Student Ticket Validation Question

Submitted by justingoblue on

I'll be heading up to Ann Arbor with one more person than expected, and therefore I'm in the market for a single ticket. I found one at a good price and location within the student section, but since the friend coming is not a Michigan student, I would need to get the ticket validated. I searched and saw a thread from 2009 on the topic, and got the price of $25 for a game like Purdue (i.e. not ND or OSU). Is this still accurate? I don't want to end up buying a significant portion of a friends ticket when I tell her the wrong price.

Thanks for the help, as always, MGoBoard.

this year student tickets are $30 each. the validation price is the difference between the student price and adult ticket price. for notre dame, nebraska, and ohio state the adult price is $85/ticket so the validation would be $55. for purdue i believe that adult price is $70 so validation would be $40. i always entered on stadium st side and they never carded me with my student tickets. hope that helps.

Another option is to find a UM friend that isn't going to the game and borrowing their student ID.  Generally speaking, they only look to see if you have an ID, and don't make sure that it is actually your ID (with some exceptions).

That's my next thought, since this ticket would end up being about eighty with the validation price that the above posters found. Can you get the ticket validated at the stadium before kickoff in case I don't run into anyone not going?

Edit: already answered by the mothership. I really should have gotten a good nights sleep last night. Apparently I don't know WTF I'm doing today.

In the past they would scan the ticket before looking at the ID. This is important because after they scan the ticket it can't be scanned again.

So once they stop you at the gate and tell you to get your ticket validated they will sign the back of your ticket making the original scan void.

Then you just go to another gate - non student section entrance and walk in. Tell them you had to leave the stadium to get asthma medication and you will be fine.

I swear to you this worked for me to avoid a validation fee. About 2 years ago i walked in and got my ticket scanned but they stopped my gf because she was using my brother's id (eh, we did the best we could).

Anyway, they said she had to get it validated so I made them sign my ticket allowing re-entry. Then we walked right in another gate. In fact they had a cop come over and look at the tickets to make sure we hadn't forged a signature or some dumb shit. I don't even know.

But we got in without an extra fee.

And it's worked most of the time.  But it is still somewhat risky, as I've had a couple friends get denied, and they've had to go and get the ticket validated (which made them miss a solid chunk of the first quarter).  My recommendation would be to find a cheap non-student ticket, because after validation you would still save money and also time which is important if it's your first game.

FYI, I just went on the Stub Hub website and noticed that they are offering single tickets for as low as $57.00.  Some of the seating locations aren't too bad at all.

scalp a ticket for $20 and then work her way around to where ever you are.  I expect there will be empty seats, particularly in the student section.

We're actually up in the east side club seating. Somehow I bought tickets up there at face, thanks to MGoBlog. The ticket I'm interested in for her is in a student section row A. I figure she should get a good experience out of going solo while my girlfriend and I are getting a small taste of the good life.

As others have noted, there are plenty of ways to get around it. My advice is, go in any entrance except the one facing northeast (most common student entrance) and the one facing north (smaller one that almost nobody uses). I ALWAYS have to show my ID at these ones. And on multiple occasions, the people at the gate have literally looked at my Mcard suspiciously for 30 seconds before asking me to spell my last name (Note: this happened to me once at the Southeast entrance also, so there are no guarantees). Typically though, when I go in the northwest entrance I am never carded.

First observation:  30 bucks for a student ticket is patently absurd.

Second observation:  Seems like there have been reports after each and every game for ejections from the stadium for people using ID's belonging to other people.  i.e., trying to get in on a borrowed MCard.  In the new Michigan Stadium-as-Police State world, combined with Dave Brandon's "no revenue stream left behind" approach, it's getting harder and harder to escape the dreaded validation fee.
