Thoughts on Ray Drew, Jernigan, Dawson??

Submitted by Umichmadness on

I was wondering, why does rivals continually put us on these 5* 4* recruits lists, does anybody actually think that we have a shot at the "Bigs" like Ray Drew, Timmy Jernigan, Lamar Dawson, etc.

No. They aren't always up to date. Maybe they haven't "officially" stated that we are out of it in a specific interview, but that doesn't mean we are still being considered.

Dawson was slated to visit, Jernigan had, and Drew was being recruited by Avery Walls before the uncertainty over RR.  With RR being gone the players interest left and DB's timeline didn't help matters.

Now we turn down a four star WR who wants to be a Wolverine and accept a committment from the #104 CB(I'll go with the highest ranking) when we already have three committments and three visits lined up with other CBs who are ranked tremendously higher.  Welcome to Hoke-a-mania.

I would be extremeeeeeely surprised if we landed any of them, but I wouldn't put anything past Hoke and Mattison. Not getting my hopes up at all, however, and it seems like Rivals is just messing with our heads.

True, you're right that you can't underestimate Hoke's influence as a D-Line coach and Mattison's great history in coaching great players, but rivals really needs to be updating more than just the rankings

But Michigan has been mentioned in these players top ten or sometimes top Five favorites. Thats why a'lot of times Rivals mentions Michigan in their favorites or offer list.

They are now considered a long shot, but Coach Hoke and staff have been putting forth a great effort, and will try and end the recruiting season strong

Sam Webb described him this morning as being very relationship-driven.  Now that Rod Smith is gone, Jernigan's recruiter, Sam thinks that M is a long shot...Sam did say that he would call Jernigan, so we'll likely get a more definitive update in the near future.

The commitment lists aren't updated enough, IMO. You will also notice we have players supposedly visiting like Willingham and Anthony Wallace that don't even list us. Wallace has around 25 schools listed and obviously they all aren't getting visits and we are and we still aren't on the list, so I wouldn't worry about it.

As far as the guys you listed, I don't think we have a shot at any of them. Mayyyyybe Jernigan because he wanted to play in a 4-3, but Sam saying that he is big on relationships makes me think that ship has sailed as well. I think with Avery Walls trying to sell Drew to come to Michigan and him not even attending Michigan says something, and Lamar Dawson eliminated us before the CC, IIRC.

As players drop teams here and there, Rivals isn't always quick to update.  Clearly, at one time, we were on the list for most of these guys, but as time and the CC have gone on, we have been trimmed from most of these lists.  TomHV has better updates.

traffic for them in some respect where subscribers either come in to see what the deal is, or more likely non-subscribers click-in from an RSS feed and are tempted to do the free trial to see what the deal is.

Dawson did indeed eliminate us after the CC. Most recent article I saw about him was after his visit to USC (which was recent), he said he eliminated us and Florida. UCF was going to be getting a visit from him.

Sailed, sailed and sailed.  Understand that the leading colleges for each have been developing those recruiting relationships while the M organization has been dismantled and rebuilt.  It puts both parties in a very awkward position, because there is little time before NSD, and it is a big decision for these teens to make.  Maybe Mattison can work some magic, but I wouldn't be counting on it.
