Sunday Afternoon Basketball Open Thread
Didn't see this up yet, so I figured I would take the initiative. Top 25 Matchups are
- 25 Miami v. FSU
- 7 IU v. 13 MSU
- 17 Creighton v SIU
and obviously us later at 6:00
Obviously, the IU MSU game has the most effect on us, but other games of note include Iowa v. Purdue, and possibly Rutgers v. UConn.

He deserves it. He keeps walking onto the court (which is supposed to be a technical foul) and the refs allow it.

this indy-sparty game is fantastic.
"SIT DOWN IZZO!!"
that chant needs to be shamelessly jacked by the maize rage. i think the crimson guard would be okay with it.

How in the hell did he not get a foul? izzo was literally on the court and touched an indiana player who ran by.

Game ova.

Tough break their for Sparty, but it looked like a good call.

Game, striped britches.

As much as I love to see Sparty sparting, I have to say, it seems like the stripes are calling a one-sided game

I agree but don't mind. Sparty has been very lucky up until now in league play (Wisconsin shooting 7-18 from FT comes to mind) so I don't mind them getting a bad break now and then.

some coach loving hugging going on after that game. Get a room, boys.

Sparty did well on themselves today in showing that they may be a pretty decent team and coming to form. I hate saying it, but it's true. This was a game where KenPom comes in and shows that it's about more than just wins/losses. Sometimes you play well and lose but good/great things can be shown from a said loss; this might be the case for Sparty today.

Yeah, you don't want a contender (who isn't us) to beat another contender on the road. IU winning at home is expected and doesn't change the overall picture. For MSU to beat IU on the road would have been unexpected and would have really shaken things up. (I rooted for MSU to beat Ohio for the same reason.)
Now, if IU were to lose at home to a middle-of-the-pack team like Iowa or Illinois, that'd be perfectly fine.

Tough game for the Spartans. Interested to see how the rematch at Breslin turns out. It'll be just as intense.

On a side note, MSU picks up a transfer from Canada for football.
They recruit internationally.

With how many teams lost ahead of them this week (Louisville, Arizona, Butler, Minnesota, Kansas State) State should actually move up in the rankings after this loss.
January 27th, 2013 at 3:21 PM ^
Considering we won @Wisconsin too.
January 27th, 2013 at 3:20 PM ^
Michigan State shot 45% from the floor (27-60) and went 11-23 from three-point point range. Indiana, for their part, shot 27-53 and 8-21 from three-point range. Victor Olidapo ends the day with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Gary Harris also had 21 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
By most lines that were published, if you would have taken Indiana and the over, you likely would be collecting your moeny as I type. Massey went with an 80% win probability for Indiana and a nine-point margin.
Of the Spartans' losses, however, this is the second closest overall and the closest in conference play, as well as their best scoring effort among those losses and, at least statistically, their best defensive performance in that set. Just looking at those few games, they are getting harder fought each time, so our meeting with them should be a pretty good fight.

Indiana was favored anywhere from 8 to 10.5.

Good post. They definitely seem to be going in a more positive direction as the season progresses. That's not to say every game will be better than the last but, as you note, they appear to be playing tougher even when they do lose.
January 27th, 2013 at 3:46 PM ^
definitely is looking way better than earlier this season. If they could have found a way to utilize Payne during the end of that game I feel like they could have snuck away with one. I'm just excited to see how we match up with them this year. Also, since when is Payne a 3 pt shooter?

Is Gus on the call tonight? Anybody know?

This Iowa-Purdue game is beyond ugly. I have been watching for 10 minutes, and there's been one made field goal.
January 27th, 2013 at 4:35 PM ^
19-16 at half. 15% field goals for Iowa, 29% for Purdue.
January 27th, 2013 at 4:43 PM ^
We need to go back to doubling the post against MSU and make Appling and Harris beat us or I think we"ll be in trouble inside.
January 27th, 2013 at 5:00 PM ^
I would never advocate doubling Nix or Payne to leave Appling and Harris open. Make Nix go to his right, Payne to his left, box out, and live with the results. Neither of those two (Nix and Payne) are going to beat you with their post game.

Surprise surprise, MSU is very good and Izzo has done a great job coaching this season.
MSU had one player, Travis Trice with eight points, score off the bench.
Indiana only had two players score and 12 total points off their bench

Scout's #1 recruiting class. Road-grader OL coming in. #1 all purpose back coming in. #1 Basketball team, led by the #1 PG in the nation. Silky smooth Tim Harday JRRRRR - Oop catching GRIII, and the Canadian swoosh-machine Stauskas. It's a good time to be a Michigan fan, brothers. Let us bow our fucking heads.
