Strength and Conditioning a factor?

Submitted by gord on

Has Wellman been trying to push some bullshit bro science for the last 4 years that Hoke has bought in to or is this team stronger and faster?

good. I remember we use to explode on other teams and they could not compete with our strength. Our line controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. I have not seen that in a long time. S&C doesn't get talked about enough especially for how small our secondary players are. That is where I see the neglect in S&C. Our secondary needs to be bigger there is no reason for Countess and Taylor not being close to 200 lbs. They are 15 lbs too small to be effecient tacklers on good size RBs (205 lbs and higher). If you need proof look at Terr Richardson. He has been in the program for 3 years and he isn't over 170lbs that is unacceptable.

the Dline (quite slow) and Oline (lack power). Perhaps the recruits lack the explosiveness to maximize performance with strength training. Regardless, attitude and intensity throughout the program probably influence development more than the specific S&C program.

I have been quite frustrated by the defenses inability to close off the edges or get to a scrambling QB.  We seem really slow.  I know our run defense has been great, but we just seem off when it comes to chasing someone down in the backfield.

We could never guard fast QBs well. I think we need to start converting safties and grow them into Linebackers or just recruit fast linebackers. I feel that our backs run in the 4.7 and 4.8's so it is just not possible to catch fast backs. It also doesn't help that our ends don't contain the QB.

It's not one thing. It's a combination of everything. This is a systematic failure in all phases. Maybe players should be gaining weight, but on the whole we've seen a lot of players transform their bodies. Special teams is giving up tons of return yards, the O can get yards at times but always seems to get that one negative play to kill a drive, and the D is actually pretty good but some of the secondary players make consistent mistakes. I've been a Hoke backer for a while and preached patience, but this game today was the last straw. We got the ball down 13 points with over 7 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter...we proceeded to barely cross mid field and give Utah the ball back with 1:30 left. He has to go. Give Either Harbaugh whatever they want. Just get one of them here, preferably Jimmy, but John would be great too.

I feel this is a big factor. Why is it our oline is always getting dominated against real competition? They never seem explosive or powerful. We seems to get blown up by bigger, faster, stronger teams. And it happens very single game lately.

He is a grown ass man and has put on 60+lbs since he arrived. We have big strong dudes all over the place, the problem is the you-know-whos who are attempting to teach them to football.  It aint working

Been talking about S&C for a while.  We just got pushed around and dominated physically all game long by an average PAC10 team.  Yeah, there's a big probloem.

I believe it is a factor. Is there a way to get an idea of what Wellman is focusing on? You look at SEC teams, Wisconsin, etc...and their offensive lines are humongous and powerful. We have guys that should be 310+ and powerful but are maxing at like 295 with little power. I'm looking at you Mags, Miller, Bosch, Bars, Samuelson.

Then again, it could be because those guys are fairly young, with the exception of Miller, and haven't had the chance to make big gains yet. I know Miller has put on almost 40 lbs since getting to school.

Maybe Wellman is a MAC level S&C coach?  It wasn't that long ago that he was there.  He kind of seems like a bro.  Maybe the team needs a nerd.  This team doesn't look bigger, stronger, and faster than it did 4 years ago even if a couple guys look better with their shirts off on instagram.
