Stupid Question about Dave Brandon

Submitted by IncrediblySTIFF on

Question:

What if Dave Brandon managed to land one of the Harbaughs at the end of the year?  Would you still want him fired?  Is this less likely to happen than us somehow winning out or only dropping one more game this season?

For the record, I don't think this happens, and I don't really care who the athletic director is because I have zero chance of ever influencing that decision.

College athletics is not about making money, nor wins and losses, it's about bettering the lives of the student athletes first, other students second, and alum/fans third.

Prior to the season, he had failed at the second two by trying to capture as much consumer surplus as possible (charge the most you possibly can, even if sales fall off, then offer discounts to cover the rest). It's unforgivable when you charge so much for the student tickets that students bail and you lose your future season ticket holders.

With concussion-gate, he proved that even the players are not coming first under his regime. While he did not make the immediate call to put Shane back on the field, he continues to fail horribly at the crisis management that followed.

I would still want Brandon gone if we had gone undefeated and won the national championship.

I would still want him fired.  This is not about football wins and losses.  This is about an AD that sticks his finger in the eyes of the Michigan fanbase and then lies about it.

Our issues with Dave Brandon have nothing to do with football wins.  Our issues are:

- Gouging the fanbase in the most insulting ways possible (water bottles because of "terrorism", seat cushions because of "safety", dynamic pricing that only goes up but never down . . . )

- Lying, spinning, and deceit as the default means of communication ("Probable" concussion?  WTF?  There will be a probable sunrise tomorrow.  That's not technically a lie in that it's more likely than not, but its only purpose is to obfuscate and cast doubt that is not real . . . )

- Selling out Michigan traditions for a buck (the AD being willing to be the mouthpiece for moving the Ohio State game from the last game of the season so as not to overshadow a lucrative B1G Championship game . . . )

- Pitting the student-athletes against the fanbase, alumni, and students, and then hiding behind them (student athletes being told they will assemble and show support at the command of the AD . . . )

Honestly, would you feel this way if Michigan were 5 - 0?

Because, then the fans are excited, the athletes are heros, nobody cares about high ticket prices and the cost of bottles of water. Maybe people are unhappy about the possible moving of "The Game" and it actually would be a big game, since Michigan wouldn't suck at 5-0.

Whenever you have to come up with extremely unlikely hypotheticals to justify keeping a guy, that guy should probably be fired.

Then you'd be a sterotypical Latin gang member from "Bruce Almighty."

I made sure that anyone who didn't want to be a part of this thread would know what they were getting when they clicked on this.  And I truly am curious, if Dave Brandon had one of the Harbaugh's on the hook for 2015 and beyond, how would people deal with it?

Regardless of what the outcome of the season is or any moves he's responsible for during or immediately following the season, there's only one reasonable thing to happen to Brandon:

Let's not forget this isn't just about the football team itself.  This is about about the questionable decisions he's made, how he's conducted himself, the way he's alienated the fans and turned the athletic department into a vessel that exists purely for profit.  There is no redemption for all of the mistakes he's already made.

I think DB should be fired because it's totally believable he would send insulting emails to the fanbase. If the FOIA requests come back showing he's actually done it as egregiously as reported, he's simply not fit for the job no matter who supports him or what coach he can hire.

Corporatism/profiteering is another disqualifying feature of DB, IMO, but the most serious issue is that he appears to be unable to accept responsibility in any substantial way for any problems that have occurred. Not only do they all have their own story, but that story certainly exonerates DB.

I'm a "data" guy, in part due to my academic and career background, but also because without it, I believe you're just another asshole with an opinion.

So, let's go find some data. I was inspired by the post that said "maybe you shouldn't have them practice this week...."

Eureka!

Let's create a metric called "Coaching Quality Ratio". It would really be simple. Brady can coach between now and the bye week. This season's W-L record established at that point will be the baseline. For the remainder of the season, he will be allowed no contact with the players or any of the other coaches.

The "Coaching Quality Ratio" (CQR) will be: (Total Wins)/(Games Coached).

If Brady Hoke's CQR is the same or less than the CQR for the remainder of the season, he's fired immediately without any further discussion.

If his CQR exceeds the value for the remainder of the season, then it's a data point that will be used in his overall evaluation.

Still would like to see a different AD at the helm regardless of hire.  It's really hit me over the last few days that it's not only a lot of player talent that isn't getting realized.. it's coaches.

Criticize them all you want, what are the odds that we could have so many untalented coaches?  They weren't hired for not knowing football.  This has to go up to the top.

Admitted, I am being lax in my modding as I am in the first day of a three-day training (I think the board might be worn out on this topic for a while), but I'll bite here -

I think the culture of the athletic department needs to change for such a hire to even be a likelihood, and that culture eminates from Brandon. Even if he were to make sure a hire somehow, I don't know that that he can be effective in his position given the damage that has been done to confidence in the department. When you face students, alums, fans, donors, etc...who seriously doubt your department's ability to do the right thing in situations, how can you be effective? When that has been on public display on all media, who would want to deal with that? I imagine the list is short.

He is a douche bag and is destroying the game day experience, hiring a Harbaugh and retaining his position he would see as a referendum on turning every Saturday into the super bowl. He lies....he sucks....he goes.

I'm definitely in the boat of him being gone no matter what. I honestly don't believe that he could ever get a Harbaugh to come here. Plus, he is ruining all things good about Michigan.
