have said his openness about religion helped make their decisions to play for the Spartans.
"It was a big factor for me," MSU junior defensive end Marcus Rush said. "I think it gives recruits and their parents confidence that he's actually a legit, good guy. You can tell he's not just throwing it out there."
"You can talk about your faith or you can live your faith," he said. "You can talk about this program's culture, or you can be in this culture, live this culture. There's a difference there. Is it smoke or is it real?
EDIT:
Just want to make sure people know I'm mocking Dantonio and his hypocrisy and not religion in general as I obviously know Coach Harbaugh is a religious man and so are many on this board, and religion/politics are to be kept off the board.
I come from a DEEPLY religious background. Was in church upwards of 5 days a week,/memorized entire books/best friend's dad a preacher/best friend's a preacher, now/dated 20+ preachers daughters/christian school/played in 5 church bands at the same time/lead the music in one of them...etc. Never been able to fully "believe", myself. Tried because my entire social structure was in that "club" but always been agnostic/philosophical/scientific. But I CAN tell you that some of the worst people use religion as a mask to hide thier personal demons. Some are good people. Judging anyone based on religious involvement is just as wrong as assuming that everyone with a tattoo is a rapist. There's a lot more to it than that.
But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782
Rich Eisen should do it for her.
Why would anybody want to watch just to find out the answer to this question?
Wouldn't it be great if Harbaugh came out and said "as part of our internal disciplinary process, we make the player sit through the full hour of SC6"?
It's sad that it has to be said, but good on MSU for not trying to cover this up. After all the other shit I've seen in the past few years, I was honestly pleasantly surprise.
They likely would have attempted a cover-up if one had appeared likely to work. A tiger does not change his stripes all that quickly.
This is prejudicial garbage. You are using your personal dislike for them that is based primarily on a sports rivalry to color your opinion of their moral character.
You simply have no evidence about what they might have done, but you are choosing the worst possible explanation because it fits with your preferences. So they do the right thing and you still find a way to make it "not really that right."
Bash them on the football field, and off the field when they deserve it. But they do not deserve it here and they should get credit for that. To go the small-minded "well they probably WOULD have done something wrong" route is something I would expect from bitter RCMB types.
He does not want the facts to ruin his good story, and his lecture.
Amazing, and not in a good way.
Are you a pastor as represented?, or a psychiatrist?
The evidence you speak of is not lacking. It consists of prosecutorial and institutional decisions made in East Lansing over the last twenty years.
I have my opinion, and do not deserve to be told what to do by you. And thank God I do not always get what I deserve, but your approach hardly is consistent with your calling.
And if you think my opinion is small-minded garbage, at least be man enough to say that directly, or put it on your mostly non-sports twitter.
You've ventured an opinion in a public forum, and I have expressed my opinion of your opinion. Based upon your statements here and in the other thread, there appears to be nothing that MSU would do that would lead you to believe that they are interested in doing things the right way; if your statements are an accurate reflection of your mindset, it is impossible for them to respond to this particular case with integrity.
That is prejudgment. You cite 20 years of evidence of cases whose facts we do not know, that take place under different athletic directors, different coaches, different sports, and even various government institutions. You are a lawyer, and you know that those "facts" provide no indication of the mindset or intentions of the staff and administration in the present case.
It's a public forum, and we are debating ideas. If you dislike that, you are free to withhold your opinion; disagreement is not "telling you what to do." At any rate, it is unclear to me what is indirect about the previous post. But, if you'd rather take impulsive personal jabs, I won't tell you what to do.
""Bash them on the football field, and off the field when they deserve it. But they do not deserve it here and they should get credit for that. To go the small-minded "well they probably WOULD have done something wrong" route is something I would expect from bitter RCMB types."
Sounds like telling me how to behave to me, but hey, that's just me.
I merely stated that, in my opinion, they probably would have tried to cover it up were it not for the increased scrutiny brought on by Nassar.
My opinion thereupon becomes "prejudicial garbage" worthy of the "small-minded...bitter RCMB types", yet it is not you, but me, who is taking "impulsive personal jabs".
Wake up and smell the coffee, Pastor. I'm just a Michigan fan, no more, no less, who happens to know something about the criminal justice system.
For reasons only you can explain, you are now a MSU apologist in these matters. See the padre, Pastor, he'll punch your ticket.
I am not going to waste my time reasoning with a MSU terrorist, because that is in essence what you are with this subject. I really don't care what your assessment is of how MSU has handled this, nor whether yout opinion is right or wrong or somewhere in between.
I just think, again, for reasons only you can explain, you have chosen my post to go off on, and I would expect more from a fellow fan, much less a Servant and Pastor.
....Keith Appling and Adreian Payne think it could have been kept under wraps!
He was flat out aiding in covering up a felony. Having a member of the coaching staff directly involved with destroying evidence adds about as much validity that msu is prone to cover up as one would need. Of course alledgedly.LOL.
I really don't think Dantonio would have been part of that, but he hired Blackwell for recruiting advantages and nothing else. As far as I am concerned allowing Robertson on the team pretty much condemns Dantonio. It really reaked of desperation at the time and needless to say he may have been his own worst enemy in this mess. It would have been pretty difficult to cover up felony charges and what I suspect to be some serious convictions in this case and Robertson's.
There the player who stepped up was beaten by his teammates and removed from the team by Butch Jones.
For all the problems Dantonio has had with discipline, I'm glad to hear that he handled this serious case well.
