Summer visits

Submitted by BigHouseBoyz on

Jeremy Crabtree from ESPN tweeting that if the new early signing period proposal is adopted, recruits would be allowed to take summer officials!  That is the only way an early signing period makes any sense, IMHO.

The NCAA said Thursday it would be willing to adjust the recruiting calendar to allow prospects to take official visits during the summer before their senior years in conjunction with a proposal to add early signing periods on the last Wednesday of June and in mid-December. Michelle Hosick, the NCAA's associate director of media and public relations, said if the adjustments to the recruiting calendar passes in an April vote, recruits would be allowed to take official visits starting June 1 until the last Saturday before the June signing period begins. They would also be allowed to take visits from July 25-31. The Collegiate Commissioners Association, who controls the national letter of intent and when recruits can officially sign with a school, is expected to vote in favor of the two early signing periods in a November vote. The NCAA controls the recruiting calendar and official visit schedules and that vote would not take place until April.

not sure why they would have a June signing period. I always thought when they said an early signing period that it meant like Mid November and then the normal one in February. I figured a Mid-November period would give kids a chance to get it over with, if they were confident with their choice and not be bothered anymore and that would give coaches a chance to only have to recruit remaining undecided kids. Kind of a win for everyone, but June sure seems early to me.

Summer signing period is not a good idea. If people think that fans harassing kids on twitter now is bad, wait until kids that are verbally commited don't want to sign in the summer in case something happens.

I'm for a summer signing period, but it needs to be non binding. the only thing that shouldn't be allowed is contact by other staffs if a kid is committed. similar to like what I think Brian had purposed. or whoever it was on here that brought that idea up

It would be nice if it allowed kids to use all 5 of their official visits to the same school. It could allow kids that are commited to your program to meet and recruit other kids on officials that are uncommitted.

Then if they want out, they are still able to use however many of their officials they haven't used yet to check out other schools. If I was a UM recruit, I would want to spend all 5 of my officials to got to UM games, but if I could take one, I would go to 4 places I didn't really care about just for a free trip.

It would allow a recruit to tell other schools to stop recruiting him. He would be "committed" and he couldn't contact other coaches either unless he rescinded the commitment. The kid could get out if he wanted (coach gets fired, etc) but allows him more security than just a verbal. It lets the coaches know who is really committed and who is just holding a spot.

want football to be happening during a visit. Spring football is the best time to visit from a coaches and parents perspective.  The kids prefer game days because the atmosphere is usually awesome.  Spring practice allows kids to see how practice goes, get a true feel for the coaches in action, and they get specialized time because there is no game prep or game during the visit.  There are also kids on campus and professors are all around.  Notice how many of the stories from the spring had harbaugh hanging out with the kids, walking down the street, taking pics, bbq at the big house games, as opposed to Fall/game week visits are locker room pics, and maybe 1 pic with the coach in the office or SH.

As to the timing of the summer signing period, how close would it be to the ten days of summer camps?  Is there a potential conflict that is intentionally being created to make camps harder to hold?

I'm going to go with coaches from G5 schools and weak Power 5 schools in good recruiting areas. The current system makes recruiting reasonably efficient. Schools have time to evaluate the recruits. Recruits get a chance to see what their best offers are going to be. Recruits also get a much better idea of what each school has to offer. That efficiency isn't helpful if you're SMU or NC State for example. Any recruit they sign in June that blows up in his senior year would probably have gone elsewhere.

they really need to let these kids take official visits in the summer before there senior year. I know lots of kids who can't and couldn't get out to visit schools because of the Football games on Friday Nights and Saturdays..... Letting them travel in the Summer w there families on Officials will help to sort out schools and help these kids be able to take all 5 visits if they want. Thy only have time for maybe 1 or 2 if there farther schools etc:

Unfortunately many of the kids in the Detroit area are in school until mid June. I like the idea of another signing period but it only gives our kids a couple weeks for visits.

Don't need 2 if you're going to do it...just August right before school starts. That gives a summer to evaluate and take officials since the recruiting calendar is changing.

That said...I still want to see clauses that protect the student-athlete.

  1. You can void the LOI if your coach leaves BEFORE the February signing day
  2. You can void the LOI if your coach is fired BEFORE the February signing day
  3. You can void the LOI if your school goes on probation of any kind...so you still don't have to attend if assistant coaches are touching boys, or tutors are taking tests, or the entire university is covering up multiple sexual assaults.

Any one of those 3 things should allow the student-athlete to look around if he so chooses.

supercede the February signing date?  I would like to see a clause that allows recruits - minus interference from other coaches, i.e., Announcement made, but take two to three weeks before the actual signing to prevent buyer's remorse.
