Is there a limit to Medical Redshirts

Submitted by StephenRKass on

iirc, Mike Jones took a medical redshirt in 2009. I'm assuming that with a broken leg in the ND game, he will get one this year too. Is that true, or no? I guess I'm curious how much eligibility he has left.

Also, did he just have rotten luck? It seems odd for the same player to have two seasons lost to injury.

Once you take one redshirt (medical or typical freshman redshirt), you have to petition to the NCAA for the medical redshirt that would give you a sixth year.  He'd probably have to have yet another season-ending injury in his career to get that sixth year, they don't give them out willy-nilly.

But just because you've had two season-ending injuries doesn't necessarily mean he'd get a second redshirt granted by the NCAA upon petition.  Hence my saying if he had yet another one, he'd probably get one.  Three season-ending injuries and they'd be pretty likely to give him that extra year.

Probably the most surefire way a guy gets a 6th year is having the same injury keep you out for two seasons.  Evan Eschmeyer was an example of this.

But isn't this moot anyways?  Our own player bio for Mike Jones says he played in seven games last year, so he should easily get a medical redshirt for this year since he hasn't burned his redshirt yet and was injured before the games played cutoff..  http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jones_mike00.html

... step into the lobby and say "I'm Mike Jones, don't act like you don't know the name... Ain't nothing changed but my play status, I'm gonna stay the same"

But it's very, very rare for the NCAA to grant it. I'm not sure how the exact process works, but the NCAA is very stingy granting a 6th year of eligibility to stop programs from having a booster (who is also a doctor) write notes and get kids with "injuries" an extra year of training.

Maybe they can be convinced by x ray evidence.  A broken leg is a clear cut injury, unlike something like a sever concussion.  I am not downplaying the seriousness of something like a concussion but how do you determine how long someone is out, or when it is safe to play again… it gets a little vague.  With a broken bone it’s a little different.

After your fifth year, you can apply for a sixth year of eligibility if you missed two seasons due to injury.  The standards for that sixth year are higher than those needed to get the first medical redshirt.  In Jones's case, this won't come up for a couple more years.

Are we sure he got a RS last year? On mgoblue.com he is listed as a sophmore, having played in 7 games last year. Seems to me like this season would be his first redshirt (although it may still have to get cleared w/ the NCAA since he played a couple games this season).
