Thank you God for Coach Rod

As I am sitting here and watching the Cincinnati/Rutgers game, I am reminded of the rumors that were swirling before Rodriguez was hired a couple of years ago. Schiano was one of them for a while, and I'm sorry, but I have never been convinced of this guy's ability to coach. He would be and is great for a place like Rutgers, but can you imagine him coaching at Michigan? And then there were the rumors about Kirk Ferentz. I had a buddy who was excited about that opportunity, but for me, no thank you. He is doing great at Iowa, but he is not a Michigan head coach. In spite of all the journalist-driven allegations this past week, I have to sit here and be thankful we got the coach we did. The guy is a winner. I've got nothing against Schiano and Ferentz and others like them, but I'm just glad they're not dressed in the maize and blue.

I love Coach Rod and think Michigan absolutely made the right decision by hiring him, but at the time I was definitely in favor of Brian Kelly. I live near GVSU and have always known what the guy was capable of. They're both great coaches for sure.

I liked the idea of Brian Kelly, too, but I've since heard a lot of rumors about him not being the cleanest of coaches. Nothing concrete by any means, but considering how the national media handled last week's Situation and all of that, I'd just as soon not have any more aspersions cast on the program.

I'm just glad I cant sit in my endzone seats and NOT know exactly what play is called and where the ball is going based on alignment and splits in the OL. Maybe I will be saying the same thing in seven or eight years if RR never develops a new play again but somehow I doubt that will happen.

The press and other school fans blow everything out of proportion when it comes to RR out of fear. An innovator of his caliber with the ability to recruit nationally is quite a disturbing thought. I cant wait for the years to come...

but during the search I really was interested in Kelly, in spite of the "baggage" from his stint at CMU. I expect him to be snatched up by one of the major BCS programs eventually. I really hope it's not some B10 school. I could see Illinois going after him if they have another lousy year or two under Zook, but they're not a major power; Cincy might be just as good a spot for Kelly.

Tressel was OSU's third or fourth choice; Schembechler was not Don Canham's first choice either. I'm really happy Schiano turned Sailboat Bill down.

It would suck if he ends up at OSU in a few years. He would not underachieve the way Tressel has done with all the talent they bring in. What he has done in Cincy so far is remarkable I would say. I kind of wanted Tennessee to get him this past off-season, just to keep him away from the Irish or other Big 10 teams.

7-1 vs. Michigan

Just because he lost in two national title games does not mean he has underachieved. Tressel is the most successful coach in the BCS era not named Carrol or Meyer.

I hate to admit it (though it's a little easier after the Buckeyes back RichRod up last week), but Tressel has had some pretty impressive success. OSU is a perpetual top-10 team, and they have apparently beaten Michigan several times in recent years. I can't confirm this, however, as I have erased that part of my brain.

Tressel's inability to win the last two national championship games pales in comparison to John Cooper's perennial late-season flop.

In my opinion he is very similar to Mack Brown, their programs can attract so much talent that it's hard not to have a good record. Only fat Charlie can mess something like that up. It's unfair to say Tressel has underchieved -- yet. Tressel has a national championship, which most good coaches never get, and has pretty much dominated the Big Ten since he took over OSU football in 2001. At the same time, Tressel's success to date has been inextricably linked to his ability to beat Michigan, and except for 2006, Michigan has not performed at its best over the past eight years. If OSU loses to Michigan in even half of those games, Tressel's performance would be about the same as Lloyd Carr's during his first eight years.

Tressel's OSU legacy will depend as much on how he does in the next eight years as it will on how he has done up to now. If he continues to dominate the Big Ten with one or two loss seasons, he will eventually win another national championship and his legendary status will be confirmed. If he doesn't, then many will say his best years were his first years and the big games OSU failed to win -- FL, Texas (2 out of 3), LSU and USC (probably twice) -- will stand as important markers OSU fans will point to when considering whether Tressel underachieved.

Reciving slight intrest from GVSU in high school, then going to central I have followed Coach Kellys carrer for awhile now. I was all for us bringing him in,glad we got RR though, and my biggest fear is him at a Big Ten school or ND. He would make any Big Ten school a contender, Indiana excluded. But if he ever ends up at osu, penn state or nd I may get a bit worried. If he can recruit nationally and get elite talent, watch out. I really hope he ends up in the sec, pac-10, stays at cincy, pretty much anywhere but the bigten.

Coach Rod was a winner at WVU, and he'll be a winner at Michigan - no doubt about that. Watching the game Saturday, seeing how he spread the field with tons of playmakers and mixed up the playcalling, all I could say was WOW. I would hate to be a DC trying to gameplan against this offense.

On a side note: What are the odds Brian Kelly stays at Cincy much longer? He's a great coach. I remember watching him at GVSU, winning DII national championships year after year. Let's hope Weis keeps his job at ND because I would hate seeing Kelly in South Bend.

when suddenly Coach Rod talk popped up, and then it was a done deal. I remember being on a vacation in 2002 in a hotel room watching West Virginia play Miami in a night game at Morgantown. It was the first time I had paid attention to Coach Rodriguez, I wondered what/how a Mexican dude would/could get a stint in By-God West Virginia. I remember WVU got beat but I also remember being intrigued by the offense they ran and I wondered how something like that would look like at Michigan and...maybe it was the Mexican thing but that moment just stuck with me...and now, here he is! I never would of anticipated it...
