Is legit, they get blown out today, I don't see them as a threat. You aren't going to beat good teams scoring 49 points
to play football, not to play trumpet
Is legit, they get blown out today, I don't see them as a threat. You aren't going to beat good teams scoring 49 points
True, but I'll still worry about them when we play them, especially in EL.
I didn't know Baylor was playing!?
Ladies & gentlemen, our preferred walkon future kicker! Love him already.
The bronze shoe/sock combo makes it look like diarrhea running down their legs.
Combat football uniforms: great idea. Combat basketball uniforms: what the...
Someone pooped on MSU's shoes...
I see that this is getting a pretty good reaction but I think he's being pretty obnoxious. Not exactly a model way to handle rejection.
Agreed. If this kid was going to MSU and was saying the same stuff about Michigan, we would be calling him and idiot and a typical spartan.
Those jerseys and corresponding socks/shoes are U-G-L-Y.
Not getting the announcers on my CBS live feed. While ordinarily that's a good thing it's kinda annoying in this game where neither team has names on the back of their uniforms.
So who are we rooting for in this game other than the asteroid?
Good game so far. Hard to know who would be better or us to win this game. Do think it is likelier for us to sweep the Spartans as opposed to Indiana.
Playing in Assembly Hall is tough unless you're Wisconsin.
Edit: not that Breslin is easy just easier than Assembly Hall
Also, I love our team but would NOT mind having Victor Oladipo in our arsenal
A loud "Gary sucks" chants while gary harris is at the FT line.
Just turned the game on. These uniforms are the worst thing.
We have very little room to criticize given our Outback fiasco!
We have room compared to these. Lots of room.
Tom Crean is going for the Bill Frieder look, obviously. Perhaps as a stab at Izzo.
Why exactly is Indiana singling out Gary Harris? Maybe another Indiana kid who went to out of state to MSU...
Derrick Nix runs like he's wearing a diaper.
Rid of the load in his diaper
Thoughts on Indiana vs little bro, nike makes terrible uniforms. I accept the weird color scheme but the simplicity of the design and the team name on the back make the uniforms look very pre school like.
RealTimeRPI actually has Miami ahead of us. So we definitely want FSU to win and deflate their bubble.
As a Miami (YTM) fan, Miami is not really a threat for a #1 seed. They are a very streaky team and will unfortunately lose a couple of games they shouldn't during the year. They already lost to freaking Florida Gulf Coast.... Florida Gulf Coast!
I am biased, but I think it will be better for Michigan if Miami wins the ACC instead of Duke.
This is the first time since I can remember that big ten basketball is this entertaining.
MSU should probably be losing by even more but they're not even playing all that bad, IU is mostly hitting on all cylinders right now.
These refs are being very subjective. 3 horrible calls going against MSU. I can understand Izzo's frustration.
I want MSU to lose, so there's no such thing as a bad call against them.
I'd prefer both teams to lose if possible.
It's important for IU to win. An MSU road win would be huge for them in terms of winning the conference. That said, Yogi just took about 5 steps on his layup. I also noticed he picks up his pivot foot too soon on most of his drives from the top of the key but he's never called for traveling.
White and green
But that's it, the only ones.
Those shoes will be the shit when it come to Halloween and mobile 3CPO costumes.
To act like tom Izzo, I would say you are a terrible parent.
That is like the third turnover Indiana has had inbounding the ball.
I don't even know what to say about it.
Of Ned Flanders and Dwight Struit
was just discussed on sports center!!
has actually been incredibly entertaining and very well-played (except for the IU TO's).
Great shot making, great ball movement
Also Payne is having much more of an impact than Zeller. Think Zeller is a good player but he is probably overrated at least to this point and not just based on this half's performance thus far.
Watford can be just garbage sometimes, he has the basketball IQ of Javale McGee. State is playing some good basketball and these teams are almost outscoring Minny-Wisconsin from yesterday.
Entertaining 1st half but Indiana should be pissed they're not leading by double-digits. They made a ton of unforced errors that their 10 turnover tally doesn't even begin to describe.
Also, yeah - without checking the box score, it seems like Zeller's been a nonfactor. To use Hokespeak, I haven't 'felt' him
IU can shoot the lights out, but their D is not impressing me, especially inside. This is the same Sparty team that scored 49 against Wisconsin and was in the 60's against PSU and Nebraska.
Different tempo in those games
Second half. Going to be a good one!
Indiana is so sloppy with the ball
Both teams shooting above 40 percent from three poit line.
State is above 50 percent.
8-13 from 3? Yeah, they aren't going to do that against us.
State shooting about 90% from three.
And still down by one.
That was a huge possession for Indiana.
Hulls has the shooting form of a weak 6th grade, and it's deadly.
Yup...MSU is lucky to be within 10 points.
Sparty credit, they have a good chance to win this game and if they do, what a great week for them.
It's better for us if Ind wins IMO
he's gonna have a heart attack
I really don't want State to win but they have to beat the refs along with IU, this is lopsided officiating at its worst.
I agree. State needs to lose but this has been some real home cooking by the refs.
Payne is 3-3 from 3 pt. range? Seriously?
and are getting penetration at will
I think I'm (we're?) rooting for IU here, right?
First of all, an MSU loss is never a bad thing.
Second, while I think IU is more of a threat to us, a road victory against any of the top teams is a big advantage in the Big Ten race. That's why our victory in Minn was big.
Third, it's fun to watch Izzo get angry.
hasn't gone full-on bobby knight crazy yet... he's a losing season away from chucking chairs
Yeah, rooting for IU because of all the reasons above, but man MSU is getting jobbed by the refs.
Big ten life on the road. I can't wait for tonight.
Not sure which team winning is better for us but I do think all four games against these teams are going to be battles. Absolutely essential for us to win our home games for us to have a chance to repeat as Big Ten champs.
This is absurd. It really is like a game of HORSE.
Not much defense on display today...
Also, you KNOW that Oladipo is gonna be able to leg-hump Trey Burke all day long at Assembly Hall and won't be called once.
Refs are horrible.
It's like tennis. Winning at home is holding serve. A big road win is like breaking a serve. An MSU win here would be a huge service break for them. So we need IU to win and apparently the refs have gotten that message as well because they are really lopsided in IU's favor.
Is finally paying off for Izzo, the refs have started to call some phantom fouls now
I'm not seeing the lopsided officiating that others are. Which call did you think was really bad?
I think both of the recent offensive fouls. Guess they offsetted each other.
Yeah that one on Zeller was very weak.
There was a blatant foul on Oladipo on lob pass inside and the ball went out of bounds off Victor and they gave it to IU...it was a double negative for state, it should have been a foul on IU and at worst MSU ball. This game has been about as lopsided as a sinking Titanic.
Well fouls are dead even, so I don't think it's been THAT lopsided.
I don't really have an opinion on the foul calling in the game, but just because that stat is even doesn't mean anything. There could have been a bunch of uncalled fouls on iu, etc. that would make the game considered to be poorly officiated despite the foul numbers being equal.
Possible, but unlikely. I agree that the number doesn't tell the whole story, but it's hard to conclude that it's extremely lopsided when the numbers are even. I didn't see many uncalled fouls on Indiana.
this one's getting ugly!
Turnovers galore. Indiana is sloppy.
Such a sloppy game for both teams. State has 40% of their points off turnovers!
20 steals between the two teams. That is embarassing.
and I've always hated how Ind gets the calls they do at home, it's a friggin' joke
The MLive beat writing for MSU hoops did a huge favor for all of us. (link: https://twitter.com/diamond83/status/295574478228946944/) Knock this one outta the park, gang.
His head is so far up his ass he can taste what he had for breakfast.
I see anatomy isn't your strong suit.
is over rated IMO, they're good, but not great, they get hype because they're Indiana
Agreed. Zeller is overrated. Oladipo is by far their best player.
Oladipo lighting it up today. Dakich is right. He is by far their best player.
Payne keeping State in it.
And that one hurts. See ya Keith.
This is a worrying, if not unexpected, output by MSU today.
Keep in mind they are shooting lights out from 3 and IU has 16 turnovers.
They are also doing this without their best player in Appling playing less than 20 minutes.
I would put Appling as their third best player behind Payne and Harris. He's been awful today even when he's in.
Appling is their closer so to speak, he's the guy that takes the big shots down the stretch, he hasn't been great today but he's the player you want to have the ball in the last 2 minutes.
But do you think they could play any better than this with him in there?
Agreed. It's going to be a brawl when we play them. Even in Ann Arbor beating MSU is going to be difficult.
Izzo's really getting his team to where it needs to be for March.
Izzo the last few years has taken a month or two to get the team really rolling; seems the same this year. On the other hand, IU is having no trouble scoring even with a ton of TOs which bodes well for us.
And they're probably in the "contender" category. Where I think Indiana is in that category, but maybe not world beaters. And with Indians being Indiana that probably means the home game might be a bit easier, but going down there is almost always impossible because you're playing the refs there more than anywhere else in the Big Ten. I think we gain more by MSU stinking because stealing one in E. Lansing is easier than Bloomington, where a not as strong as we thought Indiana team probably still gets us at home.
But we knew this was going to be a brutal race with 4-5 teams going to the wire.
MSU will play up or down to anyone. Tons of talent, not always disciplined. Can beat great teams or lose to crappy ones.
What's the chant? Something Tom Izzo?
He deserves it. He keeps walking onto the court (which is supposed to be a technical foul) and the refs allow it.
this indy-sparty game is fantastic.
"SIT DOWN IZZO!!"
that chant needs to be shamelessly jacked by the maize rage. i think the crimson guard would be okay with it.
How in the hell did he not get a foul? izzo was literally on the court and touched an indiana player who ran by.
Tough break their for Sparty, but it looked like a good call.
Game, striped britches.
50-50 call could have gone either way. Initial thought was it was a block but I can see that being called a charge. Obviously huge call that gives Indiana the game but could have been the right call. Defender looked set but the key was it before the offensive player got in the air?
Either way great game and we are going to have hands full with both teams.
As much as I love to see Sparty sparting, I have to say, it seems like the stripes are calling a one-sided game
I agree but don't mind. Sparty has been very lucky up until now in league play (Wisconsin shooting 7-18 from FT comes to mind) so I don't mind them getting a bad break now and then.
some coach loving hugging going on after that game. Get a room, boys.
Sparty did well on themselves today in showing that they may be a pretty decent team and coming to form. I hate saying it, but it's true. This was a game where KenPom comes in and shows that it's about more than just wins/losses. Sometimes you play well and lose but good/great things can be shown from a said loss; this might be the case for Sparty today.
Well this is the outcome that benefitted us the most, but this game was much closer than I thought it would be. MSU is getting better it seems every game.
Hard to say if it benefited us the most IMO.
If we are destined to split with each of these teams then it is probably better for them to split the games between themselves also.
Either way the game is good film for our team to look at and is a cautionary tale to not underestimate either of these teams.
State already stole a game on the road this week, if they win today that's another tough road win that another contender might not get.
Yeah, you don't want a contender (who isn't us) to beat another contender on the road. IU winning at home is expected and doesn't change the overall picture. For MSU to beat IU on the road would have been unexpected and would have really shaken things up. (I rooted for MSU to beat Ohio for the same reason.)
Now, if IU were to lose at home to a middle-of-the-pack team like Iowa or Illinois, that'd be perfectly fine.
Or however you spell that- is committed to Notre Dame
Tough game for the Spartans. Interested to see how the rematch at Breslin turns out. It'll be just as intense.
On a side note, MSU picks up a transfer from Canada for football.
They recruit internationally.
With how many teams lost ahead of them this week (Louisville, Arizona, Butler, Minnesota, Kansas State) State should actually move up in the rankings after this loss.
Considering we won @Wisconsin too.
Michigan State shot 45% from the floor (27-60) and went 11-23 from three-point point range. Indiana, for their part, shot 27-53 and 8-21 from three-point range. Victor Olidapo ends the day with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Gary Harris also had 21 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
By most lines that were published, if you would have taken Indiana and the over, you likely would be collecting your moeny as I type. Massey went with an 80% win probability for Indiana and a nine-point margin.
Of the Spartans' losses, however, this is the second closest overall and the closest in conference play, as well as their best scoring effort among those losses and, at least statistically, their best defensive performance in that set. Just looking at those few games, they are getting harder fought each time, so our meeting with them should be a pretty good fight.
Indiana was favored anywhere from 8 to 10.5.
Good post. They definitely seem to be going in a more positive direction as the season progresses. That's not to say every game will be better than the last but, as you note, they appear to be playing tougher even when they do lose.
definitely is looking way better than earlier this season. If they could have found a way to utilize Payne during the end of that game I feel like they could have snuck away with one. I'm just excited to see how we match up with them this year. Also, since when is Payne a 3 pt shooter?
Is Gus on the call tonight? Anybody know?
This Iowa-Purdue game is beyond ugly. I have been watching for 10 minutes, and there's been one made field goal.
19-16 at half. 15% field goals for Iowa, 29% for Purdue.
We need to go back to doubling the post against MSU and make Appling and Harris beat us or I think we"ll be in trouble inside.
I would never advocate doubling Nix or Payne to leave Appling and Harris open. Make Nix go to his right, Payne to his left, box out, and live with the results. Neither of those two (Nix and Payne) are going to beat you with their post game.
Surprise surprise, MSU is very good and Izzo has done a great job coaching this season.
MSU had one player, Travis Trice with eight points, score off the bench.
Indiana only had two players score and 12 total points off their bench
Scout's #1 recruiting class. Road-grader OL coming in. #1 all purpose back coming in. #1 Basketball team, led by the #1 PG in the nation. Silky smooth Tim Harday JRRRRR - Oop catching GRIII, and the Canadian swoosh-machine Stauskas. It's a good time to be a Michigan fan, brothers. Let us bow our fucking heads.
Bo Glue, ladies and gents
Well when ya say it like that...I guesssss things are, okay....!
Iowa mounting a comeback. Purdue was unable to put them away and here we are with 4:00 left to go in a 2 point game..anything can happen
