Is there a limit to Medical Redshirts
iirc, Mike Jones took a medical redshirt in 2009. I'm assuming that with a broken leg in the ND game, he will get one this year too. Is that true, or no? I guess I'm curious how much eligibility he has left.
Also, did he just have rotten luck? It seems odd for the same player to have two seasons lost to injury.

Once you take one redshirt (medical or typical freshman redshirt), you have to petition to the NCAA for the medical redshirt that would give you a sixth year. He'd probably have to have yet another season-ending injury in his career to get that sixth year, they don't give them out willy-nilly.

he broke his leg and is out for the season. that would be the "another season-ending injury" to get the 6th year

So to be more clear,
- Has Mike Jones (or the team on Mike's behalf) requested a medical redshirt for 2010?
- Assuming the answer is yes, a 2nd medical redshirt has been requested, has this been granted, or does that happen at the end of the season?

Medicals are applied for at the end of the season.

I could be mistaken, but I believe by "another" he meant a third season ending injury

Especially when it occurs in just the 2nd game of the season

But just because you've had two season-ending injuries doesn't necessarily mean he'd get a second redshirt granted by the NCAA upon petition. Hence my saying if he had yet another one, he'd probably get one. Three season-ending injuries and they'd be pretty likely to give him that extra year.
Probably the most surefire way a guy gets a 6th year is having the same injury keep you out for two seasons. Evan Eschmeyer was an example of this.
But isn't this moot anyways? Our own player bio for Mike Jones says he played in seven games last year, so he should easily get a medical redshirt for this year since he hasn't burned his redshirt yet and was injured before the games played cutoff.. http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jones_mike00.html

You can be granted another. It has to be a season ending injury and you must have played less than 25% of the games (3 or less).

I don't know how that stuff works. Derrick Alexander was lost for the season in 1991 in the first game of the year and he was denied a medical redshirt.

No, he got a medical redshirt that year. He played in 1989 and '90, got the medical redshirt after the injury in '91, and then played the next two years.

I went to the same high school as him, but while he was at UM and his high school coach would complain that he didn't get an extra year of eligibility. I guess he led me astray on that one.

... step into the lobby and say "I'm Mike Jones, don't act like you don't know the name... Ain't nothing changed but my play status, I'm gonna stay the same"

This was back in the early 90's during the Knight era. I can't remember if he had two medical redshirts or if it was a traditional redshirt and medical redshirt.

Nick Saban's MSU teams had a couple. Even then he knew how to game the system.

But it's very, very rare for the NCAA to grant it. I'm not sure how the exact process works, but the NCAA is very stingy granting a 6th year of eligibility to stop programs from having a booster (who is also a doctor) write notes and get kids with "injuries" an extra year of training.

Maybe they can be convinced by x ray evidence. A broken leg is a clear cut injury, unlike something like a sever concussion. I am not downplaying the seriousness of something like a concussion but how do you determine how long someone is out, or when it is safe to play again… it gets a little vague. With a broken bone it’s a little different.

After your fifth year, you can apply for a sixth year of eligibility if you missed two seasons due to injury. The standards for that sixth year are higher than those needed to get the first medical redshirt. In Jones's case, this won't come up for a couple more years.

Thanks for the response that actually answers the question and ends the rest of us from speculating.

Are we sure he got a RS last year? On mgoblue.com he is listed as a sophmore, having played in 7 games last year. Seems to me like this season would be his first redshirt (although it may still have to get cleared w/ the NCAA since he played a couple games this season).

Mike Jones.

But, as stated above, Nick Saban would be the ultimate source of knowledge on this...
(although our records are the same right now...)

Yes except Alabama, of course Saban is the exception to the rule
