Stribling and Clark cannot play off coverage, they need to be in press coverage

Submitted by Maizen on

Have I been seeing things the last two weeks or are Stribling and Clark really struggling when they are asked to play off of WR's? Putting them in press like they were for most of the BYU game seems to be what they do best.  Agree?

Personally I don't think he's very good period. Stribling is good in press as you mentioned. You're definitely right, putting either of them in a non press situation is asking for trouble.

They don't seem to swivel and react as well as they should. Might as well use their size as an advantage and hope they don't get burned. I have many complaints about our free safeties and linebackers as well... Also, more pressure from the DLine last night would have limited some of those throws.

True, but I saw a lot of max-pro from Minny. We still got pressure at times, but Ross didn't look near as good as RJS at buck, so we were only rushing 3.5 or less at times. I'm curious as to why RJS wasn't playing more seeing as how he did pretty darn well against MSU. Ross is more of a pure LB and didn't make as good of decisions as RJS either from what I could tell.

Agree on the 'backers, easily their worst game. Anxious to see the UFR and if there was something Minny was doingn that was causing it or if they all mostly just had an off game.

yeah i posted something last night re coaches decisions to alter D personnel and scheme for this game.  i guess they determined during bye week that they should utiilze ross as stand up buck to match up with minnesotas numerous 22 and 12 personnel groupings.  but thats never been ross' strength, he should not be playing over the tackle or TE (if hes playing at all).

they had so much success with nickel and dime packages with 1-2 LBs prior to last night so im very curious why opted to roll with 3 LBs for most of the game.  ross has always struggled to shed blockers and make plays whenever hes not diagnosing from 5-7 yards away and darting to the ball.  its not like jenkins-stone was playing all conference level but he was ok and seemed to have decent feel for playing zone read, acting as the force, etc - and he wasnt injured, he at least played some last night so im not sure why they did that.  morgan and bolden prob played some their worst ball in m uniforms but ross looked truly clueless on the edge.  he was slow to react at times and at other times bailed on his responsibilities - at least 3-4 big runs by the QB were directly on ross for collapsing on the dive back with no one scraping behind him.

hopefully we dont see that experiment again bc it did not work.  tackling was all around poor last night.  the DL played great much of the game and other than some missed opportunties and the blown double move the CBs actually played ok - but safeties and LBs have certainly looked better

Agree that playing them in press is probably the best idea. Maybe I'm wrong, but Minn was doing a lot of bunch/stack sets probably purposefully so the DBs can't press. Good strategy on their part. But it's not like Minn had great success. Leister had under 50% passing and the most of the yards came on playing 500 into good coverage and it working. That happens sometime.

I'm glad that all of you want to be coaches know so much that some Division I school is going to come knocking on your door to get you to run defenses. The fact of the matter is you guys don't know shit when you speak on here and it makes you seem ignorant

And all of you wonder why this board is becoming a laughing stock of "know-it-alls". I don't know everything about everything about defensive back technique, but I have to trust our coaches and leave it at that...which is more than I can say for you pathetic, never done jack shot, never happy, pathetic, spoiled bitches.

Clark got beat on a back shoulder fade that I'm not even sure Leidner was really trying to throw, but which worked perfectly. If an opposing team can execute that, I think you just tip your cap and line up for the next play. Stribling got toasted on a double move with a pump-fake, which MSU also used to good effect on us. I think those plays will need to be prioritized for the coaching staff--though usually the best way to stop double moves is to put the QB on his ass before the route develops.

I was suprised by how much run Clark got. I thought Stirbling already had the edge and then Clark gave up that MSU TD. Seemed like he got the bulk of the snaps in the first half.

the clark play was just dumb luck. He played that how he was supposed to. He actually got a INT vs maryland playing that same route. If the minny qb threw that ball the way its coached, its a pick. Strib just got beat, no excuse for that

I personally think Clark is developing into a very good corner. When he first got switched from safety I was skeptical, however, over these past few weeks he has shown the fluidity to play the position very well.

DBs need to be aware of the game situation.  On the last throw over Stribling, it seemed to me as if the one thing he had to make absolutely sure of was that the receiver did not get behind him.  Regardless of how many moves the receiver made, Stribling - because of the game situation - had to be sure to keep the receiver in front of him, and he failed to do that.  That can be taught.

The pass D is very overrated. Of the 8 teams we have played, 5 of them possessed QB's that were either inexperienced, injured, on a bad team or backups (BYU(inexperienced backup), Oregon St(injured starter, inexperienced backup) , UNLV(injured starter), NW(Inexperienced starter), and Maryland (Below avg QB on Terrible team)). The other 3 QB's have really hurt Michigan badly. Travis Wilson for Utah didn't have huge #'s, but he was big in the clutch and got the big play when he needed it. Connor Cook shredded the defense for nearly 400 yards. Last night, Mitch Leidner(sp?) Threw the rock well and beat us with his legs more often than not. I think it's safe to say that PSU, IU, and OSU are all licking their chops.

If Dymonte and Peppers hold onto those INTs last night, it's a different game and we'd all be talking about how awesome our secondary is. But, the fact is they didn't hold onto those balls. I don't think they are overrated, but until they actually start making those plays the criticism is fair.

Mitch had some great throws into perfect coverage and got away with 3 passes that should of been picked clean, one of those the Peppers would be pick 6. The defense is fine, Clark and Stribling are fine. Stacked formations are difficult to defend, especially when the ball is threading the needle on a lot of throws. It's Sunday watch the NFL. Wait for the advanced stats and UFR to come out. Hot takes much?!?!

The eye in the sky doesn't lie. Wait for UFR, Michigan's DBs will be vindicated. Coverage was largely very good, in some instances absolutely perfect, but the ball was thrown well enough (or accidentally) to a spot that led to a catch. Then we tip a ball that falls to their receiver. Then we drop two interceptions that hit us in he hands. Then their WR makes a catch he has never made before and won't ever make again. Those things suck and made our DBs look bad, but they were in the right position more often than most college DBs are.

You are correct IMO, but how on earth does Stribling let a receiver get behind him with 20 seconds left in the game?  Safety got there late also, but couldn't see what other responsibility he might have had.

It really should gave cost us the game, just fortunate the receiver's knee went down as he was making the catch.
