Things that Annoy me that Sports Reporters Do

Submitted by Nick Sparks on
Not even counting the whole, "players on the team are splintered and talking behind his back to the press thing", because I think everyone has identified this as something that's fairly annoying at this point. First off, the whole, "RR's not a Michigan Man/is an outsider" thing. This one is apparently also held by some of our fan-base, but constantly pops up, and always as a credible point, in seemingly every other article written. 1. Bo was from Ohio, Yost from West Virginia, and RR was never a coach under Bo, but his beloved mentor, Don Nelhen, was. 2. I feel dumb, just writing out #1, why, because this is such a ridiculous argument that I feel a little emptier inside just responding to it. The second one that really chafes my willy is that Dantonio is more Bo and Carr-like and is turning State into some traditional powerhouse juggernaut of a team. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but Dantonio is empty shell of Bo and Carr. Sure on the outside the three looked fairly similar, what with all of the talk of conservative offense and discipline and hard work. But where Bo and Carr backed it up with spirit and genuine love and devotion to his team, Dantonio seems more driven by some chip on his shoulder. Of course this makes him a perfect fit for Michigan State, but should result is more glass ceilings, mediocrity, and unexpected outbursts when both the man and the program really feel some pressure. Ok, sorry for the obvious nature of my post. I've just got a ton of excitement built up in me right now and I needed to vent. Last night was like Christmas Eve and I'm giddy this morning and can't wait until 3:30. I know, crazy homerism, but this the year that we silence the doubters and cause fans, coaches, and players of every other team in the nation to emit a collective "oh shit" when they see what we're going to be capable of. Go Blue! PS. For some reason this morning I was reminded of my favorite post from the now defunct Autumn Thunder and wanted to share. I remember how excited I was that Winter of 2007 when we found out who our new coach was: http://autumnthunder.blogspot.com/2007/12/rich-rodrig-yessssssssss.html The worries of the time seem so simple and charming now.

I think the poster means something else. I'm not sure he used the best words to describe it. What I think he MEANT to say (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that Dantonio is driven by an inferiority complex. The guy has a chip on his shoulder but for the wrong reason. I want RR to coach like he has a chip on his shoulder but the last thing I want is a coach he feels the need to consistently bang his chest, talk junk to players and boast dominance over the state. The "empty shell" comment is perfect.

I could have said it better and you hit the nail on the head. I meant that Dantonio has an inferiority complex. I want our players and coaches to be motivated by the desire to improve themselves as much as possible through giving everything they have to each other. I want them to be motivated through every doubt and fear, not by them, but through looking them right in the eye and strengthening themselves physically and mentally and defeating them. Dantonio seems to smile and talk over them. They blind him and you can see traces of it whenever he isn't fully conscious of his words and says something that Lloyd or Bo would never say. It won't be more than 3 years before he cracks.

Did anyone see Desmond and Herbstreit talking about the issue on Gameday? Desmond was the one talking about splintering in the locker room, etcetera. Herbstreit was the one saying how he fully expects Michigan to come out on a mission today and doesn't think there's any behind-the-scenes issues with the players. I'm really beginning to wonder if Desmond wants RichRod out as well? Not saying it's the case, but I'm starting to question a little bit at least.

Bo was a football coach first, and a mentor or men 2nd. Lloyd was a mentor of men first, and a football coach 2nd. Keep in mind that both men were ridiculously good in their 2nd passions, and both passions have many overlapping themes; however, I feel that if given the option, Bo would talk about football theory and Lloyd would talk about Nietzsche. You can't really compare. Edit: Keep in mind, there is always the very real possibility that I'm crazy. Just three and a half hours till game-time!!!!!
