Support for Brian and for Hoke

I think everyone out there who is up in arms about Brian's response to the Hoke hire needs to step back and take a deep breath.

Brady Hoke became the next coach at Michigan only two days ago now. I know that when I first heard the news I was less than thrilled. But since that time I have really warmed up to him, and now I'm all in. But for others it may take more time.

More importantly, we all need to realize that Brian is entitled to his opinion on this matter. That guy works tirelessly to make this the best blog of any kind that I have ever been a part of. And guess what? I get to log on to this site and be a part of it for FREE! So despite my disagreement with Brian's perspective at the moment, I'm still all in for him and this blog as well.

I know that the Michigan fan base needs to be united in order for the program to be successful. And it is my hope that Brian eventually warms up to Brady Hoke. But the one thing I will never question is that Brian is ALL IN FOR MICHIGAN. Michigan is that guy's life. And this blog is the product of that.

To Brian, I'm sure my vote of confidence doesn't mean much, as you've no doubt developed tough skin over your time running this site. But most of us are still behind you. So keep up the good work that we get to enjoy every day.

Go Blue!

youre probably right and for that i apologize. but all i have been seeing around here is a bunch of complaints about the very person who runs this crazy show.

i have rarely, if ever, heard brian call out a particular poster in a negative way. so IMO, we should not be slamming him with all these negative posts.

if i were him i would shut this baby down for a couple days and see how everyone reacts.

i, for one, would have a hole in my soul without mgoblog. regardless of what brian is putting out there.

I totally agree... Brian is entitled to his opinion of which I agree with. He isn't saying Hoke can't win games. He actually said the opposite.  He will win games and get around 9 wins a season just like Lloyd and go to BCS games and struggle.  My guess is 75% of Michigan fans would be happy with that, just to get back to the old ways.  Brian, and myself, were in the boat hoping for a home run hire on the national championship level as opposed to a Big Ten title once every 4 years.

Time will tell but he is using facts for his critiques so you can't just blindly call him wrong when facts support a lot more than saying "that school in Ohio".  Rah rah speeches are good but we have to wait until we see them play on the field to know what we have.

His record may not be the best and Hoke may do well here, but he is a class act.  I liked the way he thanked his players and how emotional he got, he cares about the kids as RR did as well.  He thanked RR which was nice to see.

The big thing is he has no ego.  He is confident, but he had no problems telling people this was his dream job and he was willing to walk here.  Also, I went back and watched SDSU's bowl game.  He coaches the line and follows orders from the DC about what to emphasize with the line during a game.  You can see that when the offense had the ball during one series, he was over talking to the d -line.

Will he be successful, I hope so.

How can he so confidently predict that we'll win Big ten championships, but be unable to compete at the NC level? Look at the teams that have won the big ten over the past 10 years, and think about how many of them either went to the NC, or were borderline NC teams. The difference between these two is very small, and to predict that we'll win big ten championships with some regularity, and not compete for NCs is sort of absurd to me.

We all need to get behind coach hoke, and give him a fair shake. We saw with Rodriguez what happens when coaches are judged too quickly. Let's not repeat the mistakes that were made by the freep on this board.

Man, in the last 48 hours it has felt like if you have any reservations about Brady Hoke you aren't supporting your coach... it's like being told you "don't support the troops" or something.

Brian was absolutely roasted on WTKA for saying that Hoke would win Big Ten championships but struggle in bowl games, just like Carr and even Bo.  Yet even for that he was killed on the radio.

It's like if you don't say that Brady Hoke will win consecutive National Championships until he actually becomes the trophy itself you aren't supporting Michigan.  I think Hoke is a good hire and he will do well.  Not a great hire and he will do great.  But he is good, and he could be better than that, we don't know.  Please don't hurt me for that...

Hoke comes in with a losing record, one bowl win, and no experience at an auto-qualifier, and 1(!) win over a BCS school in the past four years, Indiana....

RR came in with lots of wins, was a game away from playing for the national title and all the hype in the world, but inherited a bad situation and had 'factions' against him from day one.

Hoke got up there and played to the masses, and everyone lapped it up. He used those key phrases like 'that school to the south' and we all felt tingly things, but I will not blindly support a coach that lacks the credentials just because he was a D-line coach here for severn years and knows the words to The Victors.

I really hope that I am wrong about him, but 8-9 wins a year is what we are going back to, and I hope everyone is happy being handcuffed to Lloyd ball for the next half decade or so...

If, and hopefully when I am wrong, I'll host a CIL for me eating my words.

And here is a cat picture to enhance my disagreement

Because if any of us are a little leery about a FBS coach with a losing record, and (at least in my case) far more upset about how DB handled the coach search than the end result, it's because Brian said so right? Hokemania is so awesome that the only possible way to disagree with it is brainwashing from our fearless leader?

Hoke might do great, he might do poorly, it's just a big risk. On top of that, DB destroyed our recruiting class and really hurt our national image with how he handled this search. Not to mention this godawful "Michigan Man" meme that needs to die miserably. If it's true that DB didn't even contact Gary Patterson, well, he doesn't deserve to hold the job of AD.

Let people have their opinions, the difference between us being worried about the hiring is that, at the end of the day, we're still going to support our coach instead of trying to dig up dirt on him and root against the team in hopes that he's ousted faster.

Let me ask you this, did you vote for bush or obama?  if you didnt, did you think the same way and since he is your president did you support him?  This is the same.  In elections a person has no control over who get elected and when it isnt the guy he/she voted for he/she usually doesnt support him, so why shouldnt it apply here?

Do I support Hoke? - yes.

Do I think it was a good hire? - emotions, aside, it remains to be seen. I thought RR was a tremendous hire also. I supported him, but I also think he may have, at least initially, placed himself above traditions which many consider sacrosant. I was not particularly fond of that, but I was willing to roll with it because I thought he could win. He may not have been given the time, I'll give him that.

Will we be relevant again? - when did we stop being relevant? Oh, you mean will we win? Yes, I believe we will win.

More to your point - it is a different set of circumstances. Unlike a presidential election, what choice did/do I have? I was not consulted, had no voice in the decision, and furthermore, because I was removed from the process, I am woefully ill prepared to second guess DB. Do I support the president (coach), yes, but I may not agree with him philosophically. More importantly, I support my country (school) more, if that makes any sense.

I agree with you. Unless they can pass, catch, kick, block, tackle, etc., I do not believe they can directly affect the week to week results. However, if they become a distraction and indeed, as you say, make life intolerable for both players and coaches, how long before that negativity works its way into the recruiting pipeline and affects how prospective recruits view the program? I happen to believe that players make a system, and not necessarily the other way around. There is a reason recruits are assigned stars. Would a program where the lack of institutional (alum base) support is pervasive be attractive to you if you were a premium recruit? Just saying.

A lot of people do care about that. Football is an emotional game. You have to be passionate about it to be great. People like seeing passion. Football games can swing in a flash and all it takes sometimes is a passionate speech from a coach to grab the momentum. Players like that. They react to that. It's why an unranked team can beat a top 10 team--because they had passion for the game and put their heart into it.
