This thread is not 200 long yet; continue arguing here

By M-Wolverine — January 6th, 2011 at 10:36 PM — 289 comments
Every thread not matter the subject ends up being the same thing. At least you don't have to scroll through miles to get through this one.

Come on...you know you want to.

I'll start: Glen Steele likes Brady Hoke more than you do-

"Coach Hoke has a defensive mind-set, he's a defensive guy, and he loves to coach — he loves what he's doing and being around the guys," said Glen Steele, a defensive end on Carr's 1997 national championship team, which had Hoke as its defensive line coach.
"I'm a huge supporter of Coach Hoke. When you're looking for someone to come in and address where this team is and where it could be, I don't think there's any better guy."

"It's hard to characterize him because he's such an overall good guy," Steele said. "But he knows when to kick it up, and he also knows when to say to a player: 'Hey, we've got to re-focus and get this done.'
"With coaches, there's always a point where screaming and yelling and getting guys fired up is important, and then there's the time when you say: 'Hey, we're all in this together and we've gotta pick it up.' With a coach like him, you don't have to throw fuel on the fire. Players wantto play for him."

(From the dreaded Henning article that Brian linked from the DetNews)

Don't feel you have to talk about Hoke. Open CC/Brandon/everything ever other thread is.

Anyone subjecting themselves to the GoDaddy.com Bowl with (nt)Miami and MTS?

Since this belongs somewhere...

The last line of Gary Patterson's career bio on wikipedia reads...

"After a successful career at TCU, Patterson left the program on January 6 to become the head coach of the University of Michigan football team. He stated his need for good, discounted pizza as a main reason in accepting the offer."

Disagree. Pizza Tracker has changed a significant portion of my life.

That and the Big Chill have been the best things Dave Brandon has done.

And all the fireworks at everything. Really surprised there wasn't any behind him at the press conference.

Seriously

If Brandon had come out like this I would have been a lot more impressed and a lot more confident right now.

I picture MSC as the coach.

I'd have felt better if he'd have come out saying I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream; that's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor... and surviving.

Does anyone believe

DB intentionally waited to fire RR because all the current high value job openings at the time?

Think about it...If RR would have stepped in to the FL or U, imagine what might have transpired.  In my opinion, he would have been a strong candidate for either of those jobs.  If he would have landed a job in FL, imagine the potential transfers [Denard].

By the way, has anybody heard any info regarding players wanting to transfer.  I know it’s early, but usually this type of thing solicits an emotional response.

LC's will always have a place in my marriage

As I proposed to my wife on bended knee, I blanked and said that our love was like little cesear's  pizza (which happened to be sitting in the kitchen waiting for us to eat it for dinner).  To my surprise my wife got it wrong.  She though our love was "Quick and Easy".  I had to correct her that it was "Hot and Ready".

Ugh. My apologies to Illitch. I love him as an owner and I adore his hockey team, but If not for the $5 larges, Illitch would not be selling me another one of his nasty, fast food quality "pizzas".

Seek professional help quickly!

I think you should seek professional help now - your obsession with me is not healthy and I'm starting to get worried about you. You and I can never be together. I've got a wife, a family. I'm not about to lose all that just to be with you. (Do you see what I did there?)

Go on ahead now, run along and get a life. That's it . . . keep going . . . you're doing great!

Only after he conquers the

Only after he conquers the B1G, SEC, couple Rose Bowls, and a few national championships. His fatal mistake will be aggressively recruiting in the UP for strong Scandinavian men for the defensive line. After being caught in a Lake Superior lake effect snowstorm and not showing for work for many days, DB will have no choice but to buy Isle Royale and send Barwis up to track him and show him the way of the wolf. He will return again however.

Just curious

What does everybody think about jon gruden? He seems like a pretty big risk to me (no college HC experience; can he recruit?), but i would be willing to live with gruden if hired

Agreed

Gruden has a very impressive NFL track record, but the complete lack of meaningful college experience (yes, I know he was an assistant for a few years way back when) really concerns me. There's such a big difference between being an NFL X's and O's success and being able to develop college kids -- just ask Charlie Weis.

I'm not saying Gruden is Weis, but I would much, MUCH rather have a guy who's been successful as a major college coach.

Maybe if he could be convinced to have

Assistants with lots of college experience, who can handle the recruiting, and Gruden can be the closer. If a few of them (not all), that could smooth over things with the department, alumni, and help guide Gruden around the block (which Rich didn't have).

Even Weis recruited well

Especially on the offensive side of the ball and he had zero college experience and resembled a beached walrus.  Wannstache did too, and neither of those guys has Gruden's resume.  I don't see Gruden having any problem landing talent.  From just a leader/figurehead standpoint Gruden also seems like a great choice.  He seems to have looked into the college game a lot recently as well and I doubt he'd have any trouble adapting from an X's and O's perspective.

I can't imagine he would have a hard time finding coordinators to come join him (could even keep Magee possibly).  He's also walking into a situation totally set up for success next season if departures are avoided.

Still feels like a pipe dream, but I would be thrilled with the hire.

It's a LOT harder to go from

It's a LOT harder to go from college to the pros than vice versa. He's a widely known name that would bring ferocity and, by my estimate, he'd be an awesome recruiter too. I just don't think that if his old stomping grounds in SFla can't bring him back to the coaching fold, he'll probably not be coming to Michigan.

Does your badass braylon pic make you overconfident?

Why's Gruden not a player? All I've read says he's part of the conversation. Not sure if it makes sense or not but it's a big name that would seemingly require big money and that's what DB wants. Although he also wants a good recruiter and wtf do we know about Gruden and recruiting?

Gruden is not a player dude. He has denied all other college offers. Believe it or not, Michigan is not the best job in the football world. Sorry for being a prick, but come on. I've heard people mention Stoops as well. Hell, why not call Mack Brown while we're at it.

Gruden is inline for the SF job!

He has NFL experience (which they prefer) and word is the 49ers will not match the dolphins offer.  (source inside SF HQ)

Not saying Jim wouldn't take the offer but it's lower than Ross's.  It's day 2 with Ross & Jim holding DB by the balls.  Now back to our regular scheduled programming - what the F#$% are we gonna do now?  Drink...yes, keeeeeeep drink'in.

Gruden is my absolute number

Gruden is my absolute number one choice right now.  The thing that clinches it for me is that about a year ago he considered becoming an assistant at Oregon to learn Chip Kelly's offense -- talk about someone who's willing to adapt.  Tons of experience with pro-style offenses, yet enamored with the spread, and has presided over amazing defenses.  Yes, please.

The first time I ever saw

The first time I ever saw Pelini was at halftime of the Sparty-Nebraska Alamo Bowl back when he was named the interim coach for the bowl game.  He was interviewed at half-tiime, and gave some fuming, spittle-laced rant, which was totally incomprehensible, other than it was clear he thought Nebraska could be playing better, and I think his team was up a few touchdowns at the time.  Duder gets pretty wired.

Cool Story

I met Pelini's daughter at Quickie Burger. She was a UM student the same time I was, so  depending on how old she is, I guess she could still be there which may be a big influence.  I asked her why she went to UM and not Nebraska and she said that her dad wanted her to have a better education than Nebraska could ever offer.  I thought that was cool.

I thought this was a gem:

"Pelini reportedly turned down the Miami (Fla.) job this offseason, which could be an indication he's willing to leave Nebraska."

Talk about rumor mongoring. He turned down another top job, that's an indication that he IS willing to leave nebraska? To me it is an indication of the opposite.

Yeah, plus there's "[s]omeone

Yeah, plus there's "[s]omeone with knowledge of the situation believ[ing] Nebraska coach Bo Pelini will likely entertain the thought of coaching the Wolverines should school athletic director Dave Brandon approach him."  The article has more than the free-association reference to "interest" in the Miami job.

Question is whether this is an attempt to leverage a better deal from Nebraksa now that the school is joining the big ten and, ipso facto, has deeper pockets...

You have to be offered the

You have to be offered the job to turn it down. You generally have to do an interview to receive an offer. If you do an interview, it generally means you are interested in taking another job.

Not to mention that you are basically implying that the only way to have interest in taking another job is to accept it.

Is it that much better?

Barnett won the Big 12 North 4 out of 5 years and it got him fired.  To me Pelini is a great DC and a not-disastrous head coach who inherited some pretty good players from a guy who was a great recruiter and a disastrous head coach.  Not saying he isn't good, but I'm not all that impressed just yet.

Meh, I am sure he is a good coach and all but he is a fatty. /s

Like I said before you don't talk about how you are going to pay top dollar for a coach if he is number one on your list. You send him a singing telegram and a bottle of Riunite and tell him to get his ass to Ann Arbor on the next train.

My first choice would have been to keep RR, but since DB fucked that up, Mullen or Patterson would be great. Maybe even splash the pot and bring in a big time defensive coordinator. Throw money on this mess at all costs because if this happens again in 3 years this program is proper fucked. So go big or go home. God speed Dave Brandon. God speed

How long Mullen and Diaz had worked together? Were they tight, or just working together a short time? Because if he could work for his buddy at an equivalent school, maybe we could pry him away from Texas. (No, I don't think it's likely...but we're all grasping at straws),

Sparano has been recently rumored, although I believe them to be unfounded, to possibly be heading to Michigan to coach the Wolverines.  One of the reasons they say he has been hanging around.  My source doesn’t believe it but stated he didn’t know one way or the other.  He has also been rumored to have interest in UConn as well.

My other source has yet to confirm this information…so stay tuned.

Pure speculation

...and not based on anything other than trying to read the tea leaves of Brandon's press conference.  But actually well-reasoned:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/564983-michigan-coaching-using-ad-dav...

The guy concludes that it's either Miles or Whittingham.  Not putting too much stock in that, but it's worth thinking about.

I can't say I'm the biggest Les Miles fan in the world, but he does have a proven track record of success, albeit one propped up by tactical fumes, grass consumption and Nick Saban's pre-existing program.  Seeing as how we're bailing water from the ship at the moment, I'll take it, as there's a significant chance Miles could get us back to Big 10 competition, though I probably would have preferred giving RR a fourth year had I thought this was the choice.

Whittingham is intriguing.  He also inherited a strong program (from Meyer), but has in some ways improved on what he got.  Again, I'd be happy with this one, though I might have preferred giving RR a fourth year had I thought this was the alternative.  BUT, I'd prefer Whittingham over Miles scheme-wise, and he doesn't have the baggage.  I think he could adapt our offense and add discipline to our defense.

It was discussed on this

It was discussed on this board before that rumor was DB hates Les Miles for the Lloyd Carr remarks as well as some of the other shit he pulled while at Michigan. This was talked about long before the CC talk as well,  if that gives it any more credibility

There's this oldie-but-goodie one of my friends dug up...

So Brandon either was, or by no means was, responsible for Michigan blocking Miles the first time around.  (Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much.)

That article was fascinating

IIRC, Brando was asked if he would form a committee, and he said, "No."  But he said that he would seek advice from trusted persons and named only Lloyd Carr.  Or my head was still buzzing after hearing "we will begin a national search . . . ."

Exactly right.  Brandon is a micro-manager, to say the least.  He had weekly film meetings with RR, was on the sidelines, came through the tunnel with the team, and has now taken on this struggle without a committee.

After two days of agonizing over who the coach will be I've come to accept that if Brady Hoke is our future coach that will be my worst case scenario. However, I will still feel good about the hire because of the money DB will likely spend on coordinators.

Opportunity

I feel right now like JH represents more than our salvation, but fundamentally carries the torch of the Michigan Man. My enthusiasm for him may be enhanced because I was a 13-15 year old kid during his playing years, but those were damn fine years.  Arguably Bo's finest.  It was mostly domination excepting the #1 vs. #2 loss to Iowa and some irritation with Illinois and Minnesota. We beat the buckeyes and lost the Rose Bowl.  I remember toilet paper and being taught an unequivocal yet somehow acceptable hatred for OSU.  For my heart, it was traditional Michigan football.

JH was the hero, the leader.  The local.  The dude went to Tappan, never mind Pioneer!  Both on Stadium Blvd!  He is Ann Arbor.  He is Michigan.  Obviously he hasn't had a lovefest with the program in his adult years, but he, as much as anybody, has a potentially innate and deep connection to our tradition and city that surely still burns somewhere down there.  For me, he holds continuity in his hands.  The Michigan Man meme will not break should he pass on this fairytale opportunity, but my goodness is this ever a chance for it to be strengthened.

Come on JH...we need your miracle!  Remember reviving us from the '84 season?  Do it again!

COME ON PLEEEEASSSSEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

If not, whatever.  Damn.  GO BLUE always!

Your salvation will be in Miami which I view as nothing more than a money grab. The Dolphins are in a loaded division and surrounded by a fan base who could give a shit. Their stadium sucks but it won't be hard to get tickets for family members, which is a perk.

Couple other ideas, continuing discussions

I thought Gruden was insane talk show call in talk, but Purplestuff made such a good case, I've warmed to the idea substantially (even if I think it's about a 0.00001% chance of happening; which I'm sure he agrees on).

Also, at the end of the last one 1201SouthMain has a great plan if we bring in an older coach (say Miles or Hoke) have a Loeffler (or a Bedford) in place as a line of succession so we're not doing this again in 5 years. This doesn't have to be with just those head coaches, but should be a plan with any good coach that we worry is "just a little bit too old". (If our new guy is 42, it doesn't matter).

Brian may revoke my MGoBlog

Brian may revoke my MGoBlog card here but I don't have a lot of trepidation about Brady Hoke. Hoke's major shortcoming appears to be he's not Jim Harbaugh, the sexiest coaching candidate of the year.

He's accomplished two impressive turnarounds, just like Harbaugh. His defensive mindset is badly needed. He's got a GREAT offensive coordinator in Al Borges. He's qualified for a major D-I job. He knows Michigan and respects the program (not arguing for the UM connection per se but somebody who knows what he's getting into, like Bo did.)

Given that JH is not walking through that door, I don't have a problem with Hoke.

Is he a perfect candidate? Absolutely not, he's a risk. I think the anxiety is that he'll be Carr-style, striving for stability and conservatism at the expense of reaching for the top. But there are no perfect candidates, and certainly no slam-dunk successes we can lure to Ann Arbor, so the program is going to have to take some kind of risk in one direction or the other.

Bringing Hoke in to play

Bringing Hoke in to play smash mouth football sets us back another 3 years at best. We are not set up for this and from what Hoke has said in interviews, he isn't changing. We need a blend of some one who runs something similiar to our offense coupled with a solid defensive staff. Sorry I am not jumping off the RR train onto the Hoke train.

His stats don't indicate that he is a smash mouth football guy in the mold of Lloyd. Look at his teams stats last year. Maybe his quarterback didn't have any rushing yards, but they pass the hell out of the ball.

Well, I'd take it further

Lloyd Carr's stats don't indicate he is a smash mouth football guy in the mold of Lloyd.  We threw the ball quite a bit under Carr.  He may have had a conservative attitude, but especially in the latter half of his career we were a better passing team than a rushing team.

Wait a minute, isn't Jim Harbaugh - the guy everybody wants - a "smashmouth" guy? He runs plenty of schemes, but he's not exactly a spread option guy and he hangs his offense's hat on running with power.

With that in mind, I don't see why this is objectionable with Hoke. SDSU's bowl game and Ball State both looked to have plenty of spread elements going on.

I don't know

if Hoke is the answer, but geez, I'm really sick of people talking about him like they know anything. Did you watch any SDSU games this year? I watched about 5 of them b/c my roomate is an alum. The team overacheived and had a real shot at beating every team on the schedule. They came out against TCU and punched them in the mouth for the first few quarters of play. And to address the smash mouth talk...again, if you had watched any of the games, SDSU ran a ton of different offensive looks!

I agree. The more I've read about Hoke, the more I've started warming up to him. Brian seems to think he's a 3 yards and a cloud of dust coach, but in the Bowl game highlights, he seemed to run a decent amount of shot-gun and 5-wide. Last year he had 2 receivers with over 1,200 yards - that's impressive.

The argument isn't that he's conservative

although another offensive shift would be a problem.

It's that there's scant evidence in his past to suggest he's actually a particularly good coach.

He had Ball State ranked in

He had Ball State ranked in the top 25. Thats certainly some evidence. He had a lot of firsts for Ball State.

"During the 2008 season, Hoke led the Cardinals to the most wins in school history, finishing a 12-0 regular season before falling to the Buffalo Bulls in the MAC Championship. The season featured Ball State's first victory over a BCS conference opponent, the school's first appearance in the Top 25 polls, and their first appearance in the BCS standings."

then okay for one year, then very good for one year.

If you wanna hang your hat on that, that's fine, but from here that looks like a bad hire (even if Hoke ends up being great here).

Also SDSU's best year ever

Also SDSU's best year ever (at the the very least since they beat BC in something called the Pasadena Bowl in 1969).

Then again, Hoke's comments in that article that's linked on the front page do him no favors.  Isn't a large part of the "problem" with RR that he failed to adjust his offense to the roster (such as it was) he was given?

But that 'best year ever" included wins over Nicholls State, a 2-10 New Mexico State team, a 4-8 Utah State team, Air Force (a legit win), a 1-11 New Mexico team, a 3-9 Wyoming team, a 3-9 Colorado State team, a 2-10 UNLV team, and an 8-4 Navy team.

I mean, I'm supposed to be impressed by that?

San Diego State played the 91st toughest schedule in the country according to Sagarin.  And that's with TCU, Utah and Air Force on the schedule.

If they hadn't gone 9-4 it would have been a disaster.

Yeah, you can argue

Coaching style, or age, or certainly "we're Michigan, we should be able to do better". But to say he's not a good coach at this point just sounds either ignorant, or like you have you fingers in your ears during a tantrum. I mean, if someone said "Rich only had 3 really good years as a head coach, and was dicky in the rest, how do we know he's a good coach" you'd rightfully shoot that down as stupid.

Because he turned those two teams

Into winners when he was coaching them? Because he's never been fired? Because people who actually know something about football disagree? You can say he's not good enough for the Michigan job. But to say he's not a good coach isn't really in evidence.

Sure it is

When he took over Ball State he went 4-8, 2-9, 4-7, 5-7, 7-6 in his first 5 years. How is that turning a program around? Ball State was 6-6 the year before Hoke took over!  The program was worse in his first 5 years than it was the year before he got there.

And then he had one bad year at SDSU, and then one decent year where he beat a bunch of 3-9 teams, Air Force and Navy.

To say he is a good coach is to hang your hat entirely one season out of 8.

I would say the worry is his

I would say the worry is his quoted inflexability on offense.  I know RR got a lot of heat for not being flexible with the change, but he had one returning starter when he took over.  The new coach will be inhearting 10 returning starters if you count the presumed Hygue/Dorrenstein takeover at tackle.  And when one of the returners in the Big Ten offensive player of the year, inflexability with these skills will spell disaster.

From a purely recruiting standpoint

Whoever the coach is, has about 26 days to put a class together. "Sexy" may not affect his ability to coach, but it will affect his ability to recruit. And if we want to salvage a semi-decent class, we need to grab one of the well known, if not "sexy" coaches

Exactly. That is why it is go big or go home. We need a big name coach who can come in here and catch the recruits eye. Perception is everything and we need to look like a program that is on the up and up. The Hoke hire to me screams status quo and will not win many recruits over even if it gives a couple of 70 year old men a boner because we hired a true Michigan man.

Hiring Hoke means we're settling for mediocrity. Given how the fanbase responded to RR's three years, I can't imagine the uproar if he is the one hired.

I was willing to consider Hoke until DB said he'd open the purse strings.  No way you can hire Hoke if you're willing to pay top 5 salary.

fuck no.  i dont care who the coach is as long as denard stays on board and i feel hoke would be the guy to let him slip through his fingers.  then, when we're 6-6 and 7-5, people crucify hoke and DB for letting denard go.  Plus he thinks the spread is "counter-productive".  FUCK THAT SHIT.

We may need a "sexy" coach but what we also need is a coach that puts a bullseye on MSU and OSU. Beat one or, dare I say it, both those teams and the coach will have a lot of support. As people have said if we can limit defections, we go from very young team in the B1G to one of the older ones.

Not that I watched College

Not that I watched College Football Live today or anything.... but I really want our defense to be based around Mike Martin. This years scheme used him as a crutch, trying to force double teams on him in hopes of compensating for lack of play makers. I would rather make him a huge factor by getting him one on one. I really think that after a year our corners can hold up a lot better by being moved near the line and in theory less time chasing the receivers. I think we can generate a good pass rush with Roh off the edge and Martin one on one, and that would go a long way towards getting Robinson settled in at the deep safety and helping our corners mature. Who can do that? I have no idea, this thread was just vague enough to throw that in there.

4-man Line

This would allow MM to get more single blocking. They just need a space-eating 1-tech DT to absorb some C/G combos. MM would have the other guard, with the tackles having to deal with Roh and RVB on the edges. I can see MM having a Suh-like impact in the middle. This would help our LB's not eat OG's and our secondary by getting pressure on the QB.

Now, where's that 300lb space-eating 1-tech DT...

Aside from Hoke's lack success and experience against

big boy football teams, his record is OK.  His record the last couple of years reminds one of RR in that he has been impressive the last two years, but against weak competition.  I fear a repeat of the last three years and we end up here again.  And this, there are rumors he wants to hire his brother as a coordinator or at least an assistant.  That is a deal breaker and epic fail.  That is equivalent to RR and Tony Gibson.   RR would never fire him because of their friendship.  Hoke would never fire his own brother.  SCARY.

Taking JH out of the mix, leaves me ...empty.  MIles is crazy, Patterson would never leave TCU now that he is in a AQ conference, Peterson would do the post-Boise fail.  I just can't look, wake me when Spring practice starts.

This comparison is just insane

RR teams beat #3 Va Tech, Georgia and Oklahoma (immediately after he left).  And while the Big East wasn't great while Rodriguez was there, it was nowhere near as weak as the competition Hoke has faced at Ball State and SDSU.

The Big East certainly was "near as weak" as the Mountain West was this year.

TCU, Utah, and Air Force certainly would have competed in the Big East and TCU almost certainly would have won it.

Right

and SDSU went 9-4 with its most impressive win over Air Force.

At WVU, in a conference that was still probably stronger top to bottom than the MWC was this year, RR went 9-4, 8-5, 8-4, 11-1, 11-2 and 10-2 with wins over Georgia, Va Tech, Oklahoma, and ranked Pitt, Louisville, Georgia Tech and Rutgers teams.

That's a good argument

For not fetishizing recent success in a wobbly conference.

Rodriguez looked like a great hire back in 2007.  But we know now that a good portion of the credit for WVU's success goes to Jeff Casteel, and some to the weakness of the Big East.  So we should learn from that and not give the head coach candidates all the credit when a good portion probably should go to the coordinator on the other side of the ball, or think that just because so-and-so did a great job there, he'll do one here too.

I think we should prioritize someone who can build the right staff to use what we have and improve what we don't.

Rodriguez WAS a good hire

he didn't just look like a good hire.  He was probably the best hire Michigan could have made at that point in time given who was available.

And it didn't work out.  Which sucks.  Shit happens, and a coaching hire isn't a guarantee, it's just a probability of future success.

Hair splitting

Bit semantic there. My point was, like yours, that you never know who's going to work out because you don't know the variables yet. He was an exciting and reasonable hire, but great?

His record suggested he'd have the same success at Michigan as at WVU, but he couldn't build a defense in 3 years (even an average one), whereas WVU had above-average defenses. That suggests his success at WVU had as much to do with Casteel as RR's offenses. Hindsight is 20-20 and we now know, without Casteel (who almost came, for the record), he wasn't the guy to produce 10 wins in the 3rd year.

Yes there were lots of things out of his control, but he also only won 5 games/season. The guy before him won 9+. So, in retrospect, he wasn't a great hire. A great hire would have won more. Simple as.

Arsenal for This Trip Called Coach Search

And this is what I need for the coach search (Fear and Loathing on the Coach Search Campaign or something like that)...

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers...also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls.

OK, I am throwing an insane idea out here.

Cam Cameron.

On Bo's staff, check.
Head coaching experience, in the Big Ten and NFL, check.
Midwestern ties, check
Was a graduate assistant with Mike Trgovac, for what it's worth.
Works for a Harbaugh, check.

I understand, it's hard to see a successful NFL offensive coordinator being eager to leave that position.  I understand that he was 18-37 at Indiana.  I understand that he was 1-15 as the Dolphins head coach.  But if we're just going for off the wall ideas, is this wholy unfeasible?

Yes

18-37 at Indiana. 1-15 with the Dolphins.

I'd say that's a pretty shitty track record.

Great Idea.

We'll Hire Mike Hart as our head coach, then put Charles Woodson as the defensive coordinator and Desmond Howard as the offensive coordinator.  Tom Brady could be the QB coach, Wheatley the backs coach, Long the line coach, and then we could have Branch be the D-Line Coach, and Woodley to be the Linebackers coach.  All Michigan Men!

I live in San Diego (Brady Hoke warning)

and I'm a diehard Um fan and reader of this blog everyday for three years (just now signing up).  I obviously listen to the SD sports radio to hear the opinions of people regarding Hoke.  I'm not enamored with the guy for all the reasons people have stated but I will say this.  I have never heard anyone out here, a past player, or someone who knows him say anything but great things.

Everyone out here loves the guy and they can not stand the thought of losing him.  They were up in arms today because it was reported he did not buy a house here and only rents demonstrating he never intended to stay long.  I don't like the idea of the dark age Michigan coach yet if he can get an o coordinator that is progressive and d coordinator with a pedigree of succes, then I think he would have a fighting chance.  The players as SDSU love him, everyone says he is a great recruiter, and the praise he gets from past coaching mates is impressive.

Beyond all that, the thing that would prevent me from pulling my hair out were he hired is this: his dream is to be the coach at UM, he has told everyone forever, and anyone who has that much passion for the university and team should get some slack when it comes to lack of experience or age (my humble opinion)

Not trying to be a downer,

Not trying to be a downer, but a lot of Michigan fans really liked RR as did the players. Doesn't mean that it worked out as the head coach.

Point I'm trying to make is that being a likeable guy doesn't really have a correlation with being an effective football coach.

Chuck Heater

I haven't read anyone's thoughts here about Chuck Heater, though I have seen his name brought up elsewhere. I actually think he could be a really good option, given his defensive and recruiting background. He played at Michigan with DB and has a background as an assistant in the midwest (OSU, Wisconsin, and ND). Since he wasn't retained at Florida now that Meyer is gone, I think he could be a great snag.

DB's comments about big money make me think there's a dark horse out there with a lot of collegiate success. Just looking down the list and one name that I haven't heard mentioned as an outside chance is Stoops.

Hoke or Miles

or bust. Here's my thought process for those who care enough to read...

Hoke...Fits the Michigan man persona. Say what you want about his first few years at Ball State but he's proven he can flip a team and win with it. Has established some but not excellent (aka USC like) west coast ties. Fits the role of an up and coming coach. Overlooked by the majority of fans (Bo anyone?)

Miles...Fits the Michigan man persona. Competes year in and year out in what is hands down the best conference for the title. Won a NC (and look who it was against), Has established strong southern ties. And most of all, is just ****ing crazy enough to win with a down and out team like Michigan.

Both of these guys are great candidates. Jim would have fit right in with them but he's done and gone now. Anyone who thinks these guys would be a poor hire are either way too optimistic (or pesimistic?) or just read and agree with whatever Brian posts on the front page..

Fuck Les Miles. You can read

Fuck Les Miles. You can read on the first page why. Also I formed that opinion all on my own. My reason for not wanting Hoke is..... who is he? Prior to a month ago I had not even heard his name. So I am guessing neither have many recruits. So thanks but no thanks. Keep up the original thinking though.

Total Mess

This seemed so simple to me after the Ohio State game.  Try and get JH right away.  If he wouldn't bite, endorse RR for another year and move forward with recruiting.  DB should go back to delivering pizzas.  He  messed this up more than I knew was even possible.

interesting thread to say the least.

so easy to put all the thoughts here.  So JH what is your next move? 5.2 mill lets just say, for 10 years at UM.  Or dare to try your hand at Denver? SF said you can come coach for 4.5 mill per year.

Good thing I had to work this whole week or I would have gone on a huge bender. Some of DB's comments make me think he has something up his sleeve but I just don't know. I want to have faith but it seems like DB is poised to screw this whole thing up worse then Bill Martin. It took ND 15 years after Holtz left to find a coach that will in all likelihood succeed. Will someone please wake me up in 12 years? Thanks.
