Temptation and the "You Suck" Chant

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on

One of my favorite things about the Michigan band during the game is when they play "Temptation" after the defense comes up with a crucial 3rd down stop.  I love the song.

When the band plays Temptation, the students start chanting "You Suck" to the opposing team/fans.  I graduated in 2002 and I don't remember this chant at all emanating from the student section when I was there.

I know that I have participated in much worse chants at Yost as a student, but I am not a huge fan of this chant.

I think that it is kind of tacky and lacking in creativity and class.  Furthermore, sometimes the "You Suck" chant actually drowns out the band and you can't even hear Temptation.  I don't think that the students should be forced to stop the chant, but I do find it a bit annoying.

Have I already turned into a grumpy old fan?  Anyone else have an opinion on the issue?

Well it looks like this year we can be distracted from the "you suck" by the vuvuzelas. People are ordering those stupid horns in bulk for football games.

I'm not offended by "You suck," but it's pretty brainless.  Our hockey chants are clever.  This is not.  We can do better than this.

a group of alumni attended the U Conn game two years ago, and their fans serenaded us with "we U Conn, you suck" and we replied with a chop and the chant "safe school, safe school, safe school".

we were small, but we won that battle.  if only Stu could hit layups.

This chant is really not all that bad if we only did it at the end of the game and we are winning to twist the sword a little or something . but i have season tickets and when we are saying this all game long and when we are losing i think that is when it starts to really lose credit and become stupid. I remember when they chanted this all game long against Toledo and we lost. My girlfriend goes to toledo and ever person i know that went to that game from toledo think michigan is a big joke because they said that and rub it in to me about how we lost to toledo and that all game long they said toledo sucked when we lost to thhem

The "you suck" chant from the student section during Temptation started in 2006.  I thought it was funny at the time.  And in 06, when we crushing our competition every week, it seemed like an accurate chant to have.  Now?  Not so much.

I'm '07, and I always thought that it was incredibly tacky, especially since the MMB has been playing Temptation since the dawn of time, and I can think of tons of kids who now refer to it as "The 'You Suck' Song."  That's obnoxious.

Michigan Stadium is not the Metropolitan Opera. It is the largest sports stadium in the U.S. and the fourth largest in the world. College football is supposed to be noisy and rowdy, and the home team fans are supposed to harass and intimidate the visiting team as much as possible short of acting like total obnoxious OSUholes. Of course, at the Big House, this has been interpreted to mean:

  • Everyone sit down.
  • No throwing marshmallows.
  • No artificial noise makers.
  • No beach balls.
  • No alcohol.
  • And, now, no "You Suck".

And people wonder why Michigan Stadium is not a particularly intimidating road venue.
