Teams With the Most Bandwagon Fans

Submitted by the_big_house 500th on
You all know them and hate their bastardly guts for flopping teams that can win games. Living in Ohio I've seen more than my fair share. It was INCREDIBLE how Blue Jackets fans turned in Penguins fans during the playoffs and how quickly Browns and Buckeye fans convert to Steeler morons. So I provided a list of teams in my opinion that has the biggest amount of bandwagoners in all sports. 1. Pittsburgh Steelers (no doubt about it) 2. Ohio State (tough call between them and Pittsburgh) 3. Pittsburgh Penguins (YA GO PENS! I'M A JEALOUS HAWKS FAN BEAT THE WINGS!) 4. Manchester United (Beckham's gone time to move on, god...) 5. Dallas Cowboys (Still a fan after last night's loss?) 6. Florida Gators (I just like Tim Tebow. Yea right) 7. Los Angeles Lakers (Because Kobe plays for them dude!) 8. Boston Red Sox (Please don't get me started) 9. New York Yankees (refer to example 8.) 10. Bosotn Celtics (For the love of god BIRD RETIRED!)

Brady was a mid-season pickup on my fantasy football team and helped me win the league. I rooted for them in the Super Bowl a couple years later against Carolina, but not afterwards. I was rooting for Philly a few years later... I was kind of conflicted when they played the Giants. On the one hand, it would put an end to those annual 1972 Dolphins stories, and I had Brady and Moss on my fantasy team that year (I lost in the finals, Brady and Moss cooled off at the end of the year). On the other, I was pretty sick of the Patriots.

Seriously, how many douche bag wanna-be tough guys sport a NYY cap to try and look cool, If you are not a Yankee fan, or from NY, please don't wear a Yankee cap.

You could also say Team Canada hockey in the olympics. Nobody in the United States roots for USA Hockey anymore it's all Canada fans cause people like Brodeur, Crosby and Thorton play for them. Talk about being a traitor...

But in mine its: 1a. New York Yankees 1b. Notre Dame 2. LA Lakers 3. Duke (basketball only) 4. Dallas Cowboys 5. anybody else
FWIW, the only Steeler fans I know are people who grew up in Pittsburgh and now live in Texas or on the West Coast.

I went to the Wings vs Jackets game on April 3rd this past year and during the game Tressel was at Nationwide Arena and the speakers started playing "We Don't Give a Damn For The Whole State of Michigan." It was awesome to see Detroit kick the shit out of Columbus that night, 4-0.

I know that's true but I really don't get it. As a Michigan native and Wings fan from birth, I was raised to dislike but respect the other Original Six teams (even the Rangers, though that's hard to do). If I weren't a Wings fan I'd probably have grown up a Leafs fan. I don't get why they hate the Wings. It could have something to do with the fact that they haven't won a cup since 1964, while the Wings have 4 in the past 12 seasons.

"Oh you guys to the Stanley Cup every year!" WTF We have only been in 5 finals series in the past 11 years! How is that every year?! Yeah we make the playoffs every year because we have an unbelievable scouting team, recrutiting program and overall best organization in the NHL. People need to really grow up and recognize us.

of a jealousy thing than anything. i grew up in windsor so half of my friends are leafs fans. i don't have a issue with it, but when the playoffs role around its a different story. they are like the ND fans of hockey. they feel like that they should just be in the playoffs every year no matter what.

Especially when you get into the Original 6 discussion. Maple Leafs fans and also Montreal fans think they deserve to make the playoffs every year because they are "canada's teams." WTH They have sucked in the last ten years. 1990. none 1991. none 1992. none 1993. Montreal 1994. New York Rangers 1995. none 1996, none 1997. Detroit Red Wings 1998. Detroit Red Wings 1999. none 2000. none 2001. none 2002. Detroit Red Wings 2003. none 2004. none 2005. no season 2006. none 2007. none 2008. Detroit Red Wings 2009. none Proof that Detroit right now is the only team that is making the Orig 6 look good. They really should be praising us

fans aren't as bad as leaf fans for the simple fact that they won a cup in the last 20 years. and they have more then enough cups to fall back on. at least montreal is trying to get better unlike the leafs. the leafs traded away so much talent to get older players in there that it has ruined them. and the other thing that pisses me off about the leafs is that we will never get to play them in playoffs again unless its the finals, so all of their fans love to hold onto 1993 series win.

the entire sport of golf? If Tiger Woods isn't contending on a Sunday, the ratings are in the $hitter. Everyone loves Tiger, but few people really love the PGA tour. No one is lining up to watch Angel Cabrera and Ben Curtis tee it up on Sunday afternoon at the John Deere Classic.

How did I only see the Lakers in here twice? Most of the lower deck is filled with full-of-themselves celebrities who show up, wait til someone lets them know they've been on camera, and then leave. Because being seen at a Lakers game is a thing.

To respond to numero 3, as a Hawks fan: As the Wings are one of the most successful, if not the most successful, teams in the NHL, the fans have the right to be very confident in their team. However, as is true in every sport, presuming dominance in the playoffs is a very dangerous road to take. As a Hawks fan in Ann Arbor this last playoffs season, it was a little on the annoying side to hear Wings fan dismiss the Hawks from the very start, rather than providing solid analysis as to why we would be beaten. It was always how, not why. Or, in this many games, not because of the play of so and so. And that wears on your nerves after a while. Now granted, the Wings went on to win, looking really quite strong near the end. But you'll have to excuse Hawks fans that weren't exactly, shall we say, upset, when that very same "HA! There is no way we lose to the Pens" attitude came back and bit them right in the ass.

In college football, Ohio State leads in this category.... I live in South Bay LA...and I went out for my run last night and saw that some typical OSU douchebag put a Script Ohio in big lights on the balcony of his apartment, which I go running by down by the beach.... This is USC territory too... I wanted to throw a gallon of gas on those lights and hope that it went up in flames...lol

Uh, I really don't think that counts as a bandwagon fan. Perhaps you're confusing bandwagon with obnoxious. Bandwagon would be if OSU won their game against USC. For the record, I'd say USC and Miami are the top of the list for college football.

Down here in DC everybody is a Pittsburgh fan. After the Penguins beat my Caps and Wings, half of my school became Penguins fans. The same thing happened after both of the Steeler's Super Bowl wins too

Whoever is playing Michigan. Kind of like those hard up Penn State fans who were gathered around the TV while Michigan was losing to Appy State. Poor Penn State, having to live vicariously through a small college somewhere in...somewhere. UM beating those bastards that year has to rank as one of the All Time "comeuppance" wins in the history of sport.

I must agree mostly with those of you that have said USC and Lakers. Growing up I never remembered ever hearing about an SC fan, then all of the sudden they start winning and basically all of Southern California is a SC fan. In fact growing up I had more UCLA fans than SC fans. Same goes for the Lakers when they got Kobe. I guess you can add Angels and Ducks to that list as well. I went to an Angel game before they won the world series 6th row up on the 3rd base side cost about $25. I'm willing to bet the ticket price has at least tripled since then. I hate baseball so I don't really care.

I went to law school at SC and know lots of great Trojan fans (people who were in those 45,000 crowds when Hackett was in charge), but they definitely take the cake in the bandwagon fan department. I can't even stand to watch an SC game in public here in Southern California (unless I'm at the game with friends) because so many dirtbags with zero football knowledge who have no affiliation with the actual school treat the Trojans like the NFL team in LA. Combine that with the equally dumb folks on the anti-SC bandwagon (you know the type who doesn't really have a team but loves to hate on any successful school/team if/when they lose or even play a close game). I've heard from tons of Miami alums that nobody really gives a shit about the team unless they are playing FSU (and the attendance numbers reflect that). Have to stick up for the Lakers though. They may have lots of bandwagon fans in other parts of the country (and those people are annoying as all hell, just like the non-New Yorker Yankee fans), but they and the Dodgers always get big crowds even when they aren't doing so well and the celebrities become harder to find (the Lakers have just been consistently good for about 30 years). Angels/Ducks fans in Orange County are a thousand times worse than any LA fans.

It is true about the Lakers always having big crowds, but how many stupid flags, license plate frames and stickers have you seen pop up out of nowhere ever since they got Kobe and started winning championships. I have no idea about the Dodger fans, but I would rather watch a game at Edison than Chavez Ravine. It has nothing to do with the fans (other than the stabbing that took place in the parking lot with the mexican gangbangers scared me a bit) but, the whole experience of actually getting to your seat is pretty terrible at Chavez Ravine.

most kids at my school in the past couple years like Florida, texas, or USC. I will have friends over and we play NCAA and they always pick one of those teams and its just like common, seriously? and they are like "oh, I was born in texas or I have family in texas" but yet they cant name two players on the team...WV was one also for a year or two and kids act like they actually like these teams but when u confront them about how they are a fan, they just say I like this player or I like this coach..Florida I would say is the biggest bandwagoner out of them all though...I walk through school and see about three kids everyday with florida gator shirts on but yet we live in michigan...comon, lets be honest with ourselves.

The Pistons are the worst. I sat there in my teal jersey, night after night through the mid-90's in an almost empty Palace. They win a title and suddenly there are 2 million Pistons fans? You don't get to take a decade off. Before the mid-80's, nobody had given a shit about them for 30 years.

teal jersey agrees with you. Used to be able to get buy one get one tickets back in the dog days, then when the pistons started to win, the sellout streak started, became impossible to get tix. Hell it was even impossible to get a seat to watch a playoff game at b-dubs. Michael Curry's "coaching" caused a lot of fans to abandon the band wagon.

ChiliDog

SOOO many bandwagoneers. Back in the early 90's and before the sweater arrival, the only fans I ever noticed were relitives(by marriage), or elementary school freinds. Their parents were fans, so they passed on their shitty beliefs. Growing up near the Ohio boarder, there were always more Michigan fans. Now I see obnoxious, drunk, buckeye turds everywhere. All across the country. My test is very simple for the bandwagoneers; Who was the coach and who was their SORRY qb before the sweaturd. I'm nice enough to give them a hint as well.

ND Texas - it seemed like everyone was on the bandwagon when VY was there. The Big 3 of Florida Schools - back in the 90's when FSU was on top of the world, there were a ton of Noles fans, then it siwtched to Miami in the early 2000's now it seems like the Gators and Tebow are the bandwagon darlings. Yankees Celtics Pats Rams had a big bandwagon back in the greatest show on turf days.

I live in Baton Rouge, definitely LSU. Way too many fans who have absolutely no ties to the University who jump on board when they are doing well. There's very little support for the university's academics because all people care about is football.

I know you are all rolling downhill here but aren't you being a bit naive? Should we have packed the palace when the stones were winning 30 games? It doesn't make sense - so sure it is annoying for a USC or Florida when a bunch of tools are rooting for them for no reason in East Lansing. But lets not get confused that if the Lions were to get good then fans are "bandwagon" if they come back. Its just hard to root for a brutal franchise...

and K-State used to suck. Suck to the point of being the worst program in Division 1. Snyder gets there and starts winning and the "catbackers" came out of the woodwork. It was crazy.
