Tears of Infinite Sadness ... WTF?

Submitted by UMFootballCrazy on
Someone, anyone, explain to me how we morphed from being a levelheaded realistic portion of the fanbase who value the almost mathematical analysis of the UFR, solid research and well reasoned arguments into a fanbase that simply vents pure emotion and we cry tears of infinite sadness? Reading through the many forum threads on the loss to OSU, I wonder what has happened to us MGoBloggers...

It's sports, not coin collecting. If you aren't a little upset by what happened, you don't care. Do you get all charged up and excited by a big win? Why? It's just a game. Also, speak for yourself.

^ | | This is why my coin collection is better than Mr. Book Cover Judger's. W00t(!), twoonies and buffalo nickels, w00t! Dude, man, *type* for yourself. It's not just a game. Wait. Err, it is just a game. Sister flipper. A single subject matter esconsed in a dichotomy of perspectives. Frickin' rockin' my world over here.

I think if you do a "realistic assessment" of this game you'll see a great effort by our players wasted by very poor coaching strategy at the end. That is worth being upset about.

I completely agree. I am not going to call for John's head, but it was a poor decision at the end of the game not to 1) guard the inbound pass 2) guard Evan Turner with at least one man. I would venture to say that you are not going to be able to go coast-to-coast for a lay-up in 2.2 seconds, so having LLP under the basket made very little sense to me. The thing that really sucks is that he had coached a very good game both yesterday and today right up until that point. It is just the way things are going right now I guess. Maybe the hockey team will be able to deliver a win tonight to soften this blow.

The immediate threat of turning into the next Notre Dame is what has done it. Don't get me wrong, I will stick through UofM athletics through the "thin" we're experiencing now. That doesn't mean I can't complain about it though. It's sort of like having a kid that has fallen off the wagon over the past couple of years. You still love the kid to death, and you always will. However, that doesn't mean you can't get pissed off at him because of the bad shit he does. Just let the people vent.

The defensive strategy on the last play was terrible -- we're not allowed to say that? Yes, it was a 1/10 shot, but they shouldn't have even been able to get a 1 in 10 shot off in that situation. Being a Michigan fan doesn't require you to bury your head in the ground and not comment on bad coaching decisions.

Are we allowed to vent....yes. Are we pissed that Turner hit a one a season game winning shot at our expense.....yes. But wither it be in football or basketball or hockey, these posts are more in the vain of..."We lost!?! We didn't you cover the guy that made the basket/catch/goal?" etc.. What shot should they been able to get off? 1/20? 1/50? The guy made a shot. What the heck does playing the guy inbounding the ball do? With 2.2 seconds left, the guy is NOT getting the ball back. There is no time. Would I have liked a more contested shot? I would have like it if we had stuffed him. Being a Michigan fan also doesn't require me to find an excuse every time my team loses. A superior player stepped up and made the shot. That is All

What the heck does playing the guy inbounding the ball do? With 2.2 seconds left, the guy is NOT getting the ball back. There is no time. I think I see the disconnect. You have no clue about basketball strategy. You don't stick a man in front of the guy inbounding the ball so that he doesn't get the ball back. You do it so that he is obstructed and can't throw a precise pass. This is not a matter of hindsight -- the announcer made the observation that Michigan wasn't guarding the inbounder and that he would thus be able to get off a clean pass before the play even happened. The failure to guard the inbound guy was made worse by the fact that we put no pressure on them in the frontcourt. In fact, we put no pressure on them anywhere. Turner received a perfect pass with no one guarding him or the inbounds guy, and no one did anything to even disrupt his progress down the court. There was not one iota of defense in that entire play -- if there was, he would have had an infinitely more difficult shot than an uncontested 35 footer.

Don't forget that after a made basket, the inbounds guy can run the baseline. That significantly reduces the value of putting a defender on him. I don't have a problem with us leaving him unguarded there. As for pressure in the frontcourt, yeah, in hindsight it'd have been nice. But that's assuming that OSU still would have inbounded to Turner. If we'd have brought more defenders up to challenge him, the inbound guy probably would have thrown a pass further downcourt. There's always a tradeoff. To force a team to have to throw a shorter pass and heave up a 40-footer isn't necessarily bad strategy.

Looking for one of the many examples of angry OSU fans doing stupid things while experiencing the tears of infinite sadness and drinking while in proximity to a video camera to show you what can happen when you go too far down this path...instead...I found this:

Everybody needs to stop freakin out! The basketball program is fine and has lots of upside. But don't forget who we are! We are a football school!!!! Did anyone pay attention to the last two recruiting classes. I know people will point to our last two seasons, but holy #$&%! UM is gonna run by people from here on out. Look back at the past season. If you get rid of two bad breaks we had a winning season. (the purdue onside kick and the Illini rundown) They are just young kids. That's why they didn't hang on. This group is about to blow up. They'll be good next year but exceptional after that. Be proud and stay the course. and after living in Ohio for 3 years, they really do suck!

People who entered Michigan in 2007 got to see App State beat us in their first game. They got to see two losing football seasons, and a ton of heartbreaking basketball games. Those are the only four years we will have at this school and three of them have been wasted

Live and die by the sword. Unfortunately for you, it's been predominantly dying. If you want to boil your fandom down to the four years when you're sitting in the student section, then this mess certainly leaves something to be desired. But losing is part of being a fan and winning means nothing without it. No year at Michigan is "wasted." "...stick by them. Keep believing."
