There are John Wangler days until the start of Michigan Football 2015.

I still get thrills watching Wangler's Michigan highlights.  Wangs ushered (with a healthy dose of assistance from Anthony Carter) Bo's Michigan Football program into a completely different kind of offense, the pass offense.

In the immortal words of Robert Frost Ufer, "Johhny Wangler-to-Anthony Carter will be heard until another 100 years of Michigan Football have been played!!".  Well, 35 down, 65 years to go...

IMO, he's still one of, if not THE, best pure passers we've ever seen wearing the Maize and Blue.  Bo's Boys got Bo his first Rose Bowl Victory in '81 largely because Wangler broke open a game that was very tight at halftime, finding AC over-and-over-again in the 2nd half.

Quarterback John Wangler opened the game with a 47 yard pass completion to Carter, but 20 yards in penalties took Michigan out of field goal range, giving the Wolverines a preview of events to come. Bryan Virgil booted a 20-yard field goal early in the second quarter and Wangler, hitting receivers at will, threw 53 yards to Carter for a 9-0 lead after Michigan missed the extra point. On the next series, Wangler was tackled by UNC linebacker Lawrence Taylor on a sprint out, suffering a severe knee injury, ending his playing time that night. Up to that point, he had accumulated 203 yards through the air. North Carolina finally scored on a one-yard plunge by Doug Paschal late in the quarter, and trailed 9-7 at the half.

Midway through the third quarter, the Tarheels took control of the game, driving 97 yards in 15 plays behind the running of Amos Lawrence, and scoring on a 12-yard pass from Matt Kupec to Phil Farris. North Carolina added a field goal with 7:31 remaining in the game to move ahead 17-9. However, the Wolverines never gave up, and with 1:28 to go, backup quarterback B.J. Dickey, Wangler's replacement, connected with A.C. on a 30 yard bomb to bring the game to within two. In an attempt to tie, Dickey's pass to Carter in the endzone failed, and Michigan fell short. Hindering the Wolverines throughout the game were two lost fumbles, two pass interceptions, the loss of Wangler and 87 yards in penalties.

Dang.  An amaizing 25 yards per pass attempt w/ Wangler.  Only 7 per attempt w/ Dickey.

If there was a playoff that year I think Michigan would have won it.

We had an unbelievably stifling defense, Georgia won that year beating Pitt in the Sugar Bowl, Herschel Walker was a freshman and a stud but I don't think he woulda had much running room against U-M, if only.....

You know, no Michigan player who has worn #5 has been an All-American to date, at least insofar as I recall. Perhaps there is a #5 on the team right now that can eventually be the first, eh? We shall see as his career here begins in earnest this season.

Sorry, that was a random observation that just struck my caffeine-deprived mind.

Three aint enough man, I need FIVE!!!!

"I happen to love the number 5. its a beautiful number, a glorious number. In fact, I have 5 fingers on each hand. After all, how many toes do you have on each foot? Five. You have a high five, you have a low five!" - Big E Langston
