Thanksgiving Traditions

Submitted by Cranky Dave on

Another Thanksgiving thread, this one to ask what Thanksgiving traditions you have with your family, beyond turkey and watching the Lions. The only one we have is my wife making a mean pumpkin cheesecake, but I feel like others must have something more special than that.

and watching the Lions lose.

Stuffing is almost done.  Everything else is prepped (turkey is brining, about to fish it out, sweet potatoes and green beens ready, yukon gold potatoes ready, crabcakes ready).

Does anyone have recipes for two boneless chicken breasts to be done on a gas grill?  I never got my oven fixed when I said I was going to and people are coming over in a few hours.  Wife is mad.

I usually just marinate for an hour or so then toss on the grill.  Italian salad dressing works well, or soy sauce with some sugar, garlic, pepper, and maybe a bit of ginger.  The salt in the marinade has the same effect as brining and helps keep the chicken moist as long as you don't overcook it.

My family gathers around the trash can in the alley behind my house, and we smoke a bunch of meth. Kids are 13 and 10 this year so we've decided that they are old enough to partake.

My MSU fan uncle will come over later and say that the manufacturers of my clothing, or whatever M object is around, screwed up and used the wrong letter and color pattern. He will then proceed to reenact and old wrestling move as he reaches for a spot behind my knee to take me down. I won't budge and will push him away. I will then watch as everyone destroys him in backgammon. After he will decide to switch to euchre. And will lose in that. All while eating, drinking and staying full

that the Turkey Day game was blacked out on TV, so the Dallas game was usually all that we saw.

My stepdad took us to the horrific 1979 Turkey Day game between the Lions and the Bears...the fans behind us were alternately chanting "Charles White" and "Billy Sims"...for once, the Lions made the correct choice.

(OK, my memory is f'ed up here...the Lions actually won the game but I still remember the game as being awful...I guess that's why God invented Wikipedia!)

When I was in Peace Corps half way across the world, I started a Euchre craze among the other volunteers. I think only one or two had even heard of the game. I imagine them spreading the gospel across the country now, but they probably just play Candy Crush on their phones.

mama and all the kids (and the dog).   we came upon two folks on horses this a.m. though and nearly spooked them into a bucking frenzy.  oops.  we turned back toward the house and headed home.
