This could just be me being biased, but anyone else think that this is just two Buckeye fans trying to do everything they can to make sure a Michigan player's draft stock falls as far as possible?

Well, if they filed a false police report and then lie in court, that's a new high watermark for trolling.

Honestly, Lewan is kind of a hothead by all accounts, and it sounds like he responded to some goading by OSU fans.  That doesn't mean he didn't have a good reason, but if you hit someone in a bar you have to expect that there will be legal ramifications.  This may prove to be false in the end, but it does sound from a number of sources that something happened and Lewan was involved.

...but wasn't part of the original complaint by these Buckeye fans (that surfaced on the internet) some months ago that the AAPD officer on the scene basically covered for Lewan?  Apparently there was some effort at a cover up, the case was to be reveiwed higher up the command line and thus the reason for the 4-month delay in charges being filed.

The officers were explaining that it's a pain in the ass to drive all the way back up to Ann Arbor for the court appearances if you want to go through with pressing charges. It is a valid consideration.

Mgoblog turns on the players a little too quickly for my liking. If he's guilty, let's comment more at that time. He definitely doesn't have the high character I would expect out of a captain, but I don't see the point in calling him a douchebag...etc. at this point. He's gone, and that should be enough. I personally have wanted to punch several Ohio state fans before, so I can understand that aspect.

How many senior team captains do you know of, who the evening of a loss, are standing behind the bar at the Heidelberg pouring drinks and being a total asshole? The whole thing was live tweeted.

This kid has a lot of growing up to do, and that was true even before these charges were filed. We should be able to recognize that as a fanbase.

Sorry that's new information to me. I didn't know about that. That is pretty upsetting. I am by no means saying he is a good guy either. Ultimately he hurt himself worse than anyone, and he's no longer on Michigan's team, so I don't know what we should do...if I said let's grab the pitchforks and torches would that be better?

Yeah I agree. Not advocating violence but no one was saying these things while he was playing for us. This incident didn't happen just recently, it's been a while. I'm not going to comment on his character because I don't know him, I'm just disappointed that he got himself into this situation and shed a negative light on the university.

Yep, that's one of our senior captains right there.

Taylor has set plenty of examples during his career. Almost all of them were bad. Get your shit together, Lewan.

I'm remembering Josh Furman right now.  Charged by the Washtenaw County Proscutor with domestic violence, assault and battery and illegal entry, and found not guilty on all counts.

Too bad Gibbons didn't go to trial.

Does anybody else think that the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office was feeling r-e-a-l-l-y chapped about all of the press surrounding Gibbons and Lewan?

Buckeye fans went in looking to bait him, and he took it. That's what he's guilty of. I doubt there are too many credible (not to mention sober) witnesses who will have anything to say about this. I bet he gets off scot free.

I like to look at athletes as just that. People that are playing a sport. Other than that they are just human. I have never met Taylor so I won't comment on him. I just hope in situations like this the truth is found and things are handled appropriately. It sucks that it's a michigan athlete but I just don't put off the field expectations on them.
People make mistakes and hopefully they can grow and heal from it.

The guy really has a lot of growing up to do. He came back to win a big ten championship, but he didn't seem to help the team as a leader at all.

And the whole rape thing, man. Hard to respect him anymore.

The issues are also an indictment of our coaching staff. I don't care if they are adults. Kids act better when they fear their coach and don't want to disappoint.

Just another reason Brady is on the hot seat

You think those kids don't fear Nick Saban?

They have more issues than we do...WTF are you talking about?

Name one coach in the COUNTRY who kids fear and they don't have issue off-field issues.

Name ONE. And Service Academies don't count.

Don't worry...I'll wait.

I know it was a different era, but I'm currently reading Bo's Lasting Lessons and Ifrom what I've read I wouldve been suprised to see this kind of a thing happen when Bo was coach. He suspended his kicker for 2 games (one of them against OSU) just for being in a bar for like 15 minutes on a Thursday night...

I would like to see the same no BS attitude from Hoke. He seemed like he has that mindset at first, with the Toussaint suspension, and his no-visit recruiting policy. But after the Gibbons thing, and this, and the way recruiting kids has changed, I feel like Hoke has let people them him what to do, rather than leading the way he wants to. I hope he can find his way again. I liked him a lot more when he first started out and he was making decisions for himself, now he seems like a bit of a puppet

It's not the same world. If Hoke said that players weren't allowed to go to bars on Thursday nights and word trickled down that you couldn't have any fun at Michigan, we wouldn't be able to recruit.

This stuff happens everywhere. And all the "Everything was better when Bo was here" gets old. Yes, he was a great coach, won lots of games, etc. But he never won a national championship and didn't have a great bowl record, so he's not untouchable. Add to that the fact that he last coached college football about 25 years ago, and it's just not all that relevant anymore.

makes no sense. He wasn't here and it was up to Rich Rod to take care of the situation. No coach would come in and assess every discipline issue and tell players they were not disciplined enough. Brady Hoke has dealt with the situations that happened while he was coach and that's what he should be judged on.

every coach has issues with kids doing stupid shit, because they are kids. Carr had kids cause trouble, I'm sure Bo probably did too.

hoke is on a hot seat for not winning, not because he has a couple kids accused of crimes

bronxblue

March 20th, 2014 at 2:58 PM ^

Ah yes, because kids who fear their superiors NEVER act out?

This has nothing to do with the coaching staff.  It does have to do with college kids drinking and getting into fights.  I'm guessing Lewan is not the only student at UM to get into a fight this year after drinking a bit too much, and I'm fairly certain none of them are as big a public target.

that criminal issues are being investigated and followed through on.  Other schools and police departments cover it up and let sports stars get away with many things.  If he did it, he should face a penalty.  The younger players see this and hopefully learn a thing or two.

I know what you are saying....I wasn't really talking about the Gibbons thing, because that is very stange....  More Frank Clark, Taylor Lewan, and the guy who jumped over the car (was it Big Will?) .  Some schools let their players get away with EVERYTHING and I'm glad that it seems the police in Ann Arbor and prosecutors actually investigate complaints against players.

Interesting.  I wonder how this works.  What if somebody said that overall, you seem like a piece of shit?  Not that I would write that.  It's only a hypothetical.  I'm just curious about what happens in that event.

"What if somebody said that overall, you seem like a piece of shit?"

I would honestly consider their opinion, and if they were right actively work to change myself.

There have been a few times in my life I would have benefitted from someone honestly telling me how shitty I was being.
