Sunday CFB Hot Flakes

Submitted by MaizeMN on
Well, we made it to the season without imploding. Game 1 is in the books and MICHIGAN dispatched Hawaii, as expected. And while there are a couple of marquee games left with ND/Texas and FSU/Ole Miss, mainstream and social media are awash with early reaction. So, what did we learn in week one? AL looks like AL. OSU and MICHIGAN cover the spread convincingly. Sparty gonna Spart and played down to the competition. Northwestern, WTF? K State and officials conspire to give Stanford a win. USC and LSU need to stop nut stomp blind side cheap shoting and football better. Paul Finebaum is not worried. Says, "SEC is about integrity, above all else." Paul Finebaum is a delusional SEC homer asshat. MSU (NTMSU) oopses. Bert and AR underwhelm, as always. NEB and Fresno State has class. Navy resorts to crowd sourcing for a QB, so that's a thing. What else?

Kill retired and there was no athletic director. The hire of Claeys is defensible to see if he can perpetuate the progress under Kill. If he cannot, they can cut bait. It looks like the coaching is fine, other than the cheap-shot head-first attitude the teams seems to have. We'll see about the B1G season. Recruiting is still awful. I think he stays if they make a bowl. If not, he's gone.

I actually think Brandon Harris is decent, but his OL is complete trash. They make him run play action on obvious passing downs with only two receivers running routes. You will never see a wide open LSU receiver, it's always going to be their QB trying to thread the needle into tight windows. Cam Cameron is the worst OC at a reputable program. He should have spent the entire Wisconsin game in the box rather than on the sideline calling Fournette isolations all day.

will be the next coach at LSU or Texas if Strong has a shit year.  Meyer will last another 4 years tops....depending how long it takes for Harbaugh to "Saban" him out of the conference...ie heart problems. I really hope Herman does not end up at OSU as he has the chops to be an elite coach and alreay has midwest ties.

My guess is that Urban stays longer at OSU than anywhere else, much the way Saban has at Alabama. Ageee on possible destinations for Herman. Miles and Strong won't last long if they don't win, and might get axed even quicker if it looks like the other school is taking a run at Herman. He is, surely, the cream of the crop right now.

I think you underestimate the intolerance that the OSU power structure has for losses. Perhaps you're right, but should Michigan beat OSU four out of six or three in a row, Meyer will find himself under concerted attack.

When Woody lost two of three to us there was huge pressure to dump him. Who knows but folks rarely go wrong assuming the worst about the OSU fan/alumni base.

Can anyone explain how northwestern wasn't awarded a touchdown on that play where the wmu player flipped the ball back inbounds?

He's better than I thought he was going to be. I thought he was going to be Brandon Harris bad or maybe worse. He showed he can compete forward passes and has a decent arm, just makes too many boneheaded decisions. He even scrambled a couple times. Hopefully our front can stop their run game and our secondary can make them pay for his mistakes.

so it says more about WM than NW. USC and LSU need a nut thrashing and Bootie (sp) should receive a LONG suspension. MSU will be fine but aren't as good as last year. Other MSU smoked what we smoked before App St in '07. Bama is Bama and Saban needs to try the NFL again as he's an NBA talent playing HS ball at this point. It was week 1 so we know nothing, Jon Snow.

Yeah, one of my hot takes from yesterday - because I have them and rarely express them, so here's one - is that Houston needs to be in a Power Five conference, and it seems like the Big XII would be a natural choice for them. Tom Herman's offense there is fun to watch and pretty frightening if you have to face them, I am sure.

I posted something the other day to the effect that I would not  judge msu no matter how crappy they play against Furman.  You are right - they always look poor in their opener and by mid Oct they are playing at a very high level.  We will get a better idea of where they are in two weeks when they head to Notre Dame.

Honestly, we won't even by then.

The most startling statistic in college football in the last decade is as follows:

From 2008-2013, Notre Dame played both Michigan and Michigan State each year, always within a maximum of 3 weeks within each other.

Over that span, Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke posted a winning 4-2 record against the Irish. Mark Dantonio went 2-4.

MSU often plays shitty against Notre Dame, but most often it has no bearing on how they are in October and November.
