It's either him standing with his arm folded like people actually care that he's there or banging the cow bell. I have Phila. Eagles season tickets and there are plenty of fans that get dressed up for the game that are way more douchey than he is. For some reason he just really irks me.

Let me preface (total neg-dodge) this with yes, I agree with Dex, Brodie, et al., that Superfan's post-MSU post-mortem post was over the top. It was, after all, a genuine rant.* Parents, help me out here: when a child goes off on a rant, do you:
  1. Listen carefully to the argument your child is making
  2. Pay no attention to the actual words, and focus on what could be making the child overreact
My guess - and this is just from remembrance of childhood - is that it's (2). By ranting, the point the ranter is trying to make is not the laundry list of complaints actually being uttered, but that some impetus has driven the child to spew forth in shouting tones (or caps-locked blogging). What was the impetus here? Losing to Michigan State. Is losing to Michigan State a rant-worthy impetus? If you live here, then yes, I think it's worth a rant. I would recommend conducting said rant among friends, or better yet, in a personal diary. But it's not like sharing it with the public is useless. Mr. Superfan is irate. He wants it to be known that he is irate. That is ALL that should be taken from his rant. And I hope it is taken. I hope that Rich Rodriguez realizes that this is a rivalry bigger for us in-staters than any on the schedule but the rivalry-that-is-as-important-as-the-rest-of-the-schedule-combined. Bo had to learn this, too. In some interview or other** that I first saw in the late '90s and has since been repeated on several M-centric BTN specials, he made mention of the fact that he lost to Michigan State his first year, and boy did he hear it from the Michigan faithful, and that made him respect that rivalry. If you consider last year a free pass, as Superfan notes he does in his blog, then consider this loss as Rich Rod's wake-up call to the importance of the Michigan State rivalry, at least to in-staters like me (and Superfan). That doesn't make ranting okay, by the way, or at least not on this forum. MGoBlog is no more the place for a rant than an open-house for your buddy's little brother where lots of your buddy's friends and family and family friends and buddy's fiance's friends are standing around trying to watch the Tigers and Lions (not to point any fingers) and converse about things like how sucky the rabbi is at temple.*** I don't have an opinion that much on Superfan, except I think a guy who wears batman mask and carries a cowbell and gets fans excited during Michigan games for 15 years or whatever -- even if only for self-serving reasons -- has earned the right to spout off on his own blog without everyone jumping on him. I wouldn't echo his sentiment, but his salient point, which is that RR probably needs to adjust how seriously he takes this game, is one that I think has some merit. * This 2006 column by William Safire is recommended reading for anyone using this term. ** It's the one where he's got a wide-brimmed hat on, and I think a yellow sweater and a beat-up leather jacket, and the inside of Michigan Stadium is in the background. *** I know you read this blog, asshole, and yes, I'm still pissed.

These are just the actions of a self-serving piece of crap. Its not about cheering for the team (he's usually standing silently with his arms crossed, like he observing an execution), it's about getting his obese mug on TV. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's all about Superfan. And doing something asinine for a long period of time doesn't give one greater degree of credibility.

See -- I agree with this. The guy shouldn't be criticized for not being a true fan because he rants about the coach. He obvoiusly is passionate about Michigan sports and he shows his support in every game. He has at least earned the benefit of the doubt, kinda long a long time winning coach who has one bad season.

What I have seen is a guy who dresses up and then leads the popular cowbell-based "Go Blue" cheer or tries to start the wave and pretty much does it no matter how good or bad the team is. Is that self-serving? As far as I can tell, he doesn't make any money off of what he does and few if any of us could identify the guy if we walked past him in the street. So what does he get out of it besides bragging that he's "Superfan"? It's just bravado and it looks like his act is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Big deal. Did the guy keep coming to basketball games through the dark years and did he show up for all the games last year? If so then I don't think that the guy deserves all of this vitriol. I have never met the guy so I can't comment on anything else that has been said.

Every Michigan game I go to I attend Superfan's tailgate and he is very accommodating and fun to be around. He's intense and this website shows that intensity. I know his rant was over the top and I do not agree with it; as my brother said: "It's a bit melodramatic". But he's still a good guy.

Following on Hemlock's train, I also have attended a number of tailgates with Superfan, and while I dont know him personally he has always came off as a good guy. Yes the rant was a bit much, maybe he was a having a bad day. Sadly he took his feelings on the net probably a bit too quickly, but these things do happen. I would caution everyone to remember that sometimes emotion gets out of hand and you write stuff you wish you could take back. I have made it a rule in my life never to write a nasty email to someone for just that reason. I figure I can usually give it time and things will often take care of themselves... Anyway, just remember most if not all of us have written things we sometimes regret on the net. Cut the guy some slack and try to chill out just a bit about the rantings of someone who loves Michigan football just like you... Aug '95

and I was extremely mad at the loss, but I know enough about football to realize that the loss is not solely on RR and I won't write him off because of it. There were numerous errors that happened during the game, errors by players who normally do not make these kinds of errors, as well as some of the "youth" showing up on our team. There were many very catchable balls dropped, even by guys like Koger who usually has excellent hands and concentration. There were also fumbles and running lanes missed by a few players. A lot of these things were just random things that can be explained by either a lack of concentration or a player just trying to do too much and be a "hero." An example of this is Stonum's fumble. You can't blame the kid's effort for trying to get the extra few yards near the goal line, but in doing so he fumbled the ball away. That was a huge play for State. But he made up for it with his long TD a bit later. As for the defense, we know there isn't much depth and some talent is missing at key positions. I think that guys get frustrated when things aren't going well and they try to play outside of their abilities and overrun plays or make a big hit, but forget to wrap up. These things happen when you're losing and you're trying to make a big play. I think we should realize that a lot of players were trying too hard, especially once MSU had a lead and time was winding down, and you tend to forget some of the basic fundamentals of the game. It was also the first road game of the season and we were missing key players forcing that depth issue to be a concern (i.e. Molk, Williams, Cissoko--benched.) Again, I was as mad as anyone at the loss, but to write off the coach after one loss is utterly ridiculous.

I hate the idea of a self-proclaimed "super fan" anyways. Though "not all fans are created equal," there most definitely shouldn't be such a self-admiring position like "super fan."

he's never seen a Michigan team go into East Lansing and play relatively poor before, and Michigan State play about 3 notches above themselves.........that never happens.

Was that he said that MSU was the most important game to win this year? Really? I think I'd rather beat Iowa, Wisconsin, PSU, Ohio State and ND over MSU. Beating MSU does nothing for Michigan's reputation (losing to them sucks and makes us look stupid). All streaks have to come to an end and the MSU streak since the 60's was another one that would eventually fall. It's absurd to think that a streak like that will never be broken or that when it is that said coach "doesn't get it". There is one game that I want to win more than any other every year and it is the Ohio State University.

DesHow21

October 7th, 2009 at 4:12 PM ^

Beating MSU does not preclude winning against OSU. I sort of see what that superfan dude was trying to say. Our guys simply did not have the intensity and part of that responsibility is the HC's. I didn't see a single play (trickeration or scheming wise) that we didn't see before. He went way overboard and sounded melodramatic, but I don't think you can absolve the HC of all responsibility for the loss. The fact that he had put it on his "superfan" site is what makes him a dick.

M-Wolverine

October 7th, 2009 at 11:12 PM ^

that ALL the streaks came in an end in a year's time... RIMSHOT! But seriously, I think, at least with the most important game point I see what he's saying. Yes, OSU would be a bigger win...but not very likely to happen. I was really looking at MSU as the key game of the season. Go 5-0, take no flax, have no "decline streak" or anything if you lose to Iowa...then the Hawkeyes are probably the least cried about loss in recent memory. Beat Del St 6-1, mostly in a bowl, with Ill, Purdue, and maybe Wiskey to boost the record to 7, 8 or 9, and the option of possibly pulling the upset on PSU or OSU. Overachieving, beat 2 out of 3 major rivals, go to a decent Bowl, take back control of the State. I get what you're saying that a win over Iowa, PSU or Wisconsin does more for you...but you can't "not win" without that being a loss. And a loss to MSU this year is bad. As anyone in the State of Michigan can attest too. There's so much crap that has to be put up with currently, that I won't list hear because you know all too well yourself, that it elevated this game, at least temporarily. You don't want to 0-2 vs. any major rivals. And Dantonio...? Ugh. People were expecting a split these two games. But just expecting (and hoping) it was beat MSU and lose understandably to Iowa on the road at night. There was only one other time I can think MSU was more important than Notre Dame (and that one year it WAS more important than OSU even) - 2002. And that beat down was everything we needed and wanted. And while not manned to the level to smoke anybody, I think people were looking at least wanting to WIN the game to those near levels. (And yes, the rest is over the top, but then I might have spouted off the same dumb stuff if I had posted something somewhere immediately after the game...of course, I was smart enough not to for 24 hours...)

Man oh man, perusing that literary godsend was like unearthing a fossilized skeleton of Homo eroticus: "GOD THERE IS NOTHING THAT I LOVE BETTER THAN A HARD... DOM...!" "HOLY CRAP! THAT WAS SUCH A GREAT DAMN HIT THAT I WENT NUTS AND STOPPED PAYING ATTENTION TO BREAST[s]...!" "THAT WAS AN OUTSTANDING[,] SLOBBER[y] ... C ... OCK!!!" "YOU BETTER STRAP IT UP AND COME HARD!" "I'M SICK OF ... BUSH" "I'M ... GOING CRAZY ...BLOW[ing] A ... COACH...!" Well, I just couldn't resist. Honestly I've got nothing against this guy. So he's a bit hyper? Big deal. Those who take serious offense... how do you really distinguish yourselves? Certainly not by zeal, but by prejudice. Doesn't mean we can't have a good laugh at his expense.

This guy is an extreme d-bag. I would expect an unnecessary rant from a 10 year but from a man in his 40's? who probably can't walk to his mailbox without getting winded is just really annoying. These kids work their asses off to become better players everyday and it's definitely not because they are worried about pleasing this cock head. Yeah, I get mad at games too sometimes, it sucks to lose always will, but calm down. This whole superfan title is really stupid as well. But on a positive note, it was pretty funny reading all the comments on here.

This guy makes the Unibomber and Chucky Manson seem like rational human beings. Its not like we lost to a shitty Toledo team, damn. State was supposed to be a pretty good team. We had our chances. Could have gone our way even with the negs. The D only let up 20 in regulation. The fucked up fake punt on the 15. The fumble in the redzone in the 4th. The 459 yard drive in the 1st quarter in which we gave up 3rd and 15+ several times where Sparty had 12 minutes of possession. If you told me M would be 4-1 after 5 last December I would have given my left nut. Coach Rod is doing a great job, look out Big 10 here we come.

Anybody else want to make a lame attempt to play on the guy's nickname? These all appeared in this thread: Superfan = Superdick Superfan? More like $uperfan Super turd Superfan? More like Super bandwagon-jumper I mean, come on, people...many of us went to Michigan. I thought we'd be better than that. Perhaps something like... Superfan? More like Super Mr. Suxalot Superfan? More like Super Pooper Scooper Superfan? More like SuperFAG

Friends - I'm never on the Boards, but my friends and I have been laughing about this one...they emailed it to me when they saw it...so I broke down and signed up. Ok, first of all I admit that I posted a little too early after the loss and the cut was still a little too raw. I don't regret anything I said...but I should have prefaced it a little more. Rich Rod was, bar none, the best candidate even discussed. I was thrilled with the hire...I'm still thrilled with the hire. There is no doubt the program is heading in the right direction and the future is bright. I thought after the game and I'm still convinced that we were outcoached. It happens. Bo was a god to me, but he was still outcoached from time to time as well. I'm a lot of things...as you can clearly read in this thread...but fair weather or bandwagon fan I am not. I do have to say that the story about me being left on the Ohio Turnpike made us all laugh out loud though. Unless that guy was a student with me in '97, I never asked him if he wanted his face painted or anything else. That would be the last time I painted faces...and that was only at The Big House. Although it sounds like a great tale, unfortunately I have to debunk that one. If folks want to think I'm an ass, douchebag, fat arse, idiot in a costume, whatever, well I'm fine with that. I'm not going to change any opinions here. The future in Ann Arbor is bright, and I know Rich Rod will be the one leading the way. Go Blue!
