Stupid Traditions

Submitted by marc_from_novi on
I've been to quite a few road games over the years. One of the fun things about going to see games on the road is checking out the other teams' traditions. I went to a game at Purdue about 10 years ago and, while it may seem a bit silly, I was really looking forward to seeing the World's Largest Drum in person. Unfortunately, it was a grand disappointment. Let's face it, that drum is actually piece of crap. It's not really that big and it sounds terrible. Have any of you had similar experiences?

would be so much more.... BOLD???? Hmmm??? Like the pun?? it's a joke on different fonts and yet I managed to insert a punchline about typeface options while also commenting on the stature of a new marching band formation with a relatively larger boldface font. It's so clever! Wait, no. I'm just a tool. Return to the normal hijinks and hilarity. And boob talk. Boobs!

Ohio State fans' tradition of throwing batteries and bottles at Michigan fans is pretty effing stupid. And not that this can hold a candle to the above, but I have sat in the UCLA student section a few times, and I could not get over how lame their cheers were. They had a de facto, plain-clothed cheerleader who would explain what the cheers were, and then lead the crowd. (Shouldn't dudes already know their own cheers?) Some of the individual cheers were pretty funny, however (e.g., "fuck SC, it's the Rose Bowwwwl," done to sort of a hip-hop beat). But the U-C-LLLL-A cheer they kept doing seemed sort of lame.

My wife and I were in Pasadena for the UCLA game in 1989; the UCLA fans sported every possible shade of blue between powder blue and royal blue (no navy blue) combined with more yellows and golds than we could count. No two of them looked alike, it was wierd.

I thought it was VERY over-rated and was also very hard to "jump around" since the bleachers were so warped from the jumping. I really enjoyed the entrance of the PSU team to Zombie Nation (I know I know) but it was so crazy up in the upper deck that the whole stadium shook (apparently they don't play Zombie Nation that much anymore because the stadium isn't structurally sound enough to handle it. Yes a PSU student told me that this year).

Five Stupid Big Ten Traditions 5) MSU: Band looks like it has a nervous tic in its pregame entry cadence. Or is it a cramp? 4) Illinois: Anyone been intimidated or offended by a Muck Fichigan shirt? 3) Purdue: One two three four FIRST DOWWWWN BITCH. And Purdue Pete has to scare little kids. 2) Ohio State: Gold Pants. 1) Michigan: For getting punched repeatedly in the soul dong. Obvs.

State does the "1, 2, 3, First Down Bitch!" chant too. Infinitely, creative, guys. Everyone who steals some incarnation of the C-Ya chant from Michigan Hockey. Let's face it, Cornell hasn't had good reason to use it in years. Northwestern for mocking our third-down keychain ring by waving their keys for the expressed symbolization of "someday, Michigan students will pump our gas for us." I've never really had a reason to hate the 'Cats until an unfortunate incident with one of their Alumni on YouTube. Cockiest son-of-a-bitch ever. NU is a drain on the Big Ten athletically.

I'd like to see a new tradition started. I have to admit that we'd be stealing this from ND, but I'd like to see players start swan diving into MSU's band after a TD.

I went with some freinds to Cincy to watch a Bengals game. There were these three guys who walk around with a block of ice on a cart sloped down with a curved trail carved in it. They provide the liquor and you can take a shot down it for free. They do it every home game. They even have jerseys made up and they say "Luge Crew" on them. What's funny is that if you are an rival fan you can do one but you have to scream "Who Dey" into a megaphone before you can take a shot. Thought it was pretty cool. I have never seen so many fans denounce their team for liquor.

Reasons: #1- B/c an eagle flew over your stadium during a big win is reason to adopt it as a secondary mascot? This just reeks of "Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you" #2- You have a mascot. A Tiger. Tigers and Eagles have no relation what so ever. Perhaps if they mated and created a super flying beast of destruction, a "Tigle" if you will, then I can buy that. But pretty sure the Tiger would just eat the Eagle before/during/after the mating procedure. #3- The damn bird crashed into the ground and committed kamikaze suicide after your big victory. True Story. #4- The bird in question was the pet of a Northern Army regiment. You are a school from the South. So a Reb soldier picked up this eagle from the other side, nursed it back to health, and made it his pet? The South helped the North? [Foghorn Leghorn voice] NEVER, sir! I in-du-betibly deny your honorarium in the land of Dixie. [/foghorn leghorn voice] #5- I tried to ask an Auburn fan at the 2001 Citrus Bowl why two mascots and she couldn't come up with an answer. Then again, she may have answered me but I never noticed since I was staring at her extraordinarily perky breasts in that cut-off tank top.

Agreed. Unfortunately my girlfriend at that time didn't think so. Since she was standing next to me. But seriously-- hot blonde chick from the south with the tight jean shorts, midriff showing tank top, nice rack, topped off with a cowboy hat with her team's logo on it? At a football game in Florida? With the weather about 55 - 60 deg at kickoff? I'm a MAN!

Actually, I always thought the jingling of keys was pretty silly. "I jingle my keys at you!" This may be - in fact, almost certainly is - influenced by the fact that Virginia Poly does it too.

That is one of the coolest college traditions. Especially when it's indoors at Kansas for a home game... the whole silence except for that one chant I've thought was eerily intimidating. Kind of like you expect the Kansas crowd to go all Children of the Corn on you and have glowing red eyes cause you to spontaneously combust or raise the corpses of James Naismith & Danny Manning to feed on your brains.

totally disagree...for anyone who has been to allen fieldhouse and seen the rock chalk chant up close, it's intense. it's eerie and nothinig short of intimidating - especially coming from the loudest college basketball fanbase in the country. i'd say it's a top 5 college tradition...i suppose you will get your chance to judge in late-december!

Definitely disagree here. I was visiting a friend and got to go to KU's midnight madness this year. The phog was completely full. And I def agree that the chant is children of the corn creepy as hell. Also an interesting note, it seems as though KU places a higher importance on their Alma Matter song over their fight song? Everyone locks arms and sways while singing it. Definitely different.

General google search says something along the following, general caveat about yahoo answer posts being less reliable than wikipedia: Sometime in the 90s, an announcer for ESPN said that Lubbock has only Tech football and a tortilla factory. The next week, the students came out to kick off with tortillas to protest the generality. Soon it became at kick offs and after touchdowns. It pinnacled in 95 at the Cotton Bowl, but the next year, the school tried to stop it. There were rumors that batteries and rocks were wrapped in the tortillas.

after the game goes and singing the Alma Mater with the band. I really like that and I wish that our players would come and sing the Victors or the Yellow and Blue after every game.
