strength coach question

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on
Many call the strength coach the biggest hire that the head coach makes. While it is easy to see who the best options are for the other assistants the strength coach is a little harder in this aspect. My question is who are the best strength coaches in the ncaa currently and which of them would fit a Harbaugh team well.

I strongly disagree with whoever says that a S/C coach is the biggest hire a head coach makes. If that were the case, they wouldn't be lowest paid coach on almost every staff

I'm with you. A great one is absolutely an essential part. In the 80's, Mike Gittleson was legendary. Recruits would return from a visit and talk about him like the recent ones did about Barwis. It's a huge decision. But there are a lot of good ones out there. Harbaugh will find one that meets their needs

I remember going to a UM football camp in '89, I think. I was in a session with Gittleson. He was awesome. During a 90 something day with 100% humidity: "do you boys think it's hot? 'Yes coach!', it's not nearly as hot as my third tour in Vietnam..."

Then later he took two kids from rival HS's, and had them face each other while holding weights out to see who would last longest. "See boys! A little motivation can make you move beyond yourself..."

At the time IIRC all the resistance was Nautilus based stuff, and thy put a ton of emphasis on negative reps.

Haha! That's awesome. I remember Gittleson very clearly as well when I camped there in '91. He made us hold out our arms at shoulder height for 20 minutes while he quoted from the camp brochure and made us repeat after him: "This is NOT A conditioning camp!"

How does a school's facilities also play into a potential S&C hire?

In fact, what are Michigan's weight room facilities? Are they machine based, or Olympic weight based?

A source confirms they will only come as a pair. Want new weight room and two tanks.

Supposedly made a statement to the effect of " we would tank them after we beat the puny armed Buckeyes".

I don't understand why we can't get Roddy Piper on the horn.

1. He only knows how to chew bubblegum and kick ass.

2. Dude is jacked.

3. Won't back down from a fight now matter how long it will take.

4. Mullet.

I've never heard "we have a bad S&C coach" used an excuse for a bad season or even one lost game. Fine, I guess we'll have to settle for the 2nd, 3rd or (gasp) even 4th best S&C coach in the country.

I tend to remember talk about our S&C being a huge problem for our 4th quarter ailes back in 2006(?). Mainly Appalachian state and Oregon players saying how gast we were
