Texas QB Commit Zach Gentry visiting this weekend

Submitted by Moe on

This is a HUGE deal to get Zach Gentry on campus this weekend.  Kid has been a Texas commit for awhile, and even with Alabama trying to get him, still stayed true to his Texas commit.

The rule under Harbaugh will be competition.

I like it.  Hopefully it translates not only to recruits at the same position, but also starz vs. performance.

Count me in.

Murray is a great athlete with limited size, but is pretty much a top 30 player and composite 5-star on 247. He's currently committed to aTm, but is visiting Texas and there are rumors that he will make that switch.

This seems like a backup plan for Gentry in the event Murray ends up at Texas. So look to Murray to be the first domino one way or the other.

There is avoiding competition and doing what is smart for your future. Murray is currently a significantly better athlete (he could be a really good CB/WR recruit) and a better thrower than Gantry is, against significantly better high school competition. Gantry is much more of a project as well.

I know we're all aboard the Harbaugh train, but that doesn't mean that there aren't other factors involved. It would be very, very unlikely for Gentry to beat out Murray. He may also not like the fact that Texas is so interested in having Murray join the class, and may feel a bit slighted that it is happening at this point (this is different than being swooned by a coach that already has a QB in the fold). None of that means Gentry is afraid of competition per se, but he may simply be interested in going where he feels he has a better chance to see the field. Harbaugh and Michigan would be a good option to do just that.

I'm not saying that Gentry is looking around only because of Murray. I'm not saying Gentry isn't legit interested in what Harbaugh and Michigan has to offer. But it's certainly another aspect of this story and one that seems like it probably isn't just a coincidence in timing.

FWIW, here's Murray's highlight if you wish to look at it

I hope he commits, is excellent and that Malzone is even better.  Gotta root for the kid who's been (as the kids say) "keepin' it 100" throughout the entire process.

After the 2027 game in Austin all the longhorn players will say "I remember exactly where I was in elementary school when Zach Gentry flipped to Michigan and I have used that moment for inspiration ever since."

Getting him here on campus is a big deal.

The way I look at it, with a lot of these top recruits, what's most important right now isn't necessarily getting them to commit, but getting them on campus, getting them talking about Michigan, and seeing what Harbaugh has to offer. That trickles down to every subsequent class. We could still very likely end up with a lot of 3* guys this year, and that's fine, but a lot of recruiting is taking the time to build up the relationships now. You probably receive little in the way of immediate benefits, but you reap long-term rewards.

Especially if the on-field play improves.

This is big.  I am really impressed with this kid and think his combination of mobility + accuracy separates him from our other QBs.  Obviously, he's tall but I don't think that's the most important factor.  His mobility seems to fit the Luck/Kaepernick mold.  I'd be thrilled to have him join the class.
