for not saying "duel" threat

for not saying "duel" threat
I suppose it's possible that he has a six shooter since he's from TX.
I'll Drink to having texas as a pipeline again... later pahokee
I'll drink to more than that.
... is my radar off, or are you suggesting we drop our Pahokee pipeline? (?!?!?)
Considering Odoms is one of my favorite players on the team (his tenacity and blocking for a WR reminds me of Hines Ward), dropping a Pahokee pipeline... that is just unfathomable, so I'll assume you mean you'll drink later to having a Pahokee pipeline, yes?
While I am psyched for any inroads into places like Texas, Ohio or Cali (especially Texas), I don't see why re-establishing these pipelines means that we have to give up on places like Pahokee. If we are a truly national team, then we should be able to draw from all areas.
I assume that our Pahokee pipeline was RR (or his staff) generated, so it might not be as strong. But, Hoke and Co should be able to maintain it to some extent with guys like Odoms, etc.
too bad if we did.
... is from Pahokee and is in last year's class.
Is there someone at Pahokee we should be recruiting?
Are we making a conscious effort to stay out of Pahokee?
I am confuzzled by your statement.
Im not trying to bash on pahokee and yes i love odoms too but it just seems like those guys don't do well in cold weather. Odoms can remind you of ward but I just don't think hes the same talent. Pahokee is a great place for football I just don't see allot of those kind of styles fitting into our pro style scheme in a few years. Maybe a fast little db or slot reciever. I don't think the Vincent smiths and the martavious odoms of the world our going to be the guys this staff is after. i could be wrong but I would like to think were going country strong then rabbit chasing fast. Please don't hate me for it but FL wasn't a main pipeline when hoke was on the staff to begin with and i know somebody will list off 5 or 6 guys for me and make me look stupid but if i remember correctly allot of the talent was midwest texas and california??? am i right? I would like to see those states be our bread and butter again but thats my wish list.
I'm in agreement with michgoblue. Texas, Cali, Ohio, Florida, Mars, any pipeline with schools that produde D1 talent is great with me. But I've loved watching the Pahokee kids play. And Odoms may fit into Hoke's style better than you/I think - Steve Smith is small(ish) and does just fine as an outside receiver in a pro-set offense. (/man-crush on Odoms.) And of course Pahokee has some bigger dudes, as Ash (DT) demonstrates...
Anyway, we can agree to disagree, but it's a non-issue since I'm sure all we really care about is that we want the men who we recruit to be thrilled to be attending Michigan. Our current team, who I think is expressing an amazing amount of solidarity, is showing that, as are our current recruits. (As am I, since I am originally from California and am thrilled to be here. Ha, it's just too bad I'm not a D-1 athlete, or else I'd recruit like Miller/Hayes and help to develop a Cali pipeline!).
You know who else is fast and from Florida? Denard. Also saying Odoms can't play in cold weather is dumb considering he got injured in early October and didn't get a chance to play again until the bowl game where he caught one of our two TDs. I'll accept the fact that you can have a dislike for smaller players, but I don't think it was the weather that ever hindered them.
not saying I don't agree cause Odoms is also one of my favorite players...but the bowl game was in FL and it was like 75 outside.
he can be the captain of a club team in shooting sports.
Although, if a "Duel Threat" QB can break the huddle, pace to midfield, turn and shoot.... I'll take one please.
According to Rivals.com this guy is on campus right now (Monday).
is deeply offended.
I hear he's looking for work.
Jesus Christ that's a pretty face.
Hoke's turn to snake oil a guy away from Purdue?
i wonder what Danny Hope would say this time. Of course, he has to be worried about Hoke clothes-lining him at midfield after we beat them.
Followed by the big legdrop
I hope Bellomy stays with Roundtree while he's on campus.
I was at the Purdue game this past season and Roundtree is right, it's just kind of boring there.
to snake oil at least one recruit away from Purdue every year.
I agree but Drew Brees, Kyle Orton, and Dustin Keller say what's up. You can add Kerrigan to that list after this year too. Purdue produced some OL in the NFL but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
I find this interesting because it may mean that our offense continues to implement a dual threat QB in the future. Maybe the offense being adapted to fit Denard and also Devin isn't a passing phase on our way to a pro style offense. I may be reading too much into this but it is worth a thought none the less.
Or should I say wishing upon a star that this is the case.
Bellomy is listed at 6'3" on Rivals.
BTW, he is also listed as having a GPA above 4.
There are several kids already in this class with great grades.
Or, are you trying to imply something?
If anything, meant to imply that a Michigan offer might be more attractive to a kid with great grades. The football history and the academics are a tough combination to beat.
In general a UM degree is going to be more "prestigious" than one from Purdue, but if he's interested in engineering, most engine school rankings I've seen put Purdue just behind Michigan. USNWR, FWIW, slots UM at #7 with PU at #8.
Smart QBs are always good. I like his height and the fact that he can run. He's got a really good TD-to-INT ratio, too.
To your point on "smart" QBs. The NFL combine gives the Wonderlic test to all attendees as does my company BTW. We use a baseline of 22 (out of 50) as a cutoff for potential employment. Here are some interesting Wonderlic notes:
1. QBs and Kickers consistently score the highest (average score over 30)
2. Defensive lineman score the lowest (average score of 16)
Here are snippits from an SI article on the topic:
Teams aren't supposed to release the scores, but they're usually leaked anyway. Among quarterbacks Brian Griese is said to have scored a 39, Drew Bledsoe 37, Steve Young 33, John Elway 30, Troy Aikman 29, Cade McNown 28, Mark Brunell 22, Tim Couch 22, Trent Dilfer 22, Brett Favre 22, Daunte Culpepper 21, Vinny Testaverde 18, Dan Marino 16, Randall Cunningham 15 and Jeff George 10. Kicker Sebastian Janikowski reportedly got a 9, though he offered $500 to the test proctor to give him a 10. (Kidding.) This year Florida quarterback Jesse Palmer is said to have scored a 32, and TCU star running back LaDainian Tomlinson only had a 13. Anytime your Wonderlic approaches your cleat size, it's not good.
Trust me...they are VERY accurate.
But as Tomlinson's NFL success shows, Wonderlic performance is not necessarily correlated with pro success at all positions - just the more cerebral ones, like QB and maybe OL.
And clearly Palmer's score translated directly to his work behind the microphone.
Jeff George scoring 10 sounds about right. The guy was probably as bad reading books as he was reading defenses.
What a dumb ass he was. I loved reading Bo's story (from Bo's Lasting Lessons) about recruting him in high school. He shows up with an assistant coach at George's family home and Jeffo is dressed like a slob. He's slouching on his couch and demands his mother to bring him a can of pop, and Bo's basically seen enough by that point. He thanks them politely and leaves w/o offering a scholly.
about recruits with good grades. We have had plenty of student-athletes either DQ'd or on the verge of DQ over the years. Does the name Dorsey ring a bell? I'll take all the "good grades" news I can get.
After watching his highlights, he seems to be a decent prospect at the QB position. He makes good decisions, has good touch and accuracy, and he has a little speed. He definitely can run the zone read but we might phase that out of our new offense. The fact that he is intelligent is also a plus. We need a body at the QB position and I would definitely take him in this class if he willing to consider us.
Added benefit to get the APR up.
Definitely has the grades to make it into Michigan. Would qualify at Vandy as well.
I think that is the appropriate direction to take the program at tis point.
I noticed the other day that one of the top Pro-style QBs (Reilly O'Toole) is committed to Illinois? What the ? This perplexes me.
The Zooker is one hell of a recruiter ... bad coach .. but awesome recruiter
Really not the same. I agree that Les is a better recruiter than coach, but he's won a lot of games in a very tough conference. He's beaten top teams like Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas over multiple years. He's also been very good in bowl games.
Zook, on the other hand, has had one good year in C-U, that ended with getting embarassed in the Rose Bowl. Other than that, Zook has missed a bowl a few times, barely made a bowl a few times, and been embarassed by middle of the road Big Ten teams. He has very, very few big wins.
I dont understand why people bash Miles as a coach. Are his ethics questionable? Sure. But all the guy does is win games no matter how ugly the wins may be, but to insinuate that the guy isn't a very good coach is ridiculous.
His clock management gaffes and throw caution to the wind 4th down gambles (including the "holder-tosses-it-over-his-head-to-the-175 lb-kicker" plays) get a lot of attention, but hard to argue with his track record. The guy can coach. Saban got it going there, and Miles has done a pretty good job with stewardship. 2011 could be big for them.
Man, that is an unfortunate name. Good thing that kid is a good athlete, but he probably still got made fun of. O'toole? Too easy.
Naming him Reilly doesn't help much either. How about a stronger first name? Like Bonecrusher. Name your kid Bonecrusher O'Toole and no one makes fun of him. BKFinest it.
is a great recruiter. He's not so good with the coaching, but the man can recruit.
I saw that too... all i can think is that he must of grew up loving the illini or he just loved the campus.
He's an Illinois kid and doesn't have that many other impressive offers. He's also been committed for quite a while (since late June), so he may have been more "under-the-radar" before his senior season (pure speculation).
Rivals is much higher on him than Scout, FWIW.
I saw one of his games on ESPN this year. Looks pretty good, I think he's from the area if I remember correctly.
If I'm reading that right, it says he has only shown verbal interest in Purdue? Would this be Hoke's first Snake Oiling of Hope?
Which is a good thing.
I must say, I despise Danny Hope more than any other Big Ten coach outside of Dantonio. Between Dantonio's lack of punishment for his gang of convicts and Hope's ridiculous (and incorrect) vendetta against RR, they top my list. It's funny, I never thought I'd even have an opinion about a Purdue coach after growing up most of my life knowing Joe Tiller.
Tressel, while I hate OSU, I have a decent amount of respect for because of his accomplishments.
Hope and Dantonio = hypocritical douches.
Hope seems to forget after a year or two that 9/10 times we'd crush them in three quarters and use the rest of the game to get backups some playing time. Can't wait to see the look on his face in a few months when Denard gets benched halfway through the third quarter because it isn't worth risking him with a 25+ point lead.
What ever happened to him?
Please tell me you're kidding
an update on RoJo too while we are at it..................
I thought they had gone down there to talk to all of the Glenville guys. I had not heard that he was not as intelligent as some of the other recruits. He has the size though.
Doesnt qualify Academically to play a Michigan.
I believe he has some academic issues to work out.
in one of the multiple caves in Tora Bora? Let me know if you have and I'll withold my -1 vote I am ready to give you.
Thanks for the link. That was really impressive. Nice touch on his passing, very decisive and quick when running the ball. Seems like a perfect fit for this class.
Anyone know about the competition level he was facing in those videos?
Black & Yellow

Its not snake oil anymore Danny, its called Hokeus Pokeus! And btw Roy Roundtree says your school is boring
*EDIT* Taylor Lewan also called and said your mustache sucks and his is way better
The kid plays for the Oakland Raiders?
Looking on Rivals I noticed that his school produced quite a few prospects this year including an ATH that is going to Oklahoma and a LB that's going to TCU. It's always wonderful to have solid relationships with Texas high schools.
Also at the 1:00 mark in these highlights, The WR broke a couple tackles and had a nice spin move. I wonder what his deal is even though we aren't taking a WR in this class.
Looks like a guy who been shown regional interest, but not a lot more than that. Most of the schools that have offered him are smaller i.e. the Tulsa's and UTEP's of the world. He did get an offer from Oklahoma State though. And he runs a 4.5 40yd.
Too bad WR's are not on the map this year.
He has pretty good footwork for a supposidly "dual threat" QB. He looks more like a QB that can run than some of the running backs who can occasionally throw that are usually in the "dual threat" category. I like his size, too. Was he on SDSU radar or is he someone that was on UofM's radar with RR but wasn't interested?
Thanks for the link - the kid is good!
Did you guys see the crack-back block at the 2:30 mark of the video?
That dude got smoked!!!!!
Somebody grab that guy a Snickers cause he's not going any where for a while...
perhaps my favorite commercial of all time
I liked him as well. Nice throwing motion, not too much wasted motion. Runs well and looks pretty elusive.
Texas high school football is such a big deal, it amazes me everytime I see film.
Hard to say what level of competition he's playing against in the video, but he's a decisive runner with nice ability to make quick cuts in traffic and in the open field.
I like him. And his brain.
It is hard to tell the level of competition, but judging on the field alone, I would say his school takes football pretty serious.
Plays in Texas' 5A Div 1 (bigger schools) which is the highest level of competition in Texas HS. Russell lost to Trinity High School the past two years in the playoffs. Trinity has been top ten nationally last 5 years.
And yes - it is pretty serious.
to be a good athlete and has some speed. I liked the throws in traffic over the deep balls to wide open WR's. He also seems pretty good finding open WR's on the move.
I also think it's cool that one of the HS stadiums has a Walgreens at the stadium. That makes it so easy to pick up some candy or a shake weight at halftime.
for the shake weight reference.
Geez, let's get his receiver #10.
... wesley hawthorne, 3 star prospect. Has offers from arkansas-pinebluff and towson
I'm no scout, but he looked pretty damn good to this layman's eyes.
I wonder if he's ever taken a snap under center. Whatever, I'd be happy if we got him. Always love to covet thy neighbor's recruits.
not a ton but yes he has taken snaps under center.
Sounds pretty sweet to me. Sign him up.
... channeling your inner Tater.
I for one am pretty excited that Brady Hoke is going after a dual threat qb. I feel like having a qb that is mobile is such an added benefit. Its even being seen the next generation of great QB's: Rodgers, Big Ben, and Sanchez are all mobile guys.
pretty impressive highlight film (sometimes these are misleading). I hope this kid turns blue - looks like her throws a nice ball and is mobile as well.
Also judging from his rivals profile, he is a genius - should have no trouble learning a complex playbook and understanding defensive coverages (assuming he is coachable)
... this ESPN article talks about how he started with an offer from purdue and FIU, and now he's one of the top QB's in the state.
hmmm... we'll see
Teammates and coaches are more important. Fair enough
I hate that Rivals divides the quarterback rankings between pro-style and dual-threat. At the end of the day they're quarterbacks and their job is going to be to throw the ball, unless they're going to play in a true option offense. Not all "dual-threat" quarterbacks are suited best for a spread.
I'm a Student Pastor here in Arlington and Russell is in my youth ministry. A fine kid with some good talent. He and I have bantered back and forth over the past year as he looked into MSU and Purdue (where he is currently committed.) He didn't look at Michigan because of the spread as he can throw the ball and felt like at Michigan it was all about the legs.
Believe it or not, he has not mentioned to me that he is interested in MIchigan but he wasn't at church yesterday either, so if this ie new he may be wanting to mention it in person.
I, of course biased, would love to see him at Michigan. He isn't gonna threaten Devin in the next year or two but he does have some skill. Our student ministry hosted a flag football tourney at Jerry's World last month and Martin High School represented well with several Div 1 athletes. Russell's team came in third of the 47 teams - actually beaten by the winning team (a bunch of Juniors/Sophomores from Arlington.)
EDIT: sorry for the long post.
have him stay with Craig Roh
Your post, I has interest in it.
When he gives me permission, I'll tell more.
Thanks for looking out for the Maize and Blue.
Let him know about Zingerman's, the weather in the Spring and Summer, that there is nothing better than a Fall Saturday with a home game and once you’re a Michigan man your always a Michigan man. By the way the academics are pretty good too. Those that stay will be Champions or Doctors or Lawyers.
I know West Lafayette and it's no Ann Arbor by a long shot.
Those that stay will be Champions or Doctors or Lawyers.
That's very cool cjm. And it wasn't too long, I've written posts that long without even saying anything worth reading.
It sounds like he trusts and respects you. I think it's good of you not to be the guy who pushes UM just because you're a fan. However, if he talks to you about it (as it seems he has in the past), it's certainly not out of bounds to let him know how amazing Michigan is and how we're better than Purdue in every way except boringness (maybe not that exact wording). If you want to let him know many people who didn't know he existed yesterday are raving about him on the interwebs today, that would be cool too.
And of course, if you have any further information you'd like to share with the board or with me privately so I can share it with the board and take credit for it, you're more than welcome.
we have Russell Bellomy's Underachieving All Stars to look forward to in 2016?
looks like a solid passer and come good athleticism. who is that kid at :55 seconds? broke a few tackles and showed some good moves. And what do you think about our chances with Bellomy?
His highlights are pretty impressive. He reminds me of a Taylor Martinez with better throwing mechanics. I'll take him!
I remember someone saying that about Denard a couple of years ago
Bellomy played in one of Texas' top divisions. He's had to face talent on a regular basis that guys outside of only a few other states are unlikely to face, fwiw.
That's fine and dandy, but why are we chasing him when there are much better qb's out there. I believe borges and hoke have a particular qb in mind to fit their system and they will not look anywhere else. This is going to hurt us, and i'm trying to keep my tounge straight, but they are acting a certain way about this qb thing.
What i liked about RR is he didn't care who were as long as you can do the job and he broke the mold in michigan when it came to that qb. if you know what i mean.
Most of them commited to schools long ago that they aren't going to decommit from now.
I believe borges and hoke have a particular qb in mind to fit their system and they will not look anywhere else. This is going to hurt us, and i'm trying to keep my tounge straight, but they are acting a certain way about this qb thing.
Curious, what do you mean by this. What kind of QB do you think they are looking for? Is this kid similar to the QB they had at SDSU. Also, this is the first QB they are looking at here.
Wait, what? How in hell are they supposed to "act?" Should they be "acting" like Rich Rodriguez? Jim Tressel? Nick Saban? Do you think that Hoke doesn't care if his QB "can do the job" or not?
If you follow the link from the posted video, you will find his interview from the elite 11...
I don't think anyone is supposed to know he is visiting - I think he was trying to keep it under wraps.
we won't tell anybody else.
Is he still a Purdue commit? According to some comments on the youtube highlight video he commited to Purdue.
To hell with Purdue.
You're going to piss off Danny Hope. I'm sure that will break your heart.
He is still a Purdue commit.
This is what Scout says but that's just for now.
Bellomy is not even ranked among the top dual-threat qb's. If borges and hoke want to go after a ranked d-t qb, why don't they go for Jacoby Brissett out of FLORIDA who's in the top 5 as far as d-t qb's go to .http://rivals.yahoo.com/Michigan/football/recruiting/player-Jacoby-Brissett-84272;_ylt=AqKMGdDdWuOosjEWYLuDQOBpspB4
fun fact I learned from ESPN (we all know how reliable they are!) is that North Carolina is recruiting him to play basketball. Since he is only a 2 star shooting guard, i think this may be a way to get him to play football as well ala Julius Peppers
see what happened with quarterback Robert Marve, running back Ralph Bolden, and receiver Keith Smith, and BB player Robbie Hummel. A couple repeat torn ACLs after treatment and apparently more. Epidemic?
the case is that this is crunch time and borges and hoke have their head up the asses while they are aiming for second rate qb's when we only have 2 that can get on the field. we need to sign to in this class and hope that one is good enough to play now if Denard or Devin gets hurt and let the other qb redshirt.
By the way Drew Brees and Kyle Orton played at Purdue.
So first you tell us that Bellomy is second-rate, and now you're bringing up the fact that a recent Super-Bowl winner and another NFL starter played at Purdue. Does the fact that Purdue offered the supposedly second-rate Bellomy a scholarship mean anything to you?
Maybe the coaching staff reached out to Brisett and we just don't know about it. Also, it is the final week of January and signing day is a week and a half away, so it's not exactly the time to start building a relationship with a blue-chipper. I have no problem with offering/signing Bellomy or someone similar.
And yeah, I know we are Michigan and we should expect more than an, "OMG 3 STARRRZZZZ!!1!!11!," quarterback. But sometimes you take the hand you are dealt, raise the pot, and see what you get on the flop, turn, and river. I would rather have Russell Bellomy in the recruiting class than swing and miss badly on a longshot like Brissett and have nothing.
I'm surpised Coach Hoke hasn't hired you as recruting supervisor yet.
Is that I'm not sure that our current situation is the best one for attracting a blue-chipper this season.
Right now, you have Denard, who is the starter for at least two years. Then, there's Gardner, who could be there for four years (assuming that redshirt comes through). If you're a blue-chipper, do you want to recind your current commitment or if you're not committed, sign with a school that's not on your radar when there isn't any clear road for playing for two years minimum and maybe up to four?
I think it's more likely that we get a developmental guy in this class and maybe another one in the next class and then go for a blue-chipper in one of the next two classes.
You do realize that almost all blue-ship quarterbacks don't care about that, right? This year, the #2 and #3 Pro Style QBs both committed to the same school, a school that took the #5 pro style QB the year before. So they both have a very highly rated guy just one year above them, and a virtually equally rated guy in the same class. It's very likely that neither of them start until they are seniors, and also likely that one of them is never a starter unless he transfers. The school is USC, but this happens a lot.
Anyway, these blue chip kids all think they're the best ever, and think they'll be the one starting. For as good as Gardner is, I don't think he's what's keeping QBs from coming.
Why are we looking for another dual threat QB? Isn't that what we are trying to move away from now? Don't get me wrong, I love rolling the QB out of the pocket and having the option of him taking off [a la Aaron Rodgers] but is that a part of the scheme that Borges and Hoke are trying to implement long term?
This would be a surprising and nice pick-up.
I figured RR would take committed kids from other schools in conference, but didn't figure Hoke to be that sleazy. I thought he was a stand-up guy. Go take kids from a B12 or ACC school, not us.
Hi Boiler. Welcome aboard.
I read this blog a lot, one of my favorites.
I understand why Michigan is looking for another QB and all, just why go after a kid already committed to another school in conference?
We reached out to QB recruits committed to Pitt and BC and both of them said they were fully committed to their respective schools. What are you hearing on your end?
But he just has to look at our depth charts and see that we are relatively deep at QB for the next few years. Probably is entertaining other offers, or at least Michigans, because you only have 2 scholly QB's and he can probably play sooner.
Yes, heaven forbid Hoke offer the kid a chance to play at a school he may prefer.
Maybe you haven't noticed, but there have been several kids flip-flopping between B10 schools this recruiting cycle. So...
a) This happens and you will just have to get used to it
b) I resent your remarks insinutating that RR was the only one who would ever do such a thing, and the fact that you essentially called him sleazy.
do need a QB in this class but i didn't think we would go after a dual-threat QB!!!I thought we were going back to the old Michigan.GO BLUE!!!
