Sugar Bowl Open Thread - Pre-Game Warmup

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Hopefully, no one is upset that I put this up way too early, but I can’t wait for 8:30 PM. Obviously, I can barely wait for 6:30 PM either, but as I am already preparing for this evening, my hope is that there is some pre-game discussion as well.

Those of us stuck at work or at home for this one will hopefully appreciate the chance to chat a little bit now and  then throughout the game. Those of you in New Orleans...what are you doing in the open threads? Get out there and support the Wolverines!

This is it, fellow Wolverines.

This is your Allstate Sugar Bowl Open Thread - Pre-Game Warm-Up. Actual game thread to start hopefully in the next 45 minutes or so.

8:30 PM on ESPN. Pre-game starts at 8 PM, live from the Superdome in New Orleans. Many thanks to our fellow MGoBloggers who are live at the scene for their updates.

This is the only game tonight, as it should be. Hopefully,  it’s an awesome one…for us.

GO  BLUE!

Man am I pumped for this game! I am gonna leave right now to convince my bartender to put up my UM flag and play the fight song after out TDs. That's about the best I can hope for out here in Vermont!

megangoblue left with her dad to pitch for an hour. I have the preperation for dinner finished and beer and liquor waiting, but I can't even start the cooking/getting drunk process for another hour, so I'm currently sitting alone in her childhood room on Facebook and MGoBlog.

While I'm sitting here, Va Tech is slowly turning from a surefire blowout victory to some combination of 2004 USC and 2005 Texas, with a little 1997 Michigan sprinkled in. This needs to stop, like now.

From the website (and med classmate who's an alum):

The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Hokie" yell (Old Hokie Cheer below) which is still used today.

Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The colors were chosen by a committee because they made a 'unique combination' not worn elsewhere at the time. The official definition of "hokie" is "a loyal Virginia Tech Fan".

The Cheer:

Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hy!
Tech, Tech, VPI
Sol-a-rex, Sol-a-rah
Poly Tech Vir-gin-ia
Ray rah VPI
Team! Team! Team!

chicken sausage, chorizo, and leftover rib roast for meats, pot beans that have simmered all day, scallion, tomato, Vermont cheddar, etc. and a really nice Argeninian cab courtesy of my Limbaugh-lovin' bro-in-law who loves me anyway, and I am going to eat my way to eight o'clock. Even my seven-year-old daughter is excited, although she has picked a Netflick and will just watch highlights when I make her do it. Even my wife, a UF grad, is excited to watch (I fibbed and told her it just might be Denard's last game).

....on the "HokieBIrd":

"The HokieBird has won national mascot competitions and has been so popular that the mascot landed an appearance on Animal Planet's "Turkey Secrets," shown annually around Thanksgiving."

Mmmm....HokieBird sandwiches on the day after the Sugar Bowl....

Are we locked in for 8:30 or will we have to put up with some teen/country sensation entertaining us and whatnot until 8:43 or 8:47?

All signs point toward kickoff at 8:30...but I'm suspicious.

Watching ESPN right now Des is on talking about DRob, the band is on the sidelines and half the stadium seating is covered with Maize pom poms. I think I might get sick! This needs to start NOW.

Watching Denard throw around. Borges is currently standing at the 40. Devin is warming up too, he really has an arm. Place really hasn't filled yet.

On my way to Buffalo Billiards right now to get a good seat, head start on the wings/beer, and start the game off right with (hopefully) a solid turnout of DC area fans

I prefice this by saying that I believe 100% that NCAA football players should be paid.

However, how come every single one of these poor football players are rocking $300 headphones?

This should be the Beats Audio by Dr. Dre Sugar Bowl.

Denard says he is hungry and ready to eat. Did anyone else notice MSU mimicing the eating after their big plays on defense last night?

a Mad Hatter or two. Many thanks to Mgrowold for reminding me to dig out my bottle of Woodford Reserve, it was buried in the detritus deep in the nether regions of the cabinet.

No way Michigan doesn't show up to play this game, anyone that thinks Va Tech has the bigger "chip on their shoulder" must not know much about what these players have gone through in the last three years. There is a difference between being a little insulted over a bowl invite as opposed to carrying the weight of a football empire / legacy on your back. This team shows up hungry and fired up, especially with the O finally clicking and the D getting popped in the mouth a bit against Ohio State.

42 - 24 Good Guys.

GO BLUE!

Earlier, I heard on espn radio Doug Gottlieb say Michigan and VT do not belong in the sugar bowl. I never payed much attention to who Doug was, but he really seems annoying to me and how does Michigan not deserve a bcs game. Also, he interviewed Cousins from MSU and Cousins said he was rooting for VT to win. I officially feel bad I rooted for MSU yesterday, since I was hoping all Big 10 teams won for a good showing. I will never do that again.
