TCU Fans Sticking It To OSU Fans

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on
Taking a page out of the MSU playbill, billboards congratulating TCU on its Rose Bowl win (signed Little Sisters of the Poor) have popped up around Columbus.

This is why school presidents need to be seen, not heard, in the sports arena.

If anyone sees something new on the front page, can they inform everyone so we can find a way to read it during the work day?  I can't access the main page and would have to find someone with an iPhone to read it.  Most normal people would wait until this evening to check from home but I am clearly not a normal person.

Funny I guess. I like how people have ridiculously misinterpretted that guy's reasoning. The debate is not whether teams like TCU can beat good teams in a bowl game -- that much has been proven. The debate is whether strength of schedule means even good teams deserve to make the bowl.

For instance, in the NCAA tournament last year, Butler made it farther than Kansas or Kentucky, and thus could be considered the "better team" by the same standards that TCU is better than the Big 10. But if the NCAA tournament had only 2 spots (like a bowl game), how on earth could anybody justify putting Butler in over Kansas or Kentucky? Same reasoning applies to football bowls.

If there is no playoff system, which there is not at this time, how do you suggest that is done? The OSU president was not debating playoff system vs. bowl system -- he was working within the confines of the system already in place. With the current system, I do think SoS should be extremely important. There are already way too many tomato can games scheduled, and if you can "get up" for 1 or 2 marquee games a year and 10 tomato cans and still make the Rose Bowl why on earth would there be any incentive to test yourself week in and week out. If Alabama has TCU's schedule they're undefeated and Rose Bowl champs instead of a 3-loss team.

I propose it not be done.  Why give an air of legitimacy to a system that can't honestly pick a champion in most years?  Just go back to the old poll system, let the teams play who they may and crown a "mythical national champion."  If you can't decide a champion properly, don't pretend you can.

This question isn't really what Alabama would have done against TCU's schedule, but rather what would TCU have done against Auburn's?  And that's an answer you can't know.

I think most people that are familiar with the bowl system vs. playoff argument understand what the OSU president was saying.  I think the point of the billboard is that the guy should have just kept his mouth shut.  It was clearly not his place to open his yapper and this is just a little more fallout from that mistake in judgment.

This is asshole-ish but fuck them. I couldn't agree more when Jim Delany says that there's only so much those non-BCS schools can push for without the big leagues taking their balls and going home.

Screw the smaller schools. If they perform well enough to earn a spot in a BCS conference and have their act together (academics, passionate following, etc.), let them get an invite to join a la TCU. I feel no sympathy for Boise. "Hey Boise President, quit stumping in the media and convince your state legislature to give you funding to become more than a glorified community college."

To have to constantly listen to complaining and fight pressure from these schools that haven't created or invested anything is absurd to me. While Gordon Gee's comments were condescending, simpleton and totally un-PC, I completely agree with his sentiment. A Big Ten or SEC schedule is much different than a WAC or MWC schedule.

While nobody likes to see the 5th grade bully beat up the 3rd grader, if the 3rd grader keeps poking him in the back of the head and calling him douchebag, maybe a wedgie is due.

That kind of goes right back to my original point . . . Everyone has their opinions on how the BCS should work and the OSU president should have known better than to weigh in publically with his own personal view.  First, no one cares what he has to say except the people who are in agreement.  Second, his public statement was in no way going to have any effect on the outcome.  It was just dumb and I think he would admit the same.

I can agree with that: his comment was dumb, unnecessary, and, regardless of whether it is correct or not, was obviously going to get shredded by the media. I do agree and am fairly confident he'll be keeping his mouth shut. He shouldn't have made the comment.

On the other hand, I completely support his viewpoint and opinion. I also enjoyed a university president having enough balls to say what most of us are thinking. If TCU or Boise were to get a BCS invite over an 11-1 Michigan, I think most of us would be saying the exact same thing as Gordon Gee.

You know what would happen if the "big leagues take their balls and go home"?  Think of 12 game schedules with no cupcakes.  How much more frequently do powerhouse programs slip below .500?  How would the programs who depend on 7 or 8 home games each year manage that when they can only schedule each other?  Historic expectations might as well get thrown out the window.  College football becomes what many say it already is, simply a minor league system to the NFL.

College football needs more than the 67 teams that will be in BCS conferences next year.  If the BCS conferences continue to separate further from the non-BCS conferences, it isn't good for anybody.

I hate to stick up for OSU but....

I think what the OSU AD was saying is that while these teams can go out an win 1 big game every year and brag about it, they don't have to tredge through a schedule where they have to play a Wisconsin like team every week. The question was, and still is, what if TCU had to go play Iowa or OSU the next Saturday?

I'm not sure that logic applies as well to bowl games.  It isn't like TCU caught Wisconsin between Michigan State and Ohio State.  Wisconsin got the chance to rest and game-plan for weeks, which sorta negates the argument that TCU could have just caught Wisconsin napping, jumped on a team with other games on its mind, or took advantage of a team that was beat up from conference play.

Besides, after watching TCU this year, I think they could have hung in the Big Ten, even if they had to play a full conference schedule.  They play as close to Big Ten style football as you'll see out west... except for Stanford.

I largely agree with your synopsis, but I am also a bit tired of the whole "in our conference, you play an elite team every week" argument that we hear.  Sure, in the B10 or the SEC you might have to play two or three ranked teams in short succession, but you also have weeks where a team plays Indiana-Vandy-Purdue followed by a major cupcake.  On the whole teams plays more elite teams in the bigger conferences, but as we saw this year with MSU, sometimes you can plow through a season with some luck and playing opponents at the best possible moments for you despite being profoundly average.

Agreed having three or four tough games vs. one or two doesn't make that much difference in the long run.  This TCU doesn't play anyone argument is stupid.  By the way the same argument was used against OSU and USC during their national championship years by Big XII/SEC guys almost constantly, it was irritating then and it's irritating now.

hilarioius... I also think it would be funny if someone did that to us.  Sense of humor is great... along with a little trash talking... it's harmless.

I'm not debating whether or not a TCU program could last in the B10.  Who knows.. no one really does... but that's a pretty shot using what they can.

but in combination with the MSU billboard, it's pricelss. Any word on if the MSU - Wisconsin billboards are still up on I-94? Boy did that turn around to bit the Spartans in the ass. Big Ten Champs? See: Capital One Bowl.
