I hope he can take care of business and return to a 4-year school to finish his degree, whether it's at UM or somewhere else and whether he plays football or not.

OK, probably too far down to get a response, but definitely does not deserve a thread.

What happens to Tate's NCAA eligibility should he spend a year in CC? What I think I know is that a student-athlete has five years to complete four of competition. So he could be gone for three full semesters and still only be a redshirt junior, correct? Or if it's not, can someone fill me in?

...in saying that it's 5 years to play 4 however, for D-1 purposes, your "clock" is continuously ticking. He's been enrolled full-time for 4 semesters at UM...if he goes to a juco for 3 semesters, he would only have 3 semeters left but he probably will only have 1 year left to play unless he appeals the NCAA for an extension.

Essentially he will take a redshirt year. It'll be just as if he redshirted a season, only without the practicing. This kind of thing happens at UVA all the damn time. Practically every year. Some of them choose the CC-then-reapply route and some just transfer. If he follows through on everything he'll come back in 2012 with two years of eligibility.

Is this the result of him wanting to come back or being inelible to transfer to another D-I school in his current academic state? Is it even clear that the destination community college is in MI?

Does anyone know how this might affect is status with the NCAA in regards to progress towards degree completion? That is usually one of the reasons we do not take JC transfers and I'm wondering if this could prevent him from returning.

With the "new" climate around the school, I have a feeling the admissions office will start cooperating with the football team again instead of looking for excuses to reject football players.

The admissions office has nothing against football players, I can assure you.  Dorsey and Kinard simply didn't have the grades or test scores to get in, and while that is unfortunate, those are the rules.  If anything, that falls on RR for putting the kids and the admissions office in such a difficult position.

on the FB field...if he applies the same to his education, he'll be fine.  Only difference is football is easy to get motivated for...gotta dig deeper and realize how important the education is, then man up.  He can do this.

Study hard at the community college!  I wonder which one? WCC?  Best of luck! I think students at CC have to get a 3.0 or higher to be admitted at the UM.
