I don't have a lot to say here except to note how RIDICULOUSLY identical both teams are in statistical profile. Rebounding and FT% are EXACT, 3P% is just one tenth off, and Steals, FT% and Assist rate are all razor thin.

I'd like to THINK that a team putting up identical numbers to M in the SEC should be highly advantageous for Michigan. I mean, by and large, they even play our game.

POSS - 64.7 / 62.7

FGA/Game - 58.2 / 54.3

3PA/Game - 19.7 / 21.8

OFF REB/Game - 10.7 / 10.7

It's unreal! It's a freakin' Mortal Kombat Mirror Match!

We will not be beaten at our own game.

Problem is, you're not posting defensive stats.  Their defense has been significantly better than ours.  Against possibly worse competition for sure.

I'd still rather play them than have to face the never-ending layup line from Kansas again.  I still can't figure out how we won that game.  Kansas was able to get any 5-foot shot they wanted every time down the floor.  Every Kansas starter shot 50% or better.   How did we win???

Those stats are eerily similar; the SOS is very close too, but, like you, I still have to believe Michigan has played more talented teams, ones nearer the top of the top 25 than those at the bottom.

Yes, their offense and ours are very similar, so this will be a question of who executes better.

As for opponents, we have clearly played better teams.  We are 7-6 against the Sagarin Top 25, they are 3-3.  We are 11-6 against the Sagarin Top 50, they are 6-5.  So we've played a lot more top teams.

It could just come down to who gets multiple people on fire.  If we have Burke and Hardaway on fire, then we win.  If our guys aren't shooting well and theirs are, they win.  It might just be that simple.  Then again, McGary could throw in 20+ again, so who knows?

I bet UM faced tougher defenses, and it would interesting to see UM's stats if the Wolverines did not play in the grab, hold, hack and no foul called B1G.

I hate Florida. They have won enough titles in football and basketball recently. They must be stopped.

After reading those stats, the 3 keys to the game I can see are:  A) take care of the basketball (limit turnovers), 2) Free throws, free throws, free throws, and D) just WIN, BABY!

Here are some of the in-conference defensive stats along with Division I rank (in parentheses) , from StatSheet:

  MICHIGAN FLORIDA
Pts Per Game 65.7 (119)    54.3 (6)
Poss Per Game 64.1 (98)    62.6 (55)
Pts Per Poss 1.02 (146)    0.87 (7)
Floor Pct 51.8 (199)    45.6 (10)
FG Pct 42.9 (146)    37.7 (11)
FT Pct 68.6 (138)    64.2 (19)
3pt FG Pct 34.4 (170)    27.3 (3)
Effective FG Pct 49 (164)    42.2 (8)
Off Rebs Per Game 11.3 (213)    10.4 (140)
Off Reb Pct 32.8 (217)    29.6 (94)
Def Rebs Per Game 23.1 (154)    21.5 (75)
Def Reb Pct 69.3 (189)    70 (210)
Steal Pct 7.5 (15)    9.5 (149)
Block Pct 5.7 (115)    5.2 (72)

It's Big Ten vs. SEC here, of course, so take these for what they are worth when it comes to a meaningful comparison, but I still like the matchup defensively if we consider the competition against which these numbers were amassed. I don't know if Florida does quite this well against us defensively as they struggle against good guard play. The Gators have also occasionally shown themselves to be turnover-prone, so some steals and easy baskets seem to be key as well.

One thing that should play significantly in our favor, that isn't represented in any of the stats in this thread, is our ability to play a clean game (in a physical conference, no less) and limit fouls. FT% is all well and good, but it's really actual FT attempts that could loom large in a game where everything else looks so close.
