Thanksgiving Traditions

Submitted by Cranky Dave on

Another Thanksgiving thread, this one to ask what Thanksgiving traditions you have with your family, beyond turkey and watching the Lions. The only one we have is my wife making a mean pumpkin cheesecake, but I feel like others must have something more special than that.

My family gathers to refresh our memory as to how much we all really dislike one another, while pretending to have profoundly missed seeing one another throughout the rest of the year.  Then everyone gets liqored up, at which point I find an out of the way place to sit and wait for the truth syrum to cause a good dust up....usually between two sisters.

That is way better watching than any Lions game.

I use to eat a lot and drink a lot of alcohol.  In college we use to play a big tackle football game without pads. One year I was sore from hard hits for nearly 2 weeks.

Last few years has involved flying up to Ann Arbor, having Thanksgiving here and staying a few nights to go to the OSU game.

We're good for at least one more when my brother is a senior in a few years, so I'm hoping we keep the tradition alive well after that.

...am I the only one here who largely forgoes football on Thanksgiving (at least for a while, until we leave to go to visit family) and instead watches the annual MST3K Turkey Day Marathon?

We never eat turkey. Usually beef, lamb or short ribs. But we start eating appetizers at noon and don't quit until we eat dinner at at 7, after which none of us can move except for mom who refuses to eat until she's sick. I mean bacon-wrapped shrimp, giant cheese and olive plates... so good.

We actually like each other (or I am oblivious). Share stories of things going on in each other's lives. Everyone helps with dinner or clean up.

Anyone else much prefer leftovers?

Have had several different Midwestern, California iterations. Nothing, after age 17, has remained constant. The thing I have going now is that I bring wines for my inlaws' dinner. This year an Alban Syrah was the headline.
