Student Section to Create Color Coordinated Block M

Submitted by meechiganroses on

Could anyone shed some light on the above mentioned topic.  I recieved a twitter from nicoleauerbach this morning:

There will be a color-coordinated Block M in the student section of the Big House this Saturday.

Has this ever been done before?  Will the Block M be blue and the rest of the student section maize?  Any insight from students would be great to hear.

I always thought it would be brilliant for the athletic department to shell out the $500,000 or so (maybe less?) to put 109,000 t-shirts around the bleachers.  It would be awesome to see one game with full color-coordination.  I'm hoping it gets done for the first night game next year.  Either maize or blue, it'd be money well spent, in my opinion.

They planned that thing for months and really put a lot of effort into making sure everyone knew about it.  And it really paid off, probably the most impressive color coordination I've seen (Boise comes close).  I'd like to think we could do that but in my heart I doubt it.  We can't even get everyone to wear maize for a maize out.

No doubt it would be expensive.  And the AD couldn't expect everyone in attendance to have and wear Maize.  That's why I was thinking coordinating everyone wearing Blue would work.  Either that or pay for shirts for everyone.  It'd be worth it this one time, for the first game under the lights, I think.  And I bet with that amount of shirts, a bulk order would end up costing even as little as $2-3 per plain Blue shirt.

I would guess that the price of the shirts would be passed along to the fans by including it in the ticket price.  So if the shirts are $5 a piece that $5 would just get included in the price of the ticket for that game.

I didn't see ANY gaps.  Each section was completely filled with the correct color, in the correct tint.

Did they give out the shirts for each section?  I can't imagine how they could get everyone in sync any other way.  Otherwise, you always have those people that insist on wearing their lucky gray shirt, or who wear their red winter coat because they were too cold.

I went to a U of M / WMU game in K-zoo while I was in school and they were handing out "Black Out" shirts with I think "Fox Sports" sponsorship on it. I'm sure someone would be willing to pay to have their advertising worn by 109k+ people. Are we willing to "sell out" like that? I'd be OK with it if that meant having a very well coordinated color scheme.

As a note, I do realize the difference in magnitude between a hockey arena and the Big House.

Yes it has been done before. I was at the Uconn game and I'm pretty sure there was one then (not the first time though). Yes, blue M and maize surrounding it.

Hope that's right.

Was it waiting for you on your seat?  That would be my first guess, but the student section was such a clusterfuck when I was there (i.e., many people not sitting in their designated seats).  Not sure how that would work out.  Maybe the distribute beforehand to the designated ticket holder?

All of our student tickets say Maize Out on them so we all (theoretically) wear Maize. Then they have volunteers at the stadium hand out shirts when you present you ticket (if you are in the assigned "M" section). As far as I know, it has been done at least twice before in previous years and it looks amazing! The first year it was put on the corner of the section so it looked a little messed up from the air, but they have since moved it to a flat part and it really looks good with all the Maize!

it would be very cool to pull off a helmet with wings.  the 'M' in the picture from Geaux_Blue is very clear, and could easily make a helmet with wings, it would need to be bigger than the 'M', but that coordination and photos/images would be bad ass for a long time.

Actually, a winged helmet design is so easy to pull off in Michigan Stadium that I've always been surprised it wasn't done before.  The sections in the corners are already shaped in the right pattern.

Look at the map here:

(Apologies for the hotlink to michigantickets.net if I didn't do that correctly!)

If you wanted a winged design in the Champions/SW corner, just have the fans in 15R and 18 wear maize, and those in the adjoining sections wear blue. That's it! If you want to get fancy, you can add some maize to 13R & 20 too, but it's not needed.

I think doing that, combined with alternating blue & maize in the other sections around the stadium, would look amazing.

From the Notre Dame game last season. They usually do it in Section 26. That's where the Block M is outlined in the stands. It should be great. I was able to be a part of it last year and it was really awesome. I might wear that blue shirt today.

as is our student section in general, of course.  I don't see why we can't pull off a maize (or blue) out for the entire crowd, as long as it's publicized in advance and everyone spreads the word.  How does Penn State do it?  My guess is that EVERY night game is a white-out, so no 'hyping' is required.  We can do that too, and it should start vs. ND and never end.

to have all night games as maize outs and there is a second.  Discussion.  Hearing none, all of those in favor of the motion signify by saying aye.  All those apposed, nay.

The motion carries unanimously 113,090 to 0.

All night games at Michigan Stadium shall be maize outs.

Am I the only one who is not too into this?  I mean, it looks cool, but it is a straight ripoff of Penn State, and the whole "maize out" idea is a straight rip off of Duke.

It's an outdoor football game in the midwest - color coordination does not seem necessary. Our students are clever enough - I'd like to see them come up with something new.

The whole "white-out" tradition began in 1985, when the NHL's Winnipeg Jets did one in response to the Calgary Flames' "C of Red."  Winnipeg swept Calgary, and their fans started calling it the "white-out."  The Phoenix Coyotes (Winnipeg's successor) even sued PSU for stealing their idea.

I the "color-out" idea is great, personally, and the maize color is unique to Michigan.  Michigan Stadium used to have little personality (in the sense that you couldn't tell Michigan fans by what they were wearing, and the crowd noise dissipated upwards).  Things like the Maize-Out and the new sound reflectors help to achieve that.

btw; since there is always the tendency among older alumni of varying ages to think, "Oh it was so great in my student days, because we did such-and-such..."  I say this:  current students -- you are awesome.  Your Block M's in the Maize Out sections have been fantastic.  I wish we had been clever enough to do it.  Good work by the current students.

I have felt for a long time that since Michigan fans are the masters of the wave we should attempt different versions in addition to what we do now, such as a wave within each section that starts at the bottom and ends at the top, then the adjacent section starts at the top and ends at the bottom, continuing this bottom-to-top, top-to-bottom cycle all the way around the bowl at least for one round.

Another one is when the s-l-o-w wave is done, a fast wave is done in either the same or opposite direction so it overlaps -- call it the rabbit and tortoise wave.
