Theiren Cockran Punishment?

Submitted by Drew_Silver on

What are the steps for Cockran to be suspended by the B1G?

I remember in the RR era the Purdue coach introducing his player who he beleived was suspended because of RR sending in video.

Is that what needs to happen?  Does UofM need to send in the video to get the suspension?

Does the B1G review automatically?

To me it looked like a pretty obvious head shot / leading with your helmet / targeting.

Not sure what the steps are - anyone who can help.  THANKS!

unacceptable that the refs didn't eject him for targeting. they actually should be reprimanded/suspended for their gaffe by the big ten office, but i am sure they won't be

A lineman should have jumped on him and given him the business.  Instead they all look around like lost puppy dogs.

if I recall there were several instances of Utah taking some cheap shots as well

Hoke can't say he is all about toughness when this stuff keeps happening.  I am not saying we should get into a cheap shot contest, but no on seems to be 'afraid' of Michigan or any possible retribution.

Totally agree.

This team is CASTRATED.

I was giving him the "youth" benefit of the doubt up until now. I can only assume now that it's Hoke's BALL-LESS demeanor, NO FIRE, or anger rubbing off on the kids.

His "cool" "collected" insistence has only further castrated this team, which plays with little or no anger whatsoever.

FIrst, we should never be at this point, but we're taking these beatings and impotent play with freaking SMILES ON OUR FACES.

Somebody should be on the sidelines grabbing people's collars, getting in some people's ears.

People wanna get mad at some NFL players because they fly off the cuff (i'm not talking about domestic violence or assualt), but guess what, that's WHY THEY ARE WHERE THEY ARE.

No guts.

Our team has no guts.

Where the FVCK is the fire?

Brady Hoke sure as hell doesn't have it.

This exact attitudeis what perpetuated this whole return to "MANBALL!" nonsense that allowed Hoke, a mediocre coach at best, to ghost in to this team. And the team doesn't need to exhibit any FIRE after or during the play. Guess what? The referee always sees the last incident, not the instigating act. It's not worthwhile to see this team gather unnecessary penalties because the referee sees the Michigan player reacting, not the opposing player who caused the mess.

I want to see this team display their aggression in the actual plays, in ways that won't be constituted as dirty (ala Lewan twisting helmets). If someone lands a cheap shot, flatten them the next play, and lay on them a little while longer. There are smart ways of getting back at dirty players.Michigan is a poor team at the moment. Don't want to see them become a dirty team, also.

Cockran left his feet

He hit helmet to helmet

his arms were at his sides - he made no attempt to wrap up or make a 'football' play

he was trying to hit morris in the head with his helmet.  pretty cut and dry to me.  If he had is arms out to his sides maybe I could see your point, but it looked pretty bad on TV.

Michigan's QBs are constantly absorbing cheapshots with none of the other 10 guys on the field in Blue doing a thing.

What happened to toughness? Hoke is such a fraud.

The last 2-3 games against MSU, our QBs (Robinson and Gardner) have received late hits ON NEARLY EVERY PLAY.

I was screaming at my TV at the refs and our O-lineman (of course, he was legally destroyed as well), yet nothing happened. They can't hear me through my TV apparently.

Go watch the 2013 footage, it was late hit after late hit, the only reason, it seems, that they didn't call it, was because it happened with such regularity, that it didn't seem out of place.

And this is not a new thing that our QB is REGULARLY hung out to dry, and no one is getting in anyone's face about it.

No guts.

It just shows no guts. No awareness. Just a calm, taking it. Just like Hoke after a loss or a win. No energy. No anger. Just calm.

The problem is football is a game of "control" and "anger", you can't just have one, you will fail. To anyone who's never lined up at the high-school level or above, I'm sorry, but it will be hard to understand that. You have to be there.

Michigan players used to taunt, and chirp at one another, just like they do in the NHL, nothing major, nothing retaliatory, just toeing the line.

Peppers is the only one I ever see doing it. Toussaint used to and so did Robinson. But if you look at 97' footage or even the Braylon Edwards/Mike Hart/Henne era, they did that as well.

There needs to be some energy here.

Peppers can't be the only guy. Oh yea, and Norfleet definitely chirps as well, but he's freaking 167 lbs, he can't be the only guy.

who were appalled when Lewan grabbed a guys face mask in the pile or shoved Tom's face into the turf? Do we think Lewan was doing that because he was a thug? I agree it would be nice if someone got up in that dudes face and yelled at him, but Hoke has coached his guys not to do anything that may incur a penalty - and he himself doesn't go all Bo on the refs (never mind that he doesn't have a headset to throw).

Coaches say in press conferences all the time that their teams have submitted video to the conference to be looked at.

In conclusion, ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

If your going to have the targeting rule in the book that's a play you have to call it on. He launched directly at Morris's head with his own. He needs to miss a game. If I remember correctly suspensions don't get announced until Thursday or Friday. So we will have to wait a while until we find out what will happen there.

Yeah, Michigan would have a case, I think, if they submitted the video. Evne by the rules, it seems fairly clear that this is what Cockran was doing. From Rule 9, Page FR-88...

Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:

• Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make contact in the head or neck area

• A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground

• Leading with helmet, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with contact at the head or neck area

• Lowering the head before attacking by initiating contact with the crown of the helmet

How in the hell you don't defend your quarterback, your leader, your teammate, is fucking beyond me. That pissed me off almost as much as Hoke mishandling the situation. You don't let your guy take a shot and then do nothing.

This is what happens when you want a Michigan Man and Brandon thinks "Michelin Man" is the same thing.

P.S. Stop calling him a good guy, he dosen't care aboout player safety and never has as long as he's been the H.C. of this team. A team that has lost all faith in his ass.  Fire him now, do the players a favor.

As much as this pains me to admit, after re-watching that play a few more times, that was a legal hit.  Millen immediately went apeshit which clouded my own objectivity but he hit him in the chest with his shoulder.  Maybe it was a fraction late but Morris needs to be a big boy if he wants to QB in the Big Ten conference.

There was at least one other cheap shot on Morris.  On a play where he took off, ran and slid, he was pounced on by a Gopher defender way after he was down.  No call.  Not that it would have made a difference but it would help if the officials protected QB's from thuggery.

I might have this wrong, but isn't this the same guy that hit Morris after he slide? On that one, it looked to me he lowered his shoulder after the slide. It didn't appear to be just incidental contact because the guy couldn't stop (which is why I assume the refs didn't flag it)

I've only seen it once and maybe I'll change my mind when I watch the game again, but what I saw was:

The guy pulled out of the hit and swerved slightly left when he saw Morris go into his slide...which turned out to be a pop-up slide, and Morris came back up right where the guy had swerved to.

If Morris had stayed down there would have been no contact, and the defender has no reason to expect him to pop back up.

The others were legitimate penalties (including the one the announcers didn't like, where the guy put his hands up and pretended to pull up just after he went through with the hit) but I thought this one was a good no-call.

I was livid when that happened, at the game.  Morris went into his slide, finished his slide, and was doing nothing but basically lying there when he got nailed in the shoulder.  The Minnesota player has no business running at Morris in any event, much less making contact.  Look at it this way:

-it is illegal to hit a sliding QB (that is the point of sliding)

-it is illegal to hit a player after the whistle has blown

-hitting a lsiding QB after the whistle is two wrongs, and not the kind that make a right.

awful in both the last two weeks.  In the Utah game they used the marker on the West sideline to determine a first down, those arent the official yard sticks.  Brady was standing right there and let it slide.  But man, you've got to know which marker is the official one.

In making a case that the shot was blatantly cheap and dangerous, Hoke would underline his and his staff's own culpability in not removing Morris and/or having him checked out.

What a mess.

I agree Cockran should be called out, even if a penalty is unlikely, if only to serve warning that he needs to watch his dangerous play (intent is hard to prove, but I do think it was a deliberate cheap shot).

But the most effective protest would be in the form of the next Michigan coach making it a point prior to next year's Gopher game, then leading a clean but crushing restoration of normal Brown Jug service.  Cockran's a junior, so should be back for some garbage time double and triple teams.
