Taysom Hill to Michigan?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Brian and Ace on MGoRadio talked about the possibility of byu injured QB Taysom Hill transferring to Michigan.

it starts at 04:11 of segment 6.

if you can't listen to it, basically they're saying it's possible and that they've heard things themselves from people out in Provo on top of reading things on the pay sites about it being in motion.

Well, if true, welcome addition, but others have made the point about it influencing recruiting and such.  Also 9 billion QB's on the roster seems a bit much.

Instant upgrade at the QB position if we can get him, though.  If he can't stay healthy then we'll still have OKorn and maybe Morris will be in the mix as well.

  1. Even though he's injury prone, there is a massive up side.
  2. It gives one more year for Harbaugh to more fully develop "his" own QB recruits.
  3. As others have said, we are bound to get 1-2 QBs leaving the squad.  Folks who have been unable to prove themselves as starters over the course of 2-3 years had their shot and may see the writing on the wall.
  4. Tranfserring in another 5th year grad transfer hopefully won't happen EVERY year, but it is a good roster management/treading water move for a year or two.
  5. Just becasue we are looking at bringing in Hill, it doesn't mean we are DOOMED for all the other options at QB.  It's been a long time since we had a game-breaker type of QB with accurate passing skills.  It's entirely possible that Harbaugh's approach is "guilty until proven innocent" until he is 100% sure he can identify a solid 2 QBs that will be his guys over the next 2-4 years.  He's had 1 spring session & 1 summer camp to evaluate his players and all of them have only had his playbook for less than a year.  It's possible he's *almost* there, but just wants to make sure.  That is, his normal QB scholarship players may eventually dwindle down to about 5-6 per roster, but until he finds the next 2 solid guys in the pipeline, he's going to stack the deck a bit extra until he knows that  the needs of the next 3-4 years can be addressed with the 5-6 guys he does have.

Kinda off the subject, but it does have to do with recruiting/open roster spots:  Rivals has removed Dele Harding from their 2016 Michigan commit list.  Anyone heard anything about this?  Has he finally decommited from the Maize and Blue?

Yes that school was a "feel good story" but I'm not sure kids there are really learning how to play football - due in part I'm sure to their very abbreviated schedule.
I'm for laying off recruiting the Football Academy awhile.

I know the saying that if you have two QBs you have none, but if Hill to Michigan actually comes to pass, this might be a situation where it would be smart to alternate at the QB position.  While not a statute by any means, O'Korn looks like a more traditional pro-style QB.  Hill gives you a nice change of pace.  Plus, playing Hill only half the time decreases the chance he will get hurt.  It also has the advantage of developing O'Korn with him being the most likely candidate to start in 2017.

I just meant has anyone heard if he finally made it official today that he wasn't commited anymore.  I knew he would more than likey end up somewhere else.

At some point, we want a multi year starter. Even if a team is 10% better one year with a senior QB, the program is better off with the multi-year starter.  Andrew Luck wouldnt have been nearly as good his junior year if Stanford was rolling out one year grad transfers every season before him b/c they were slightly more productive.

Most years, I would agree, but not 2016.  We will have talented juniors and seniors everywhere.  It will be our most experienced team since -- 2006?  After that, a talent dropoff is coming when all of the recruiting misses of 2014 and 2015 start to take their toll.  We need to win next year and we need to win big.  We can start over with our multiyear starter in 2017, when we probaby aren't going to compete nationally anyways.

That would be awesome, but why would a Mormon guy this late in his career flip to UM?  I guess in Mangum beats him out, but I'd assume BYU would want to give Hill a chance to succeed and then have another year on Mangum/solid backup versus just going with one.

but knee injury, broken leg, and Lisfranc fracture don't bode well for him surviving the season. Even should both Morris and Speight depart, I'd rather just focus on O'Korn, Gentry, and Malzone (assuming Peters redshirts).

IF and WHEN Morris, Speight (or whoever) transfer THEN I'd devote another schollie to another QB. Bringing in an 8th Scholarship QB in an offort to force others to transfer is NOT the Michigan way...unless we want to start seeing more Pipkins-type accusations from people that aren't being offered "Medical" waivers.

Let's sum up some of the mike droppers people have used here alreaady:

Full stop, End of Story. No brainer. Nuff Said...

I thought the injury he suffered this year is one that tends to be very difficult to come back from. He's not all that far into his recovery, so if we agree to take him it's with the hope that he is the same player next year AND beats out all the other QBs. I guess it's possible but seems pretty far fetched.

Plus I know football isn't about being nice, but I can't imagine it will make our current guys / future recruits happy to know that we're always looking for the 1 year guys come in and take the job from those who have been with Michigan since the beginning. Personally I'm excited to see what OKorn and the redshirt freshman can do.

Harbaugh actually signed him at Stanford, but he decided to go to BYU instead when Stanford wouldn't let him enroll early after he returned from his Mormon mission.

I didn't read through all 200+ posts, so forgive me if someone else brought this up. In re: scholarship limits -- what if Hill were to walk-on, and thus not take up a scholarship?

Some Rick Dunaway idiot is all over Twitter saying this actually happened today. He is the one who says were getting commitments every day. Strange guy, to say the least.

He looked awesome for Houston.  Gentry would be a potential beast.  All we really need is a Quarterback who can see/use/pass to the whole field.  Our Defense is going to be really good year in year out.

who's missed two of the last three seasons due to serious leg injuries, but is supposed to be interested in a guy who's missed most of the last two seasons due to serious leg injuries.

Sounds legit.

I could see hill being a change of pace QB. I think Harbaugh sees our lack of explosive players on offense and is trying to find that type of player. Next year 'could' be a special year if we find some explosive/burner type players.

We're all seeing what happens when the QB play is weak. If the cost of getting Hill is one scholarship for one year, I think it is worth it. He might not be healthy, and it does prevent another recruit from getting into the system, but there is just such a need for an immediate impact at QB.

Also, I bet a number of college athletes (especially those recruited by Jim Harbaugh) don't think like a normal person. While most people would feel insulted/threatened by a grad transfer, some individuals out there would see it as another competitor to beat. I don't think this chases away a lot of top recruits. They believe they can be the guy, no matter who stands in their way.

I'm actually comfortable with the future. Next year QB will not be a weakness. O'Korn, Gentry, Peters, Malzone, and I would love to see Speight play an entire quarter with starters this year. I believe Morris Will be gone to transfer.
