I think this can be somewhat motivating. He could have said, "we think we're better and we're going to go balls out on saturday to prove it." the absolution of the statement without even playing the game yet gets me a little fired up. as it were, it's psu and motivation need not be manufactured, i'm sure it's inherently abundant in practice this week and on the field saturday.

a very important game for UM (not that the others are not). Its a good tone setter for the remainder of the season. If this serves as additional motivation then so be it. The way Purdue played against OSU our remaining schedule looks that much more tough - we need to win the home games.

What? How do you figure that? Because Purdue may be more difficult after winning there second game (every dog has its day) or because OSU looks easier because of that game. By the way did you know Wisconsin just lost their leading tackler for the rest of the year. Or that their is a good chance Molk will be back at center this week and if not then next week. Tate just said he feels that he's back to 100%. Most of injured players had a bye last week to get healthy. Yet our schedule now looks that much more tough. If you say so.

If Michigan needs Evan Royster to get motivated, then perhaps the players should think about badminton scholarships instead. I agree with the first response: What the FUCK should he say? On paper, they ARE the better team. By far. Besides, players should be free to do a lil jawing back and forth leading up to these games. Makes 'em more interesting.

I read the subject line too quickly and thought it said: "Oh For Crying Out Lloyd," which should be the new phrase used for whenever someone goes all Rick Leach and blames Lloyd for all the program's current (fake) drama reported by the media.

I think it will fire up the team, but seriously? If you don't think you are better, then why play? It's not like he guaranteed a win against us.

Royster's quote - Barely bulletin board material. The headline as usual is meant to stir things up.
"I think we feel like we're the better team and we can go out there and still beat them,"
Graham's quote - a few notches above Royster's on the Ole' Smack Talk Scale
"He's just going to have to show it," Graham said. "We're going to come. They better come hard, because we're coming. "I just don't think they really know how much preparation how much we've been waiting for this game since last year. If he feels pretty confident, he'd better prepare, that's all I can say. We had them last year; we just didn't finish the game."
I find it hard to believe that these quotes would do any extra firing up for this game. This wasn't even close to the Oregon v. Boise State bulletin board material.
"It's definitely getting a lot more intense," senior running back LeGarrette Blount said. "Our practices are becoming a lot faster just because of the anticipation of Boise, the fact that everybody wants to get back at Boise from last year when they stole one from us." "We owe that team an ass-whuppin."
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksbeat/2009/08/oregonboise_state_du… Or even close to some of the shit from Woodson v. David Boston
Boston - "I think Ohio State should be two- or three-touchdown favorites." Woodson - "I was surprised (Boston) made those comments so early. But he'll have to see me on Saturday."

i would have preferred that he said "i think we feel like we're the better team but we might not be also because this is just how i THINK that we FEEL, and i'm not all that in touch with our collective team feelings and besides, we all know how fleeting emotions are. but i think we can go out there and still beat them. or maybe they'll beat us. but at least one team will beat a team. i think we feel that way." try putting THAT on a bulletin board.

PSU is a big time program, and one of the top teams in the Big Ten. They aren't our "natural rivals" but this is a as red as a game gets without it being a "Red letter" game. It isn't some off the wall quote that staggers the mind with it's arrogance but if I was one of the guys, I would find it a little motivating. I think "the better team" is a big time thought, especially with the upper echelon teams.

However, don't you think the coaches won't be playing this up? You don't think they'll be saying all week, "They don't respect you. They think they're better than you. They think this is going to be just like last year." In context, the actual Royster quotes aren't bulletin board material. And I'm sure the players don't need the quotes to be motivated; after all, they were already hyped going up the tunnel after the DSU game. However, if the coaches spin it well, it can add fuel to the fire, and if I were coaching this week, I would be using anything and everything to get the most out of my team.

Personally, I think it's a stupid move on Royster's part. Look at the way Michigan State played us. I believe the only reason we didn't absolutely paste them was motivation. They were talking constantly about disrespect but I agree it can be a powerful motivator. Royster should have just kept his mouth shut; he has nothing to gain by making statements like that.
