Terrell Pryor...Yikes...

Submitted by Fresh Meat on

I know this has been brought up a few weeks ago, but man, I think we dodged a bullet by not getting TP. He sucks, I mean sucks, at passing. Now, I do think he would put up better numbers in our system than OSU's just because he could run more, but still, wow he sucks at throwing the ball. Even the passing TD he got near the end against Purdue to put them within one score was a terrible decision and throw that he got bailed out on. Tate is such a superior passer, and when he gets experience both in the system and just in general he is going to put up much better numbers than TP, count on it.

I don't know if anyone caught it, but tosu is still one game behind us for most consecutive road wins in conference. This is one instance where I love people rushing the field.

Do you think tosu was exposed at all today, or did they just play bad?

They were completely exposed. They also played a bad game. The only teams they defeated convincingly this year have been Toledo and Illinois. I have no idea why they're ranked 7th. None. They barely pulled it out against Navy. They lost to USC, who isn't as good as in recent years (rebuilding, young quarterback, etc.). Can't wait until their last three games. Brutal. Brutal. Brutal.

It's the rank that kills me!

I know JT promised him the job as QB for 4 years, but it's pretty clear that he's not QB material. However, his height, speed, and strength would be perfect for a WR (maybe in the Percy Harvin mold).

It's almost as if Tressel sacrificed 4 years to keep Pryor from going to Michigan.

190lbs soaking wet. I fail to see the connection to TP here. Harvin also has the quick side-to-side agility, whereas Pryor seems to be a Vince Young, long-strider type. Maybe not a bad idea but a bad example for sure.

edit: beaten to the punch!

I wouldn't count him out just yet. I say if he looks like this after or during his JR year then the "bust" maybe labeled. Vince Young didn't go off until his red shirt sophomore year? It's looking like with all his physical tools he just lacks a lot of the mental tools.

Color me skeptical but I'm just not ready to give up on Pryor yet. Some kids just have a slower learning curve.

That said if in the first game next year Pryor is still making awful reads, throwing into double coverage and telling people everyone murders then I will agree we dodged a bullet with Pryor.

more and more obvious that jumping from high school to college is the equivalent of Vince Young going from college to the pros. You can't get bye on just size at that position. Give me Tate and an actual qb's intangibles any day!

Purdue played a great defensive scheme. Getting in his face is the key considering he has no decision making skills. He is a good runner, but not when there is a lot of help on the edge. He can only complete passes in 2 ways: 1- receiver is wide open or 2- Luck (his receiver makes an impossible grab, or another receiver just so happens to be in the area and makes the grab). I love watching the confusion on his face when he goes to the sideline, almost as if he thinks he's too good for this to be happening to him. Maybe he'll hold a press conference for us.

One report says that TP wanted to be a pro style QB so he could go to the pros and JT promised him that he would let him do that and help him develope. If so, it appears the Vest is willing to risk the team's potential for success over this committment. With their defense, just put TP in the spread or option and they are BCS bound.
I wonder if he had it to do over again if he would still turn the chance to run Rich Rod's spread. Oh well, it worked out well for us. GO BLUE!

I have heard that too but I think it's bunk. TP never had any interest in Michigan under LC and Lefty. If anyone has a track record of producing NFL quality QB's, it's Scott. The only reason TP did a double take at UM is when RR was hired. And TP was interested in WVU. So, maybe it was something else, like $$$ or other non football promises that lead TP to OSU. Who knows. But TP has not shown any type of growth as a QB other than that he's most likely bigger, stronger and faster as a player. What can't be taught in the weight room is decision making and it appears TP doesn't yet have that ability.

If he went to Michigan. The coaches and scheme would have brought forth more productivity.

I think we would have won at least two more games last year with Pryor at QB.

That said, I am happy with who we have, and who we are getting (Gardner)

I love Tate, LOVE tate, but I can't wait to see Gardner. I think the difference between Gardner and TP is between the ears. Everything you hear about Gardner is how he is such a student of the game, and I believe he won best in the classroom at the Elite 11 camp. Also, it says something about him I think that he recognizes this offense is the best for showing off his skill set, and that he doesn't want to be in a "pro" offense.

I'm pretty sure that everyone said that Terrelle Pryor was a student of the game as well, to go along with his athletic ability and yada yada. I think this phrase is so unbelievably overused, and gets thrown around at just about every overhyped recruit on the planet.

That being said, Gardner looks like the real deal, from my extremely limited talent judging experience.

Was that, even in his HS highlights, his big passing plays consisted of scrambling around like Vince Young, and then throwing precisely those arm punts we've come to know and love at OSU. I never saw many highlights of him throwing an out, or a slant, or a deep post on a line (disclaimer: yes, we're talkin' bout highlights here. Someone more knowledgeable may dispute this.) The difference was that in HS, after he ran around for 20 seconds, the receiver was so open that he could camp out under the absurd parabola that Pryor had heaved, and it would end up as a big play (though YAC were limited by that hangtime).

He might develop more skills as passer, because he's obviously a great athlete. But as of right now, Pryor is basically a taller version of Denard. Blue-tinted glasses and all, but I think Gardner shows more promise as a QB than Pryor ever did.

That's not even really disputable, now that I think about it.

But, to be fair, Pryor's a marginally better passer as well, I think (partially because of the height difference, of course). The good things is that Denard might be able to learn how to read defenses and improve his throwing mechanics, but TP ain't never going to be able to fly like that.

He will never and I say again NEVER play a down in the NFL as a QB. Vince Young had his quirks as a thrower but at least he could rack up a ton of TD's. Pryor would be a possible 1st rounder if he switched to WR. 6'6 230-240 4.3 or 4.4 40 time. We would not have gone 3-9 if we had him last year but in the long run we are better off with Tate and D-Rob.

I remember thinking Brian Hartline was a big idiot for declaring for the draft last year. Little did I know at the time that it was the only sensible thing to do.

If you read most of todays Buckeye melted boards, it's not just TP's QB skills that are stagnating, it's his attitude.

Everyone knew hew was a pre-madonna during his recruitment. Calling a press conference to say he's not deciding yet, etc. He's always come off as an entitled jerk (in contrast to genuine confidence in your abilities).

Now (admittedly gleaned from OSU boards) he's yelling at other players, not listening to coaches, arguing back, not taking responsibility, etc. Very Mallet-like.

Those are NOT signs of a maturing sophomore quarterback. Those are signs he's destined to be the next Ocho Cinco.

Everyone keeps saying how TP would have been better off going to Michigan because of coaching, however I don't think coaching is the issue. Pure talent will not get a team to 6 BCS games, 3 of which were national championship games. Take a look at Charlie Weis if you need proof of that.

Those who spend the time improving their mechanics, learning the schemes, truly understanding the game, are those who will be the most successful. I think everyone will admit that TP is a better athlete than Tate, but what happens in the weight room doesn't change the decision making on the field. I'm willing to bet that Tressel and tOSU have given TP every resource at their disposal (athletic resources) to helping him improve. Based on what TP has shown on the field, it looks like he is not utilizing those resources.
