Tate's TD run against purdue was the first time all season that I had been fooled by a ball fake. This made me realize that Tate has not been very good with his ball fakes. It seems that every time Tate hands the ball off, he watches what happens with the running back and casually jogs the other direction, and when he keeps it he only holds it out for a second before pulling it down again. A lot of times it seems like the only reason we gain positive yards on a zone read are either Minor bringing the pain to some fool or Tate making Darius Fleming lose his jock strap, not because the exchange held any defenders at all.
Juice Williams showed us how much more effective the zone read is when you master the ninja ball fake. Hell, even the Dual Threet was able to pull of some nifty runs last year thanks to his ball fake. If there was one thing Threet did better than Tate besides being tall and missing open receivers, it was his ball fakes.
Am I crazy or does this seem to be the case?
Feel free to make as many "quality ball touches" jokes.
