Tate texting sideline reporter before the game

Submitted by tomhagan on
According to her pre-game report, Tate texted her before the game about the weather. He also texted other national media members during the week. This is quite unusual for a Michigan QB, particularly a freshman. Thoughts on this?

I'm gonna go on a limb and say that he probably doesn't have a particularly big head after being benched for the potential game winning drive. Also, I agree with a post below that it won't take long until reporters start fishing for controversial quotes from him. He ought to have his brother help him manage the media.

if I were a Frosh Michigan QB it would take more then Holly Rowe for me to text before the game. Now if it were Erin Andrews, she'd always know what the weather is like from me.

Yeah, I was going to bring this up. Why is he texting Forde to take blame for the MSU loss or discussing the weather with ABC sideline reporters? I love the guy but I think RR needs to get him on a tighter leash.

remember that anyone under 20 has been texting for at least 4 years or since they got a cell phone... I saw some 8 year olds texting the other day

On the bright side, at least RR can trust Tate to communicate coherently with reporters. Tressel has to keep Pryor in a cage; otherwise he talks about everybody stealing and murdering.

I thought it was a little weird when I heard that mentioned in the game, and I don't really know what I think of it now. I mean, who knows. It's probably not a huge deal but it just strikes me as, well, odd at least. I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, but it strikes me as a bit prima-donna-ish for a freshman to be texting reporters. This sounds like something pro athletes would do... I'm even thinking of pro athletes along the lines of Terrel Owens. As long as it doesn't become a regular thing that Tate's texting the media on game days, as long as this is an isolated incident, I don't think it's a big deal. As another poster pointed out, there's a lot of spare time on game day if the game's at night. So, bottom line... alittle weird, yes, but not a big deal if it doesn't set a precedent. And I don't think it will. EDIT: I think what bothers me about this isn't that he took time to speak to the media before the game, but the format in which it occured. If he's texting, this sideline reporter has his cell number. If she has it, other media personalities no doubt have it as well. That means a lot of media has unfettered, 24/7 access to him. Given the media's lack of respect for personal boundaries, and that being a student athlete is such a taxing and time intensive way of life, it just seems like this only has potential to be a distraction. That's not just a concern as far as his performance on field, but his well-being as a person. These kids are stretched so thin to begin with, that when you put more distractions on their plate, adding other things to it can't be helpful. Hopefully Jason and the coaching staff are helping him manage things like this.

why do you guys care if he texts the weather? if hes staying relaxed and keeping loose then good. He doesnt need to be wound up and kept on some leash hes not a dog. Its 2009 not 1969. Let em text when i played for michigan id text players from the other team at INT. of games because we were bored and needed to stay loose. unless you have played at a high level dont even think you know what its like.

whatever All Star...if you are going to make claims of "when I played for Michigan", you smell like BS unless you man-up with your name and details...otherwise you are just some BS punk on the internet spewing "unless you played at a high level"
