Tennessee (2-seed) loses to Mercer (7-seed) in first round of NIT
S! E! C!
Treated as a mid major is doing a disservice to mid majors. Since the SEC is 0-2 so far against them in postseason play.
I would say Robert Morris and Mercer qualify more as "low-major" teams, so apparently Kentucky and Tennessee are actually D2.
I kept wanting to think that Mercer had beaten a few other "BCS-level" teams earlier this season, and then it hit me:
Mercer defeated Alabama. In Tuscaloosa.
(Mercer also beat Florida State in Tallahassee)
Well, 1-2. Point still stands though.
I take too much pleasure in this for being an educated adult male with real world problems.
Yeah, welcome to mgoblog
After news of the AJMFRHG's antics, I'll take any solace where I can find it. Mid-major mentality indeed.
misery loves company brother... and I've often found solace in other people's failures... does that make me small, I guess...
Somewhere tonight, Commissioner Slive's is drinking himself to obvilion and I'm LOVING IT! SUCK IT, SEC!
Gotta be kinda dissapointing for the conference when two of your four best teams go out in the first round of the NIT. Florida's (I picked them) potential Final Four run is the only thing keeping the SEC from being a total non factor in college basketball this year.
It'd be nicer to see this happen in football, but I'll take what I can get.
going far also. I'm about to change that.
Yeah. Florida lost to both Kentucky and Tennessee within the last 25 days. Who just lost as heavy favorites to mid-majors. I know the transitive property doesn't always apply in sports, but wow, that doesn't inspire confidence.
Florida is crazy overrated. No good wins besides Wisconsin early in the year (I think).
Not really, I think. In their wins, they blow people out, ther losses come by 1-2 possessions in 5 of their 7, eventually Florida will win games that come down to the wire like that, and I like them to start doing so in the tournament.
They blew out Marquette as well.
Also have Florida in the final four (point differential is the best predictor of future performance, etc, etc) but would totally be willing to blow a bracket for further embarassment of the ESS EEE SEE
Florida out to the Gophers in the 2nd round.
That's what I have too.
Are insulted to be compared to the SEC
I like it
Not Bama, and I think the dude in the back is Mizzou's coach, but I still find this appropriate:
can't make this stuff up!
Now that's what I call poetic justice.
But I'm sure somewhere, someplace, Commissioner Slive is giving absolutely zero shits about his conference's basketball woes.
All he's thinking about is his NFL factories, future SEC football dominance and an almost certain 8th straight national title.
Living in the south it's so funny to listen to the tone in sports talk when basketball rolls around. Haa!!
I still don't see him complaining about the treatment. I see him saying the league should be better and should be embarrassed at their overall performance. We should also expect more from ourselves than to continually bring this garbage up. Nothing to see here, move along.
He's saying that a 2nd place SEC team deserves to be I the show. FYI the B1G has more than 2 teams.
Maybe he had just watched that BW3 commercial where 256 teams make the tourney. March-May Madness!
That's not what he was saying. He specifically said that Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee were tournament teams but didn't get in. He was not calling out his league (because then he was calling of himself) he was bitching. And this is what he gets.
I don't think you know how "respectively" works...
"And then Kentucky and Tennessee went on to lose in the first round of the NIT, to Mercer and Robert Morris respectively. That's a true power conference right there."
I blame the cold medication.
Who cares? Was it that hard to figure out?
Go Stanford, and Go Colorado State!
I certainly understand the irony involved. HOWEVA, I don't think it is good karma to get too excited about this when Michigan does not have a very good chance of making it out of the first weekend of the tournament.
This coming from the guy who said "No way this team beats MSU. They will get embarassed again."
You make me look like an optimist, which is saying something.
Well at least I have that going for me...which is nice.
the Knoxville area, and I can't ask for any better way to start off NCAA Tourney week. Idiots were complaining that they should've been a one seed in the NIT.
They 'posed ta be ESS EEE CEE!
So SEC speed refers to tournament exits?
I did think Bama should have made the tournament but not the other two.
Sorry for the thread jack, but seeing as how I do not have enough points to make my own, I figured that I would pass this information along in the most recent board post. If anyone feels this story warrants its own thread, please create one on my behalf.
It appears that Jordan Drake - a former MSU Football recruit - was sentenced 18 months probation after facing felony charges for "adulterating a food item" in relation to his senior prank. Drake distributed breath mints containing a certain bodily fluid to his classmates. This is just an odd story, and it appears Drake lost his scholarship as a result.
The kid graduated in 2012, and this happened about a year ago. He was just "sentenced" recently.
I was aware that the original story wasn't knew, however I thought the update would allow some of us to have a laugh at states expense. The story seemed to be showing up on many news sources as well.
Thanks for checking it out anyways.
Has there been a major program in the past decade that's had two worse consecutive hires than Derek Dooley and Cuonzo Martin?
I mean that's as bad as it gets. Tennessee used to be a powerhouse.
I am a UM alum living in Knoxville, and something of a UT basketball fan (distant second to Michigan, although my house was divided when they played in the tournament 2 years ago). A lot of UT fans here compare the Dooley and Martin hires, but I think that there is a big distinction - Martin's teams have improved over the course of the season, while Dooley's never did.
On the football situation - it's worth noting that Lane Kiffin left the football program in total disarray - leaving after one year, but still managing to bring NCAA sanctions on the school. Dooley was not a BCS level head coach, but they couldn't get someone at that level on short notice and under a cloud.
One more note on Cuonzo Martin's comments about the SEC - they might be boneheaded, but he has to come out defending the SEC a little too loudly. There's some suspicion of him here because of his BIG pedigree.
Don't feel too sorry for the Volunteers - there's always women's basketball!
He's right they did not deserve the NIT.
This brought the slighest smile to my face, but it still isn't justified.
The funny story in the numbers is that Mercer won despite Tennessee maintaining an offensive rebound percentage that was over two times what Mercer was achieving (51.4% to 24%). The SEC was simply outshot by a significant margin (effective FG% for Mercer was 56.7%, nearly 13% better than Tennessee).
It seems, at this point, that if the SEC adopted a mid-major mentality and approach that Martin derided, they might actually improve their basketball outlook.
And just think, without the addition of Missouri, the SEC might have had only two teams in the NCAA tournament.
If Florida would just bomb out early so we could all feel well and truly smug....
what happened to that Tennessee fan that was on the blog yesterday. I'm guessing we may never hear from him again
Yup, we had a bad year and still won 20 games, top 10 nationally in attendance, and have had more tournament success in recent years than Michigan, such as back to back elite 8's.
Not worried at all.
Michigan is better than Tennessee in everything ever. Including 1997 Heisman trophies
back-to-back Elite 8's? Call me impressed that a program that's been to one Elite 8 in their history managed to get there two years in a row.
Hopefully your title is obsolete by 9:30 tonight.
is a meal in the South, not just an expression for a poor choice of words.
B1G needs the keep our mouths shut and advance in the Tourney.
I've never heard of Mercer. Awesome.
I'm not laughing. They ruined my NIT bracket!
Really? Or is that a joke? Cuz I've never known of anyone who had an NIT bracket.
essssssssssss eeeeeeeeeeeeee seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
SEC! SEC! SEC!
Tennessee's coach is an asshat.
How was Michigan in Beleins second year?
Some of you guys are clueless.
be oppossed to naming a kid Mercer Woodson?
Live and work in the Macon Ga area so this is great to see. In fact Mercers campus is less than a mile from the fire station I am assigned to.
"Well our kids were still upset about Sunday and came out a little flatter than normal and then we played good Tennessee basketball but it was too late. And give mercer a lot of credit. That's a damn good basketball team that should've been in the NCAA tournament." Right coach??
It's funny, but we've got to start winning national championships before we can talk trash. The SEC has won three in basketball since we won our last one (2000).
Won't be the same story next year. Hard to be the best conference in every sport all the time.
Mark it down, the SEC will be better than the B10 in basketball next year.
maybe Kentucky and Florida will be at that level, but the rest of the SEC is just...
I guess that's because they can't do worse. Now get off our playground and get your sorry ass home.
Seriously that was a great. Thanks for the laugh....
that is all
